The legal description of the time (and now) was "Auxiliaries". Mercenaries hire themselves out, fight under any flag and in any uniform. Auxiliaries are rented by out their ruler as a whole unit, maintaining their allegiance to that ruler, and serving in their usual uniforms under their usual colors. They were a stream of income for their ruler. Friedrich II, of Hesse Kassel, used the payments from George III and others to fund a lot of public works while keeping taxes low. On top of that, Friedrich II, was George III's uncle and William, of Hesse-Hanau, was George's nephew.

Also written "Stoffl" or "Stoffel" in German. But it's not that common nowadays anymore.

There is a novel by Sandra Paretti about the history of the Hessian mercenaries in the American War of Liberation "The Winter That Was a Summer". A three-part film was also made about it in 1976 with the same title.

So, the America Revolutionary war was fought over paying too high taxes to the British. Yet, they only paid 1 shilling per annum, while the British themselves were paying 26 shillings per annum. Therefore, it was a war fought on a false premise .

Yes indeed, wars are often the first solution, rather than the last and they are often fought on lies.

Any amount of taxes is too high IF you don’t have any representation for your group in the government,

The taxes were to help pay for the 7 years war with France that Britain had just won. If Britain had lost that war, their colonists would have been driven out and replaced by French colonists.
Military protection isn't free, British tax payers couldn't be expected to pay for colonists.

Just to let you know, we are still paying taxes to the U.K. And I agree. Every war we've had are made up of lies.

That's correct. The American colonies wanted representation but in truth the people of Britain didn't have much representation anyway, so what made the American colonists so special? Really they were a bunch of entitled Karens when you think about it who didn't want to pay their fair share.

They were a mercenary force. So their only patriotism was to their thoughts at the time. Mr East will have probably merged into the population when the chances of a British win were over and will have probably claimed to be a American patriot to live. Human survival, not "patriotism" which is over valued and a mistaken evaluation.

Actually, alot of Hessians who stayed were enticed by the religious freedom that America offered, and thousands chose to stay. Some even defected during the war and joined the Continental Army. Don't be so quick to judge these men who lived in different times.
