@@Anayansi958 The statement is partially incorrect. While the region now known as Panama was inhabited by indigenous peoples long before Spanish arrival, Panama as a political entity did not exist before Spanish colonization. It was part of the Spanish Empire until 1821, when it gained independence from Spain and voluntarily joined Gran Colombia. Panama did not become fully independent as its own nation until 1903, when it separated from Colombia.

@ Panamá may not have existed as a Western political entity, but its name and territory with the mission of being a transit isthmus and melting pot did exist since pre Colonial times. Panama could have become independent in 1902 if the US wouldn’t have helped Colombia at the time.

    • @DonKeecocked
      @DonKeecocked 17 дней назад

@@Anayansi958 While it's true that Panama's geographic role as a transit isthmus and cultural crossroads existed long before European colonization, the formation of Panama as a modern, independent nation was heavily influenced by U.S. intervention. If the U.S. had never pursued the Panama Canal, the likelihood of Panama becoming an independent nation in the early 20th century would have been very low. At the time, Panama was a remote province of Colombia with limited resources and little political leverage to successfully push for independence on its own. Previous independence attempts had failed due to a lack of external support and Colombia's military control.
The U.S. had a direct and strategic interest in separating Panama from Colombia to build and control the canal. Without that motivation, there would have been no U.S. naval blockade to stop Colombian forces, no financial or political backing for revolutionaries, and no international pressure on Colombia to let Panama go.
Panama might have eventually gained independence, but it likely would have taken much longer and under very different circumstances-possibly as part of broader regional movements or internal Colombian political shifts. The decisive and swift independence Panama achieved in 1903 was almost entirely due to U.S. intervention.

I am Panamanian. In Panama they instill in us that our most important natural resource is simply our geographical position. Other countries have minerals or oil. Panama has an unmatched, enviable and inalienable position. Destiny put us here and we are the custodians of this point. We are the nation of the isthmus.
For this reason, there is no proposal that any power, today or tomorrow, can offer so that we Panamanians, voluntarily and as a national group, can give them control of the canal. Where the powers have nuclear weapons, we are simply here. The biggest weakness is that a ship sunk in the narrowest part (the culebra cut) ruins the entire operation. Remember what happened to the Suez Canal? Well like that - indefinitely. Making it obsolete is our weapon.
As for the security of the canal, everyone passes through the canal. It is better that it stays in Panamanian hands because we are destined for neutrality. What the "professor" said is bogus. Our neutrality treaty force us to allow everyone to pass through, even Russian warships. If the US took over, it would be an easy target for its enemies since the US is the #1 user. It is known that Osama Bin Laden considered attacking the Panama Canal to hurt the United States, but decided to focus on the twin towers of NYC, the Pentagon, and the White House. However, if the Panama Canal remains with Panama as a neutral country, there would be an understanding (which, although it could be broken) would be seen as an attack on a third nation and not a legitimate objective, thereby allowing the transit of ships, even when their countries could be at war with each other.
In summary, the math ain't mathing for the US to get back on track in any way. The Panama Canal belongs to Panama or there is no canal.
Also, has anyone stopped to think why Jimmy Carter and 68 US Senators (only needed 66) voted in favor of the treaty? Think about it. Learn more. It has a lot to do with what I just described here.

The Panama Canal was built in 1914, which makes it a relic. In fact, it is an old structure that has become too small for the size of the ships that are built today. If Trump wants to get his Canal back, he would have to reclaim that old canal built in 1914, not the third set of locks built with Panamanian taxes in 2016. Panamanians expanded the canal to allow larger ships to pass, and in fact most of the traffic goes through that new structure.
The current Panama Canal is not the same as in 1914. Most of the human lives lost in the construction of the canal were not Americans, but West Indians that the Americans themselves brought to do the hard work for them. Most of the workers were black, from countries like Martinique, Jamaica, Trinidad...

Greetings from Panamá the canal has a neutrality treaty ratified by many countries but not China. The Balboa port on the Pacific and the Cristobal port in Caribean side where operated by The Panamá canal company and when the canal was given to Panamá it was operated by The A.P.N. Panamá port authority , the ports where out dated with no container handling facilities there fore these two ports that are strategically located had to be modernized to handle containerized cargo and Panamá didn't have the money so the ports where put up for bid. Sealand (u.s. ) came in second and Hutchington wapoa from HongKong won the bid. Hutchinson was a Brittish company until the turn over of HongKong to China. Concerning the Panamá canal rates all ships pay the same and these rates are agreed between the users and the canal authority not unilaterally. If the u.s. wanted a better rate they had the opportunity to negotiate this in the orijinal treaty that gave the canal to Panamá as it was negotiated to give u.s. navy ships preferential transits. Finally Panamá has operated the canal very well and even made it bigger with the new locks for bigger ships. Let's talk the truth the average Panamanian is very proud of the canal and the way we have operated it for the past 25 years so I would say the only way the u.s. Will get it back would be a military invasion and thats a terrible move specially by all the countries that cosigned Panama's neutrality treaty.

There is contradiction on the professors statement. First, Panama as a country is neutral. It doesn't even have military and the US is responsible for its protection. Second, the Panama canal, as an entity, is neutral. Third, China doesn't run (administer) the Panama canal. Forth, the price to go across the Panama Canal are state in the US.
I read about the Panama Canal history and it was never negotiated by the Panamanian government but the Great Colombia as Panama was a Federal state so, the project to build the Panama Canal was sign by the great Colombia with the Universal Company of the Maritime Canal of Suez, formed by Ferdinand de Lesseps in 1858. After the failure to build the Canal, his chief engineer Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla, went to USA and sold the project to Teddy Roosevelt. He recognized the need of a mega project and he was interest even before the French got the project.
Wrapping up till here, the great Colombia gave the mega project to de Lesseps company and after the failure de Lesseps send Bunau-Varilla to sell the project to the US, and the US pay 10M, later splitted between de Lesseps company and by this time Colombia after the US collaborate with Panama separation from the great Colombia. You may have noticed by now that Panama, didn't get any money for the mega project.
So, it is a mega project and a mega project has a ROI time, the US paid the Panamanian government a remanent after the OPEX. And after a profit time before it's deliver to the owner. Nevertheless, there was a turning point where the US clearly saw an opportunity to keep the Panama Canal under perpetuity, and decided to take land that was never included on the original contract to be used by the South Command Network. That's why Panamanians claim that no Panamanian ever signed for the mega project or any agreement to install military bases in Panamanian soil that divided their capital city in two territories.
Finally, the Panamanian government present this case at the UN, and got major support which concluded with the US senate returning the mega project to Panama.

You both seem to be unaware of how technology affects life. You somehow think the technology that allowed the Canal to be expanded is secret? Or forgotten? Or not even improved?
Initially, France tried from 1881, but gave up in 1890. The US took over in 1904 and finished in 1914. Panama later began expansion in September of 2007 and completed in June 2016 (that's more than 4 years, by the way - your country's math sucks). So, with people digging dirt, the USA created the Panama canal in 10 years and with Panamanian know-how, they expanded the locks in 9 years. 🤔Hmm, yeah, they probably could have used the US to help them along. And it's not like there were 20,000 TEU ships back in 1914, which were the size of ships when the Panamanians expanded. (Meaning, even when completed, there were ships that were too large for the Panama Canal.)

You failed to mention that there is a neutrality agreement with Panama. The US is also 70-75% percent of the traffic through the canal so it seems unlikely that Panama would stop US traffic and lose all that revenue.
As far as Gatun Lake, yes, there is a potential issue with drought causing a reduction in water. This happened this past year and Panama had to make some reductions in traffic, however, I fail to see how trump taking over the canal would avoid this happening as it has nothing to do with who manages the canal.
You also failed to mention that Panamanian independence was orchestrated by Roosevelt and french financier Bunau-Varilla in order to get control of the canal area that France had already attempted to turn into the canal.
Sounds more like your trying to whitewash potential US aggression towards a sovereign nation in violation of a treaty.
Oh BTW, the Chinese have not taken over control of the canal.
You also might want to look into trump's failed hotel here in Panama. This is probably the reason he is fixated on this.

There may be some alternate canals across Central America (Tehuantepec isthmus) in future, but the present "Panama" canal is the best, because it is the best location to dig a canal (36 mile wide isthmus) & proved its worth by remaining the only canal here. Much investment has been sunk here, needing only marginal additional investment to overcome its present predicament.
The problem: the very concept of lifting each ship 85 feet AMSL, by means of a system of locks - over three levels. Enormous water is needed (50 million gallons) whenever a gate is opened. Seasonal heavy rains impounded by Gatun & the much smaller Miraflores lakes, supply water. With climatic changes the water needed wasn't forthcoming & the mid-canal dried up. The task ahead, after studying the Gatun lake (9m or 30 feet deep?) hydrography, is to eliminate the locks-system & dig-up the canal bottom, to sea level.
Opportunity: The present canal works can be imagined as partly-built canal, needing the work to be completed. The present canal is the asset (investment) to start work. All the the expenditure can be recovered shortly, in future.
Water level in the canal at 85 feet (26m) AMSL implies deepening, for sea water entry. Further, the canal bottom shall have to be dug up, to 14m - AMSL for the needed draft for big ships. It implies, maximum digging of 40 m (131 feet) at places, but mostly 15 m. It is doable with the present-day equipment & machinery. Work contracts can be farmed out to Asian (Korean, Chinese & Indian) firms.
