What's funny is that quite a few Japanese are now aware that Kei truck is kinda popular in the states and love the way they customise. There is a trend happening which is to lift and put off road tires like they do in the states.
It was great to see the modern version of my 1996 4WD Hijet. Some states allow the older kei trucks to be driven on the street but federal regulations (DOT for safety and EPA for emissions) do not allow the newer kei trucks to be driven on roads. I think the EPA exemptions are 20 or 21 years old, but the DOT regulation exempts antique vehicles after 25 years old. If you want to drive on the road, your state must allow it AND imported vehicles must be over 25 years old to be exempt from both EPA and DOT regulations. The federal regulations purport to ensure that Americans are driving safer, less polluting and more efficient vehicles but in practice result in Americans driving less safe, more polluting and less efficient old vehicles. That said, many of the 25+ year old vehicles from Japan are in surprisingly good shape with very low miles.
“Don’t fix what isn’t broke.” They really don’t change too often with the design being as solid as it is! Yeah the 25 year rule is the easiest way to import them but the way we did this one is certifying an off-road truck and getting it plated. Depends where you live but this is not legal advise haha!

The funny thing is that most of these kei trucks will be used as ACTUAL work trucks (as trucks were supposed to be used as work and commercial vehicles in the early days) as opposed to bigger, powerful, and expensive trucks that spend most of their time in the grocery store parking lot.
I agree! This thing has hauled way beyond its weight in lumber, sand, rocks, and logs, it’s a tool instead of a commuter like most pickups these days. (My daily is a pickup as well haha)
Thanks for the info! With Daihatsu being owned by Toyota I bet the internals are a mirror image between the Hijet and Pixis but I’ve not looked much into them yet.
It is a considerable enthusiast that imports new cars. The new car cannot run in the public road basically in the United States. Anyway, it is the best car to use it for work in private land. It is light and is tough and does not break down.
You don't need to buy them used at all. In the USA they have dealers that sell them even 2022 year of them. They are ment for off-roading like an ATV. If you wish I can post a link to one of the ones I found.
I’m definitely learning more from varying comments! It seems it really depends on what state you’re coming from but feel free to put any links that could help out on that. Thanks!
Yes this one was a brand new one, it’s just not imported as a car so it’s for off-road use. There are some states and counties to allow ORV’s to get plates and be street legal but that’s not cross state line applicable or always easy. It also makes them cost significantly more because there are so few.
No price discussion. But last time I checked pricing, I couldn't justify the cost versus a good used 4x4 truck that is street legal making it much more functional. Lift bed? If you gotta have one, there are kits to turn you bed into a dump bed. Even the 20+ year old versions are in a price range that gets too close to a highway driveable, REAL truck. Just me, but it's more in comparing these mini trucks to an ATV.
That’s a good take! You’re totally right and I don’t think a mini-truck would fit the need for most people out there, especially with so many other great options, it’s more of a UTV that can go on the road. Difficulty to import increases the price which why you don’t see too many of them, but just perks of a free market, if you have the money and the desire then you can get your hands on one. Neat experience to drive though!
Depends on the state. For a it to be classified fully as car you can register it has to be 25 years old. But it can also be imported as an off-road/farm vehicle. This allows it to be used for off road use only, but in some states and counties you can then get it registered for road legal use. It has limitations such as no interstate usage, or State line crossing (pending the states) but this one rarely goes on the road anyways, it’s used primarily off road on private property.
Hey! A couple people have left links below of dealers and sites, I’ve not found a definitive list of where it’s legal and not but I’ve not dug too much. Really more of a case by case to look the rules up to individual states. I’ve definitely learned more from the comments others have put!
the mini truck looks great! Question: I thought the import "rules" on these mini trucks was that they had to be at least 25 years old. At least that's what I see people say on RUclips when they purchased a mini truck. I have never seen such a new mini truck in the USA before. How did you get around this rule?
There are a few ways but don’t quote me on laws, I’m not a lawyer haha. The 25 year old rule is the easiest way to import them, that rolling clock is constantly letting the ones right at 25 years make it in. What we did for this one is it is imported as an off-road vehicle to be used as work truck, think like a tractor or a dirt bike. In some states, if they pass the requirements like blinkers, ect, you can then go and get them inspected and approved by a judge then registered a the DOT to get a license plate so it is street legal. I’m sure there are still some stipulations about driving to other states, but what works works! This one will stay off-road most the time.

I’ve not personally noticed any limiter on this truck, it revs however you throttle it, and for me the speed limiting was due to the 660cc engine being maxed out going about 55mph. At that speed with these tires it was getting itself into a death shake and the little engine didn’t seem to have much more in it to gain any speed. Does it have a governor typically?
I am finding. Most dealers in Japan don't want to talk about importing newer trucks, they wanna stick with 25 years old or older. Do you have a dealer in japan you would recommend to use ? Thankyou mike weaver
Unfortunately I do not! I’ve not worked with anyone direct in Japan, most US dealers wouldn’t give you too much info anyways simply because they do the work and mark it up.
I noticed you said that it went 50 mph. How did you get around the limitation of 25 mph? I’m getting one in a few weeks and would like to get that limiter off without paying somebody $350 to do it. Any help would be appreciated.
Excellent question! I may not be too much help as this one did not have a limiter on it, but here’s what I found. From what I’m reading there are a few options they do for limiting, but probably a device that communicates with the speedo detecting the speed and then clicks the fuel pump on and off based on your top speed. So first I would determine that in your location it’s fully legal to have it off, then know how comfortable you are removing your dash to find it typically behind the center. You’re going to be cutting/splicing the wires jumping past the box entirely or in some cases I’ve seen people say cut the yellow wire, which should be the speedo signal in, meaning the device never tells the pump to shut off at any speed. I know this answer is very vague but there is a ton of variability on which vehicle and which device, and without working on it myself I can’t be sure. If you’re comfortable working on harnesses then it should be doable, I personally would, but know cutting the wrong wire may cause it to die completely and you may be in a worse spot than paying someone to do it!

That’s good to know! Hopefully supply will increase to make them more easily had.
Might be wrong but i think that is only if the 25 years or older
@@nafod32 that I am not sure of. I just know that in NC they can now be titled as trucks and are street legal.
There is no other car in the world as convenient as this one.
Maintain it properly, by japan
Maintenance is also fairly convenient as well! It’s only not useful if you need to haul people, but I’ve got a video coming soon on the identical van version of this truck!
Porfavor traigan a peru yo quisiera uno de esas bellezas
One long drive down to Peru! Probably would not make it past the Darién gap.
Price?
Price on a loaded one like this with the dump is around 25k but you can find older ones starting in the low thousands and then going up all the way from there.
@@PhilipBlank Thanks! I was thinking this would be a good rig for the farm. Thank you for the reply.
Did it cost a fortune?
Haha everything is relative, but you can find them between $10-25K depending on the year, location, and milage.
@@PhilipBlank it’s comparable to a side by side.
COOL""""""""""!!!!!
It’s pretty fun!
この dump は本当に使い勝手が良いよ
Yes, just a switch of the lever! Works very well.
I came to this video cause they are being sold in Ohio for 25 k. They look nice. Would get one if i had a farm... or money 😂
Haha that would be a helpful start.
구매방법궁금합니다
It may not be too easy over there! But Japan is not too far so maybe it is easier. Wish I could help more!
Im Prinzip ein schönes Auto, aber das Lenkrad ist leider auf der falschen Seite.
Haha being on the wrong side is a part of what makes it fun!
Nice
Hey thanks!
Kapan ada di indonesia
I couldn't say!
日本でも富裕者(農家)しか購入出来ないね。
この、軽トラックは一家に一台あれば仕事も出来る!!! 欲しい車ですよ(^^♪
Thank you for that info! Interesting to learn who can afford it there, it seems like a simple vehicle but value changes everywhere! Hopefully someday you can get one!
Kenapa di Indonesia belum di pasarkan
Most likely for the reasons of almost all foreign marketing decisions, legality and tariffs of other countries. But I don’t have knowledge of your particular market so I can’t say for sure!
農道の軽トラ~ポルシェ活躍中~💪ok
The Porsche of the fields!
just a comment but that thumbnail does not make you look like a very tall man my guy.
Haha you're not wrong on that!
Why can’t the US build something this cool and reliable?
I believe the reason is EPA and DOT haha
"Kay"
Haha yes thank you, I realized I said it wrong when editing and it was not worth reshooting.
they where cool when a couple grand, but not 5 plus
Yeah sadly demand has spiked and supply has not improved so they really are priced way higher than they need to be. Great if you had a few saved to sell though!
شاحنة رائعة جدا
Indeed! Neat little truck!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💗💗💗💗💗💗
It’s a fun little truck!
Блин,все клёво,но коврики грязные все портят
Yeah, neat truck! Buy translation says something about a dirty rug I don’t understand, sorry haha.
交換したタイヤがメッチャカッコ悪い
That’s no fun! These tires are not very good for on-road use either, lots of vibrations.

I'd seen some of those, that'd be a wild addition!
日本では、アメリカ仕様の車が公道を走れるのに、アメリカは日本仕様の車は公道を走れないんだ!これは不公正だな。大いに抗議しなければ
The US has some very strict crash, seatbelt, and engine rules from the DOT and EPA so there are hoops we have to jump through for things like this. Very much a pain!
