Swellow being so uncommon is why I personally saw Pelipper as the regional Hoenn bird. I feel like it just makes more sense too with how water-based the region is (rather infamously) and how Pelipper has actually been useful in the meta. So if Swellow is actually the "Regional Hoenn Bird" I just call shenanigans honestly.

I count the Wingull line as a regional bird in my headcanon. I just like the concept that Hoenn is a region of doubles: introduction of double battles, two evil teams, two pseudo-legendaries, two Pikachu clones, and lots of "paired" Pokémon (Lunatone/Solrock, Zangoose/Seviper). Thus, two regional birds as well. :D

  • @qwertykins76

The notion that Noctowl drops the "time" theme entirely isn't really true. Noctowl's head adornments are like a horned owl, but they also look exactly like the tops of old grandfather clocks, with 2 pediments and especially the finial (the prong in the middle) giving this away. These are SUPER common decorations on really old grandfather clocks. For that matter I'm pretty sure Noctowl is supposed to look like a literal grandfather---it's old and wise, he's supposed to have "Father Time" vibes. And I think the reason Noctowl turns its head upside-down rather than backwards is because this mimics the direction clock hands turn in.

I’d argue with new changing definitions of what a regional bird is that Wingull and Pelipper are in fact the regional birds of Hoenn. They’re avaible before Tailow is and the only reason they weren’t counted as one in the past was due to the water/flying typing as opposed to normal/flying. However the Talonflame, Corviknight and Kilowattrel lines have proven that is no longer the case and therefore Wingull and Pelipper are the regional birds of Hoenn.

I think both are regional birds: they both had BSTs of 430 on release; both evolve via level up in the low 20s; gen 3 already has 2 pseudos so having 2 regional birds isn't out of the question; they represent the land vs water theme.
Also, gen 3 was a generation of pairs in general: the introduction of double battles, 2 pseudos legendaries, close Pokemon pairs like Lunatone/ solrock, seviper/zangoose, plusle and minun (also the only gen to have 2 pika-clones, unless you count mimikyu), Volbeat and illumise.

I think a decent definition of regional bird would be:
The first multi-stage evolutionary line (not counting starters) of bird pokemon in the regional pokedex. Bird pokemon is just defined as a pokemon that visually resembles a bird, usually flying type but not by requirement.
    Pidgey is before Spearow
    Hoothoot is before Natu
    Taillow is before Wingull
Starly is the only Sinnoh bird pokemon with more than one stage (Honchkrow is an added stage of a prior pokemon, and even then Starly is before Honchkrow in the pokedex)
    Pidove is before Rufflet
    Fletchling is before Spritzee
Pikipek is the only Alolan bird pokemon with more than one stage
Rookidee is the only Galarian bird pokemon with more than one stage
Wattrel is after Squawkabilly, but Squawkabillly only has one stage. Wattrel is before Flittle.
This definition accounts for all the bird pokemon in this video, and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to hold true

I had these two cool ideas for how they could implement the regional bird trope in future games.
    * Do a switcharound and have the regional bird act more like the regional mammal (Ratatta and Patrat for example) like a Turkey pokemon. Meanwhile we get a three stage flying mammal line, like a new three stage bat line or a flying squirrel line.
    * Give regular Farfetch’d an evolution and pre-evolution to act as a regional bird of sorts.
The latter idea is part of a greater idea I had for a Pokemon game where similar to Black and White. Old Pokemon are unavailable until post game except there are old Pokemon available due to them getting an evolution, pre-evolution, regional form, etc.

I make a Fakemon 'early' starter set long similar lines. The bug, the rodent, and the bird were all two stage Pokémon, but the second stage was sort of 'bad' (like Patrat and Watchhog bad). However, they all had baby forms that had a unique signature move. If the middle stage evolved with the signature move, it would go into a better branch evolution.

Squawkabilly would fit the bill extremely well due to being shown early in the game and being early in the game, but it's major setback is not evolving like a Chatot situation and possibly being the most underwhelming Pokemon of Gen 9.

I really like how this video isn’t just a compilation with no extra edits to make it less jarring. Most videos of this sort (that I’ve seen anyway) are just the original videos slapped together with the intros/outros cut out as needed. But I appreciate the extra effort you put in to make the transitions feel like part of the video instead of just a cut. I’ve already seen most of the original videos on the regional birds, I put this on as background noise to draw to, but I did notice (and, again, very much appreciate) how you added interest to this video to make it more than a simple compilation. It adds more than one would think, just having a little segway between each segment to break it up and tie it all together. :)

The definition I've seen a lot of commentators use (but apparently none of the poll replies which Lockstin read) is that the regional bird is the first flying-type bird pokémon in the gen's pokédex that can evolve (and isn't also a starter, so rowlett doesn't count because it is a starter). This definition disqualifies wingull due to its being listed after taillow in the pokédex, despite its appearing in the wild earlier (along with Ash's never catching one before he stopped catching regional birds altogether, I guess), and disqualifies squawkabilly due to its not being able to evolve.

  • @dh7367
    @dh7367 8 месяцев назад +2

I love how everyone doesn't accept Wingull and Pelipper as regional birds, literally can be caught 1 route before Taillow in its debut gen, and appearing in other regions like Taillow years later. Wingull and Pelipper are regional birds of Hoenn alongside the Taillow line.

    • @shyguyrocks1
      @shyguyrocks1 8 месяцев назад +2

It should be counted. Not only did Hoenn have an unsaid theme of duality or doubles as another comment pointed out, but it's also heavily water-based and Pelipper just fits the region so much better. If I wanted to represent Hoenn as a region with a bird Pokemon it would be Pelipper.

They are such iconic inclusions to the world that, despite being just...you know, birds, still manage to hold a special place within the Pokemon universe and fanbase. I myself find it incredibly difficult to not include at least one bird in a playthrough of any Pokemon game, I like them that much.

Regional bird/bug/animal - The first Flying-type/Bug-type/Normal-type [these can be swapped for bird/bug/non-bird and non-bug animal that is also at least part-Normal-type] Pokemon encountered in the regional PokeDex that evolves.*
*If there are multiple next to each other on the PokeDex, they are both the regional bird/bug/animal.
*If the first Flying-type is also a Bug-type, then it becomes the regional bug, not the regional bird.
*If the first Normal-type is also a Flying-type, then it becomes the regional bird, not the regional animal.
*If the first Bug-type is also a Normal-type, then it becomes the regional bug, not the regional animal.

(wattrell is not there because they showed it in the list of new pokemon when they introduce all the pokemon in paldea. and also wingull/natu/spearow are not in that frame/group.) and also yes their total base stats total are close to each other, it's just like how we call a line of pokemon with 600 total base stats as "pseudo legendary".

It's pretty much confirmation on the swellow vs. wingull competion for regional bird. The pokemon company gave an answer, even if they didn't slap the words "regional bird" on there, they pretty much solidified most ideas on what a regional bird is
      1. Evolves
      2. Non starter
      3. Bird
      4. First dex wise

    1. I am surprised that he didn't mention the easy connection of the Talonflame line. Fletchling and Fletchinder also come from Kindling, the baby fuel needed to start a fire from scratch, and Tinder, the necessary spark needed to keep the fire going. Combine those two and you have a flame!
    2. Another detail about the Kilowattrel line is that its theming of piracy even goes into it mechanically. It's Electric/Flying, and is therefore supereffective against every other regional bird, and can bully them into giving them whatever they want.

    My definition is
1: A Pokémon that contains at least 1 evolution.
2: Must be flying type for at least one of its forms and still be a bird (such as if we got a Pokémon that was say Water/Flying then in second stage became Water/Grass or electric)
3: Must be the first line of new Pokemon for its introduction region that meets this criteria in its regional dex. (I.E. Wingul can be found first but tallow is still listed first in the honenn regional dex)

    • @shyguyrocks1
