  • Here we talk about Tag Heuer watches and if they are good. While I do appreciate some Tag Heuer models, there are some things about the brand that watch collectors should know before buying.
    Thanks for all the support!

Going to pass my aquaracer down to my son as his first real watch, just as it was my first real watch. I now have Grand Seiko, Omega and Tudor in my collection. I own the current gen Aquaracer and I have had no issues with it. It's a great piece. I can't speak to the quality of the Formula 1 and if it is lesser quality because I have never held or owned one. But it has been my experience that people follow the crowd. Most people that "hate on TAG" do so because they've been told to or listen to too much Archie Blowhard. But as usual the bottom line is...your wrists, your money. Buy what you like and to hell what everyone else thinks about it.

Seiko and Casio has the same mix of high end, mid range and entry level watches. Why do watch geeks always crucify Tag Heuer? 🤔

    • @assoverteakettle
      @assoverteakettle 3 года назад +10

Because the Rolex owners will look down upon them in watch forums. Watch snobbery is the only reason. No one can explain the macroeconomic phenomenon called the snob effect or snob appeal. It is a completely irrational behavior where people put higher values on luxury brand names.
Same thing with high end luxury cars, and designer clothing.
At the end of the day your Tag Heuer is still exotic to most people who are not into luxury watches. In fact, most average people who have to pay monthly bills and a mortgage consider spending $2000 on a watch as being frivolous. They see spending $15000+ on an obsolete technology (automatics) watch as obnoxious. They're not impressed by it unless you happen to make an 8 figure salary.

Current generation AquaRacer is a really good watch, especially the 41mm size. Rock solid build, 300m WR, great bi-colour lume, excellent supple bracelet, original design DNA, no daft HEV or faux rivets😂 A very underrated watch, the white dial especially is really nice.

My first nice watch was the Tag Heuer Link Calibre S in 2007. I didn't really know much about watches at the time, but Jason Bourne wore a link and Steve McQueen wore a Heuer in Le Mans, so I was sold. The Calibre S was their big release that year boasting a hybrid mechanical/quartz movement with 1/100th of a second chronometer. It was really cool that in the time mode, the chronometer dials functioned as the date. I wore that watch every day for 12 years and loved it. As I learned more about watches, I slowly turned into a watch snob wanting a mechanical movement/sweeping second hand, but I still wear it often and love it.

Another awesome video, thanks John. I am a huge motor racing fan and have loved Heuer since the 60s. I could not afford their earlier watches and was fortunate to pick up a TAG Heuer 2000 20 years ago at a very good price. It has has an ETA quartz and has served as my daily watch since the day I bought it. My TAG is still in immaculate condition and, literally, has travelled the world on my wrist. I am therefore quite partisan towards the watch, despite its poor reputation. I wish I had the the money to buy the limited Jack Heuer chronograph (Autavia re-issue), but this watch is far beyond the budget of a semi-retired teacher. I love, and value, your opinions very much; and always look forward to your videos.

  • @brianpalay
    @brianpalay 4 года назад +1

What you said about the difference between lower end and higher end TAGs is really interesting and I think totally on point. I recently bought an Aquaracer 500M Calibre 7, which is so rare I had to make a video of it for my channel because there were zero videos of that model on here. (Mine's still the only one.) I'm not even a watch channel, but there was just no representation of the model. Anyway I feel it is a pretty nice quality feeling watch. The clasp has solid hinge arms and push buttons, and I know some lower end models have stamped arms and stamped fold-over closures. And the movement, since it's not the regular Calibre 5 ETA/Sellita grab bag, is an ETA 2893-2 which is solid. That said, I know it does not equal something like a Seamaster Diver 300M in build or movement, but since I got it for about $800 off retail due to it being a new old stock model from a few years back, it was about $2000 less than a Seamaster, and I wasn't going to shop in that price range just yet. If I was spending $4000 to $6000 I'd probably be shopping Omega. But I wasn't going to, so I'm happy with TAG as another choice among brands like Oris, Longines, higher end Seiko, etc.

I'm glad I'm subscribed and really enjoyed your professional thoughts on this subject. You make great points about it so keep up the honest opinions.
So, my first "luxury" watch was from my girlfriend (now my wife) and it was the Caliber 16 Carrera automatic chrono. Love it and going on 9 years with it. Then I got more into the watch hobby and now I see the flaws in it: Terrible lume, "meh" bracelet, clunky feeling pushers, a tad large for my slender wrist. But that's because I'm more informed; had I not gotten into the hobby I'd still think very highly of it so their marketing team did a good job in that respect, LOL. You're right, some of the micro-brands just about kill it in bang-for-the-buck. Anyway, it's a keeper for me due to the emotional/sentimental aspect of it and it still makes me smile with the many memories I've had with it, including specifically wearing it on our wedding day. At the end of the day it's what it does for me that matters.

Second watch is been repaired as we speak and waiting for it, hopefully I'll get it back soon.

That said, your point about the lack of movement clarity bothers even me, definitely a more casual collector. Only because in what feels like the decade, the price they charge warrants much more investment in the movement (to your point). It’s because of this, even having always said The Carrera 38mm chronograph variations are hands down my favorite watch, I have the hardest time justifying buying one. Thanks John - good chat

I bought an F1 model back in 2008 (quartz) after several battery changes and no real service still works. Then recently just bought a Monaco calibre 11 for a casual/dress watch. Maybe the reason I like Tag was in the late 80’s early 90’s that’s what I saw in F1 races and also in car magazines. My love of cars came with Tag, LOL.

I've owned heaps of TAGHeuer's in my decade in this hobby. And I hold them in the same regard as all the Omega's, Rolex's, Breitling's, IWC's and everything else I've also owned. Very solid watches, with their own unique character. My old Link calibre 7 2892 based movement is one of my favourite watches ever.

Same, i own a couple IWC, TAGs, Omega, Grand Seiko, high end Citizen watches, and my favorite is still the blue dail caliber 1887, i even bought the blue dail IWC Ingeneuir because its cool to have a watch called the Engineer (its my profession) but mostly because when i saw it reminded me of the 1887 as its has similar looks, and i don't care what everyone says about it, it looks sporty, elegant and classy, oh, and i hate Rolexes, except the Sky Dweller, that is one heck of a watch

Every brand suffers from sales and mostly all established manufactures and respected brands have been thru ups and downs many times, many have exchanged hands numerous times in the past due to boom and bust, recessions and competition. Swatch group has many of my favorite watch companies and Richmont group is another. TagHeuer is heads and shoulders over many out there. TagHeuer fully in-house watches are the real deal but it will cost you, just look at the Carrera blue Dreamer and the skipper exchanging upwards 15-20K I've been trying to get one to but not easy.

I bought my T-H 4000 diving watch in January of 1998. Other than batteries every 4 or 5 years, it has been flawless. Never loses any time over the year, and still looks great to this day. Have never had the need for an official servicing either. I am a big fan of Tag Heuer watches.

My first real watch was a Tag Aquaracer caliber 5, proud moment, which became a gateway to a Baume & Mercier then wanted more and got my Omega Deville, then a Seamaster 120 which needed a Speedmaster to keep it company and then lead me to my Rolex. This beloved Tag had open the doors to my obsession to luxury watches which has sparked my wife and sons interest in there own watch collection-my son was 13 years old when he got his first Omega seamaster and cherishes it and my wife couldn't live without a Cartier tank-all because of my initial interest for an Aquaracer 6 years ago.

you nailed it with the movement issue. the problem with tag heuer (to me) is, you get the same quality for much less money (longines, tissot, some micro brands) or better quality for the same money. (breitling, wempe, other micro brands) they are charging much to much for their brand. i would say the best way to make TH respectable again is to give them cosc movements - all of them. that's the least they should do for the money they charge.

In my opinion it’s a superb purchase and a must buy.

    Hi John P
I’m somewhat new to the watch Hobby. 5 years now, 30 watches, and probably 2 hours a day watching watch you tubes by all the “Big” RUclips producers.
My General perception is while they all review watches from $500 to let’s say $70,000, they all lean to Rolex level watches. That said, they all are pretty cool with watches sub 4K.
But you, Good Sir, act like any watch that doesn’t measure up to Rolex level are “poor” low level.
In my collection, I have Three Automatic Tag Huer and Two Quartz Tag’s. I bought the all five years ago. Great style, fairly accurate, all reasonably priced. Three Oris, Three Hamiltons, Two BB58 Tudors.
All really good movements and Awesome to wear.
Sadly, sir, this video, to me, is the Highest Watch snobbery I’ve Ever seen in literally thousand of views in my five years.
I get the feeling that watches you Approve of are in the Rolex level. You probably only drive Mercedes and Live on Ocean Front homes with you’re Playboy model wife.
I consider my first five watches I bought, which were Tag Hauer probably as stylish and accurate as you’re high end watches. Thankfully, when I finally need to service them, it will only cost me $400 instead of youre $1,300 service.
I don’t mean to be rude good sir, but this video is the most snobbish and disrespectful to lower brands, sub $4,000.

My auto TAG 2000 that I bought in ‘04 was my first real watch. I admit I paid too much for it! I probably wouldn’t buy it again; there are so many other good options available. That said, it’s been great & I don’t hesitate to wear it anywhere. I’ve had it serviced once & it’s +5 sec/day.
Also, when I was looking to buy my first real watch, I also considered a Rolex Explorer. I recently looked at what an ‘04 explorer would bring now...dang.

Just purchased an old tag formula one chronograph ca1212-1. It's the white faced carbon dial one and it's mint considering it's a 99 model. It wears beautifully. It cost me £430 which is probably what it cost new almost, and I got it cheap compared to others I've seen. Tag heuer resale value is better than most , so they must be doing something right.

I have a Tag Heuer WE1122-R Professional and it looks as good as the day I bought it in 1997.
The only issue with it is the luminescence last 5 minutes due to its age.
It’s a great every day watch, light well made and nice looking.
The key to keeping any watch in tip top shape is having it serviced and water tested every two-three years.

I recently bought a Tag Aqua racer GMT after considering so many alternatives. I own 2 rolexes (sub & deepsea) and 2 Omega planet oceans, but none of these are GMTs. I needed a not-so-expensive travel watch that can give me at least 2 time zones while I am travelling in Europe this fall. After extensive search, I narrowed it down to 2 - Tudor and Tag. After much deliberation, I finally bought the Tag. Here are the things that swayed my decision towards Tag (compared to Tudor):
    1. Both watches are almost in the same price range.
    2. Tag has the "cyclops" so I can see the date very clearly (this is the problem with Omegas, Rolex sea dweller and Tudor)
    3. Tag has the quickset date function and, with the crown in the first position, you can also move the hour hand independently when you reach your destination.
    4. With the rotating bezel, you can also check the 3rd time zone quickly.
    5. Finally (this is my personal preference), I like 42 - 44 mm watches - Tudor (41 mm) is too small for my taste.
This is my first Tag and I love it. Buy the one that you like and don't go by all the nonsense on you tube.

TAG Heuers may be a great entry watch for a newbie but unless you’re buying a Monaco or Autavia (both now branded HEUER) why would you spend $7-10,000 on a watch brand the person next to you paid $700 for? - albeit a quartz model that carries the same name? At the higher end JLCs or Breguets represent so much genuine cred. And you’ll always appreciate the quality.

    • @MrRea112

Heuer 01 and Heuer Autavia owner. I love them. I plan on a Monaco next. Buy what you love. I think you are right regarding quality, the Carrera Heuer01 and Autavia are equal to Zenith and arguably better than Hublot. But you look at an Aquaracer, although a great watch, it's not as much bang for your buck.
They have a similar problem as Seiko / grand Seiko - vast price points
It was a good video, but think you are certainly wrong on the movements, you should look into the Heuer 02 and 02t production. They created their own factory to produce this movement - look into it.

Growing up my perception of a Rolex sub has always been 'old grandpa watch' whenever I see a Tag Heuer I'm always excited to know if its the latest one or the previous model. Is it the Carrera or Grand Carrera. Then bam a Heuer 02t came out of the cage roaring. I'm always swept by Tags new and innovating focus. Just think of it, the same exact Subs and Speedys have been popping out of their production line since the 60s. Rolex owners would tell me they hold their value, I tell them so you're taking care of it for someone else to enjoy them in the future? let that sink in for a minute...
