Its not. There is a reason these races happen at this time of year. The iditarod happens in march. The idea is to have the biggest race at the end of the season after you have gotten in all your winter training. They don't WANT a ton of snow. They want a trail. If its dumping snow on you during the race it makes a slower trail. And in these long races it makes staying on course harder. Plus like thats how all the dogs die in the iditarod is by inhaling snow for 12 hours a day while running and then they die from pneumonia. Dog sled racing needs to be banned and the iditarod is cruel af. I worked in sprint racing, shorter races suck too. Its such a brutal and ugly sport it haunts my nightmares the crap I have seen and heard.
probs a skidoo or polaris. And I think they switch around alot. These guys basically run these machines to death everyyear. You need the newest and best to have a chance in this race. i don't think i see a single Yamaha. And I saw a banner for arctic cat. But it looks like most people are riding skidoo or polaris. I notice up north the yamahas are put to work. I bet alot of the trail help and stuff are on yamahas.
Because you are also going way faster than that. This is an endurance race. Your machine IS going to get hot after running ALL DAY. New machines are water cooled. alot of older machines are air cooled. Modern snowmobiles are pretty intense little machines running at pretty high compression. And snowmobiles in general run at high rpms. This race pushes them to their limits. I used to drag in snowmobiles trails. And my life got hard once we got a water cooled one. pulling a heavy drag at low speed not enough air moved over the radiator to keep it cool. before that we had a much larger air cooled bear cat and that one did it way better though it was a total pig of a machine
Like Dakar or Isle of man? Something like that? I hope your not referring to that dog sled racing BS. That should be illegal. Im speaking from experience, I work in dog sled racing. The iditarod and the quest are WAY over romanticized. If people really knew how it worked and peoples motivations theyd agree with me. If you would stop mushing dogs because you can't race you shouldn't do it at all.
@@michaelcrook8329 Im sorry to hear about your friends. I worked in dog sled racing. That crap needs to be banned. Humans make the choice to put their lives on the line. Dogs don't. If the heated visor on a closed helmet fails, you are done for, can't see anything because of condensation. Best to use open face with winter goggles...
Its cooler than that stupid dog sled racing BS. Alot more money in it too. If alaskans were smart THIS would be their state sport. Its racing strategy. And have the money to actually do it. Alot of those guys are snowmobile mechanics and shit.
Channel 2's coverage of the Iron Dog is one of the only reasons I miss having cable. You guys do a great job!
Great coverage very professional I felt like I was there.
holy shit they could have rode a dirtbike on that track
Cool flick. Some really tough guys and girls .
great video!
It’s live now
I always heard that they raced in pairs .. Now I see two sleds .. A good safety idea.
Everyday life here. Riding with snowmobiles held together with duct tape and snare wire.
For 2000 miles at a shot though? This is an endurance race.
The winners were on MY15 Polaris Axys 600 Switchback sleds with the Pro-XC rear suspension. First production year for this Polaris chassis.
Yes and Polaris is so happy with it, it’s now discontinued
That was a shit yr for snow, normally there is 4' plus all over the state by then.
Hey one mistake he said going down river to ruby it’s 52 miles upriver from galena
How sad is it that in February in Alaska there is now snow...... WTF?

What's with the Duct tape? Wind protection?
probably to keep his helmet from chafing his forehead.
It’s too keep frostbite away the duct tape protects his face
How long would it take a grasshopper with a wooden leg to kick all of the seeds out of a dill pickle?
As long as it would take a armless woodchuck to chuck all the wood he could chuck.
Why not install a radiator, or just run a fan cooled machine if you're only doing 35 at times?

Wtf are you talking about? It's never 40 below in Febuary in Galena! It usually ranges from 0° degrees to 32°
Snowmachine is Alaska-speak for snowmobile.
Cainsquest in Labrador is Longer, Tougher and Bigger!
Yea but it still canada
@@dircon75 and?
I cant believe how many AXYS suspension Polaris sleds were used. I guess they are pretty good eh?

what type of sleds are those I know there polaris but engine sizer and ect.
Stephen Mecheski you must have a 600cc engine for the iron dog, but the sled type doesn’t matter.

2k miles! Holy shit the race to the moon might be the only thing that compares
How’s 2000 km longer then 3200 lol not the longest race
I'd love to be able to race in this event if there was an amateur class. I'm not a pro snocross rider......
These birds are definitely not snocross riders haha
theres no snow lmao
Why would anyone wear an open face helmet? That’s absolutely ridiculous. BTW.. No arctic cat has ever finished....
Really strange... is it a rule/sponsorship thing from Iron Dog?
Thats so not true lol, just back in 2017 the winners were riding cats
