Hi, I am a 75 year old ex ships joiner and later a guitar maker, I too have really enjoyed Leo's fantastic project. I was drawn to your video because I also love to play a fiddle ( though I have yet to make my own) Rally love the idea of a dedicated instrument on the boat especially if there is a player among the project crew. Love your work, keep it up! Andrew Morgan Northumberland England
Keep up the great work! Make the videos you want to make. You don't owe an explanation to anyone. You've got the right attitude. It's about Leo and the Tally Ho... nothing more.
What REALLY comes through in your videos is your passion for teaching. You have some lucky students, I have been subjected to brilliant professors that couldn't explain a stop light. Skill, knowledge, passion and pedagogy all in one educator is rare and should be appreciated.
You are a master craftsman in your own right . 33+ years millwrighting and I watch your precision and love of tools , I can only say much honor and respect. God bless you always
Well, Leo's done it again! You are the fourth RUclipsr I'm now following after finding his channel several months ago. And I really admirer your careful use of descriptors: artist, luthier, and, especially, teacher. I worked in public schools for more than 30 years, not as a teacher, but in school-age childcare. I feel proud of what I did, but know that good teachers do have something special.
Generous in nature and in giving, Thank you for not being influenced by the negativity you find in such an exposed forum. Keep up the great work. A new subscriber
Cool. At least your answers speak of authenticity rather than celebrity .. as your work does too. Completely enjoyed the 'Tally Ho violin' videos so far and started watching more of your videos, thanks!!
Just want to say thank you for this series of videos making the Tally Ho fiddle. My favorite parts of the build was the carving of the top and back. I’ve never seen that done but you made it look easy.
Your talent is obvious and it has been my pleasure to watch your videos. Glad I found your channel and I look foward to new content in the months to come.
You don't call yourself a Luthier? Hell, I'll call you a Luthier! The talent you display and the instruments you have created show your talent. Don't let the stupid questions get in the way of of a great teaching experience for us! watching your channel is a treat!
good on you for gifting an amazing hand made instrument and not wanting to be too showy and come off like you are trying to gain something. Both projects you can enjoy because of your explanations and craftmanship
Mate, it’s your show. Play what you want to play. All music is good music to somebody. Detractors can vote with their feet or volume switch, that’s what they’re for😎
Wow, I'm impressed, i like the sound, I'm impressed, I didn't know that using goatskin would give you this effect. Have a great day and thk's for the songs you've played.
I love watching Sampson Boat Company build his boat. I started watching your channel mainly because you are working with Leo. The reason i subscribed to your channel is because I love the music. You are very talented, I am hooked.
Thank you for taking the time to document making the Fiddle, I really enjoyed the video series and subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to what ever you build, cheers.
Love this project. RUclips recommended it a few times and when I clicked, I had to watch it all. Building my own violin is definitely a bucket list item. One day I'd love to play this violin on tally ho
Like you I've been a Tally Ho Fan and a fan of Leo and the many crew members over the years. I've picked up some interesting side videos of various people doing side projects for Tally Ho but this fiddle project stands out for me. As a carpenter and woodworking hobiest, I appreciate working with tools and handwork. Yours has been exceptionally pleasurable to watch and I'll definitely be coming back as often as I see a notice. The music and your picking are fine, let to each be their own. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Seriously, isn't what we contribute more important than what we get back? My words pale by comparison. I noticed your tea kettle banjo in your Q&A video and was going to ask, then saw it in the video queue. You would make a great neighbor but then I'd become a pest. Keep enjoying what you do and I will too.@@JDanielGraham
New subscriber… absolute enjoy your talents and dedication to education. I’m a retired educator myself. One it’s in your blood it’ll always be there. Very honorable.
I love your work and music too...and able to adjust the volume on my computer 'if' I find it too loud, hasn't bothered me so far though. Some keyboard warriors are OTT with comments, usually about something they have little knowledge of, I see it quite often in my own hobby interest groups and personally would prefer the 'if you can't say anything nice/polite/etc, then don't say anything at all' option. Personally I have an interest in violin and banjo, even though I can't play either, but really enjoyed seeing how much work goes into making these instruments, so a BIG thank you for your explanation as I've learned something from watching you!
I've played a cello for some 40 years (some say I seem to have "meant well"). I have played a cello made by someone in Eastern Europe during the 1890's using different "schools of influences." Not necessarily a formally "trained luthier." Most who hear it say very positive things about how it sounds. Please, please, please, let us hear someone play it before you ship it. Love your work, and Tally Ho connections. YOUR Banjo is THE BOMB! Thank you!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Cello is so cool! and it sounds like you have a great one. I do have a friend play it at the end for a sound sample. Im glad you like the banjo playing!
Thanks so much! it is one of my favorites to play. I made it for an online banjo building class I offer and I planned to sell it but I can't let it go. ruclips.net/video/Q_tA09dRyig/видео.html
You make stringed instruments, and that fits the definition of a luthier. Whether you do it for money or just pleasure, you still practice the craft. Same with teaching. Not every instructor or teacher is certified, but that doesn't mean they don't teach. Leo is a boat builder and identifies as such. Doesn't matter if he has built a dozen boats or just one. I do not think anyone watching Leo would question whether he is a boat builder.
I like that deeper sound - Thanks for sharing. Daniel I like what you do, just being you. You are not the same as other channels and that is interesting and entertaining. I also like channels like Rosa string works, but variety is the spice of life. Best wishes to you and yours and some more of that banjo would be nice as well!!
Thats great! I was the same way when I heard his songs. I thought...now that is interesting, never would have picked that but I liked listening to the punch of a lot of the songs while working in the studio.
Really enjoying your series. Your ethics, attention to detail and video style compliments the Tally Ho project beautifully. I'm sure you'll gain many fans from that community. Thanks
Greetings Mr Graham from Maysville. I am enjoying seeing your construction of this fiddle, it is a very interesting process. And you have a good artistic taste. That banjo on the wall with the image of the lady in the boat especially catches my eye, very pretty banjo.
My apologies but I have another question. How do you think the violin will cope with a life of constantly being near water and with all that moist sea air? The music is great by the way.
Great question! I think it will do just fine. I made sure it wasn't too dry to damage itself in its new home. It will adjust ok to sea life and the moisture.
I just found your channel. I am not a proper judge but I wonder about these people who find it necessary to say you are not a luthier. Are they craftsmen themselves? You seem to do very fine work and take pleasure in it and that comes across in the videos. That is what I am here for!
As for negative comments from fans of Tally Ho, there is a contingent of cranky old men, who don't sail anymore, who sit on their chairs and can't stand that the world has moved on from their precious opinions. Ignore them.
I think most of the Tally Ho fans are really just average people who are amazed at the complexity and creativity of clasic boat construction. A great many artists and crafts people of all types have been voluntiers on the project. There are always trolls in public forums and they come in many types.
I've watched all the episodes from the tally ho project wonderful skills shown. I have watched your tally ho fiddle build very interesting and your skills are incredible. I had to look up what a luthier was ! I find it incredible that these keyboard warriors have nothing better to do than criticise. Mind you looking at it positively i have learnt a new word . Keep up the good Dave Uk
Loved this video…..loved your first video about this instrument and your friends music specifically. Loved that you have time to share ! Have a great day💖💖💖👋🇦🇺
I like the banjo and your playing. That banjo has a really warm sound. Interesting. Mellow in the treble and full in the bass. And the fact that it's fretless makes it sound all the more organic. It works really well as a solo instrument. What are the strings made of? I sense not metal. It's the opposite of a typical clangy banjo sound (which has it's place, of course, but this is just different).
They are nylon strings. I really like the sound of a gourd banjo. Clangy banjo has its place like you said but it's not something I have been ever really drawn to personally.
Great stuff! Every time I watch your videos I’m drawn to that bottle cap body banjo. Would love to hear the story on that and even see the hand carving and shaping of that being made.
I think Andrew Montana's music is great! Never heard you say you're a luthier. I like your straightforward style! Can't wait to see the finished product.
He is a super nice guy! Yeah I never said I was and a chunk of people were made that I come off as one... I didnt understand so I thought i would just clarify.

I want to thank you for answering the questions. I think you are doing a great job on the build videos and I am looking forward to the next ones. As to the banjo, what a wonderful and unique sound. Far deeper and more mellow than your typical banjo. Also, fretless? That's pretty cool. Plus, I love the headstock on that one as well as the overall appearance. Some very nice work went into that instrument!

I would not have found your channel without the link to Tally Ho. However, I as so glad I did!!! You are an inspiration, an artist, a giver of your time and expertise for a project that intrigues us all "Tally Ho". I enjoy your positivity and reassuring perspective and attitude. I am now a subscriber and look forward to reviewing your previous videos.
Cheers to you my friends. Dont let a bunch of whiners ruin your fun. I love what you are doing for Tally Ho and Leo. I know he was a musician but he has never told us what instruments he playes. I was surprised that he selected a violin. I just love seeing Craftsmen working at there craft. 👏👏👏
I have enjoyed your videos immensely. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I'm about 25 miles sw of etown and would love to make some of those instruments, but I could not afford to drive over to Morehead very often. Hope you have a great day.

Hi. I came here from the Tally-Ho project. Loving this violin series. I too originally thought the front & back of a violin was bent until I discovered otherwise when I had the privilege of visiting a violin workshop in Cremona, Italy (the city where Stradivarius lived!) I do have one question… Is the solid, thick timber inside the violin body just a ‘former’ that comes out before the top & bottom are affixed or does it become a permanent structure that adds the strength to the body?
It all comes out. The violin is super light and open and needs to be. I wish i could leave it in! that would be so much easier haha. But it comes out soon.
Hello Daniel I’m enjoying watching the violin progress. It’s a great idea to use some of Tally ho’s timber in the construction. I’m an amateur violin maker and wished I had thought of the idea to recycle some of tally ho into a violin. I’m sure Leo will produce a video of the violin being played. Also getting a great deal of pleasure watching your other videos.
Your background proves that you are in fact, a Luthier. You've just exposed people's insecurities and immaturity. You make stringed instruments. That's a Luthier. Have a great day and thanks for sharing.

You are an inspiration, an artist, a giver of your time and expertise for a project that intrigues us all "Tally Ho". I enjoy your positivity and reassuring perspective and attitude. I am now a subscriber and look forward to reviewing your previous videos.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that.
Thanks for that. It has been a fun one to make for sure. I thought he might take a banjo. But the fiddle has been a good one.
I have enjoyed your videos immensely. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I'm about 25 miles sw of etown and would love to make some of those instruments, but I could not afford to drive over to Morehead very often. Hope you have a great day.
Im In georgetown so closer than morehead. Im about 1.5hrs from you. I also teach on demand video classes you can do at your own pace. jdgraham.net/video-courses/
Love the videos, love the music, love the instruments
Thanks for that!
Hi. I came here from the Tally-Ho project. Loving this violin series. I too originally thought the front & back of a violin was bent until I discovered otherwise when I had the privilege of visiting a violin workshop in Cremona, Italy (the city where Stradivarius lived!)
I do have one question… Is the solid, thick timber inside the violin body just a ‘former’ that comes out before the top & bottom are affixed or does it become a permanent structure that adds the strength to the body?
It all comes out. The violin is super light and open and needs to be. I wish i could leave it in! that would be so much easier haha. But it comes out soon.
Hello Daniel I’m enjoying watching the violin progress. It’s a great idea to use some of Tally ho’s timber in the construction. I’m an amateur violin maker and wished I had thought of the idea to recycle some of tally ho into a violin. I’m sure Leo will produce a video of the violin being played. Also getting a great deal of pleasure watching your other videos.
Im glad you are watching them! Thanks so much!
Your background proves that you are in fact, a Luthier. You've just exposed people's insecurities and immaturity. You make stringed instruments. That's a Luthier. Have a great day and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for that! I appreciate it.
