  • Every once in awhile we get a guest in our studio that causes everybody in the building to put down their work and wander over to take a look. Allen Toussaint is one of those guests. The legendary New Orleans piano man/producer has been a guiding light for musicians in the Crescent City and beyond for over a half a century. From The Nevilles to Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint has played and recorded with some of the best in business. He sat down with Jay Trachtenberg in Studio 1A for a brief chat and a few songs. Enjoy!

Saw him live in a little park in Colorado (free!) 10+ years ago by accident. I knew who he was and I wasn't gonna miss it. He was better than I hoped and I had a high bar. This TV show is so cool, so tight and, the last thing he does with Southern Nights is beyond good. He died a couple years alter, what a loss.

I've been hearing this on the radio for years but never paid attention to the message and feeling of the song. It is bringing tears to my eyes. Rest in Peace Allen Toussaint. What a treasure.

Ο Allen Toussaint ήταν μία από τις πιο εμβληματικές και επιδραστικές μορφές του New Orleans R&B του 20ου αιώνα.

Finally, a version by the songwriter. Covered by Lee Dorsey (1970, as a 2 part single) & the Pointer Sisters. I put all in my PS playlist.

The Grand Old Man, The Guy Who Wrote the Book...wow. He is featured in a TREME segment with Elvis Costello, and he is a total joy, and a musical force of nature. This is a new version for me..I heard the Pointers version and kinda stopped there. The more fool, me!!!

I love this guy. Found him in my relative old-age. There are two great compilations, 'New Orleans Funk', parts 1 & 2. It was an education to find those. I've been more into New Orleans music since than anything else.
