This is definitely one of the best games in the series. Probably my second favorite after TM2. I really loved this game. What's really ingrained in my memory is the soundtrack. I hadn't played 1 and 2 so I can't compare. But this soundtrack was incredible.

Very well done review. I grew up on TM1 and 2 and I like 3 way more than either of them and always have. I remember whenever TM2012 was coming out and I was fooling around on the internet trying to figure out a release date and I first discovered the hatred a lot of gamers had for 3 and was in absolute disbelief. 3 got so many things right and better than 2 or 1 ever did. They had a bunch of diverse specials including my favorite in the entire series of Club Kid, they had a lot of varied maps including two of my favorite (LA and London), they got the cartoony comic book feel which I much prefer to the overly violent and real life cut scenes Jaffe loves to spit out, the AI had the perfect balance of focusing on you but more than willing to fight eachother so it actually felt like you made it out of a every man for themselves dog fight rather than the newer game where you just feel pissed off because it's everyone vs you. I could go on buy life is short so I will end with this Black > 3 > Head On > 2012> 4 > 2 > 1.
It's because of this game that I checked out Pitchshifter. They are a band that has drastically changed their sound. I highly suggest checking out their first two albums which are the epitome of Industrial Metal. From there, some band members shifted around and they changed their sound to what you hear in this game; a more Techno-Punk sound.
left right down, left right down, left right down ^_^ It's amazing how much fun some multiple specials can be. I remember making a chart to see what the damage ratings were like for all of the characters. If TM3 is your favourite, one of the most useful tricks in the game is to enter the jump command when moving off a ramp to increase your range instead of waste turbo. Outlaw was my favourite. Zapping people into the sky or just draining their health really fast was fun. Oh, and Club Kid. The Pull on that move was especially fun like in Calypso's blimp on the second level. It was enough to pull people up. That or cause a small little black hole full of fire and pullet damage in the corner. I think I'll go play that tonight now.
I love TM3..I have nothing but good memories...I remember me and my friends would go to London add alot of minions and club kids with infinite specials...that was so much fun and crazy...this game was just straight fun as a kid...
I'm sorry but I totally disagree. Twisted Metal 2 has looks way better from the cut scenes to gameplay. Twisted Metal 2 had almost a cartoony art style and was much more colorful. Twisted Metal 3 is hard to look at. Even in 1998 the reason this game is so hated is the developers missed the style and creativity of the second game. Best example is the story and cutsecnes. No comparison
@Stephen Thomas Not really. Coming from someone who started this series with 2 and still consider 2 the best by far. I absolutely loved 3 and 4. Played all of them equally. Beat the game with every character in all of them including small brawl. Each has their own charms. Yes I will always pick 2 over all of them but they aren't nearly as bad as people say they are.
To this day, I don't know why TM3 (or TM4 and SMall Brawl) never made it to Australian shores, but from what I saw of the game on youtube, it didn't seem that bad. I will admit that the characters just felt wrong, but I can also say that I would've at least tried it.
I still remember when my cousin brought this over and we played it non-stop for an entire weekend. I also was one of the few that didn’t understand the hate for this game. I feel like the frame rate and physics were a step up from the previous 2 games. Once I finally owned a copy, I beat the game with every character.
The problem with TM3 is that it felt incomplete because 2 bosses were unplayable, the story and endings lacked content and explanation. TM4 is an improvement on characters, story, content, and story but not perfect. TM4 should had a story behind the bosses more. TM3 had the best gameplay to me.
This may be David Jaffe’s and the fanbase’s least favorite Twisted Metal game, but it’s still a good game. In the storyline they kept the driver of Warthog, Mr.Grimm (until the 4th game) and Minion (sort of) consistent. Darkside’s driver Mr.Ash never had an alliance with Calypso, Marcus Kane is a criminally insane homeless man, Axel’s story never occurred, drivers of Outlaw now no longer want to put an end to Calypso’s evil doings, Needles Kane is supposed to be a serial killer (you think he’d want candy and ice cream!?) and Minion would want to take Calypso first before returning to hell. This is non-canon.
TM2 and TM3 are my favorites of the series and I've played both for so many hours when I was a teen. They are very different games though. I liked the stories and presentation on TM2 more, the soundtrack was awesome and each stage had a very memorable music to it (did not care for Rob Zombie soundtrack in TM3). The stages were awesome! I like TM3 stages too, but TM2's were better. I like TM3's physics though, I like that the cars leave tracks on the ground and when you hit them with a weapon the power of the impact makes them slide on the ground (Primeval's special was especially good at that). Some cars got really improved, for example Outlaw; if you had multiple specials, you could engage all the electric shocks at once, bouncing all the cars you'd come into contact with high up in the air and sometimes killing them instantly. Clubkid was great! I like the car designs too. Minion looks great. Primeval was an awesome boss, what I liked about Primeval was that he was actually normal sized, not something huge and ridiculous like Darktooth. And his special weapon was awesome! But the thing is, I like TM2 physics. Overall, I love both games, they are distinct and great in their own way.
I’m right there with you. While I did try TM2 first but it didn’t make a huge impression on me. But TM3 was the first One I owned and it’s where my love for the series started. TM3 is still very much playable today.
I was with twisted metal from the beginning and I loved this game. Mainly for the multiplayer. Me and my friends preferred 3 over the other two games and would play for hours
I still like TM3. I prefer Auger and Thumper myself, Auger for his armor and Thumper for his mobility. And both can very quickly deal with Prime Evil on the blimp if you use their specials to throw/launch him into the pit on the bottom.
I hope you'll review more car combat games! Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense is one of my favorites. Another I never see anyone talk about was Motor Mayhem: Vehicular Combat League.
Man i agree with you on this one this is the game that got me into twisted metal and i love this game better.. Yeah the story is horrible but the gameplay and everything is just fun and i like the music
Glad to hear that i´m not the only one that loves this game. My favorte one, actually (yup, hate me), probably because was my first Ps1 game. i still play it to this day.
Saaame. This game is an overly-hated, criminally underrated game. I also grew up playing this game, and it is still definitely one of my favorites in the series along with 4. If you can get past the goofy stories (which most hardcore fans seem not to be able to do.) , this is an overall GREAT game.
I do think the story and cutscenes aren’t nearly as good as other games in the series (the only other one worse is probably 4) but the stages and music and gameplay, they’re all realllly good.
@@matthewryan3798 I'd like you to take that logic and apply it to any of your favorite film franchises and then tell me if you feel the same. People didn't hate this game because it wasn't a rehash of the first two. They hated it because it was lazy with regards to the lore. In part 2, Marcus Kane was a brooding character that was considered crazy because he was the only one that knew that reality was a lie. In part 3, he's a zany cartoonish homeless man. In part 1, Bruce (the driver of Thumper) wants to rid his neighborhood of crime and make it peaceful. Then, in part 2, after having cleaned up the neighborhood, he now wants to reward himself and ends up ruling the world (albeit a destroyed one). In part 3, he wants to "hang with his homies", completely dumping all over the sense of ambition he had in the first two and making him out to look like some stupid, moron who didn't understand the gravity of the situation and the stakes at risk in the contest. Finally, there is Calypso. In the first two games, he's a clever manipulator who gave you exactly what you wanted as long as it was selfish or evil and provided your choice of words didn't allow him the opportunity to twist your request. Meanwhile, part 3 has him like "Oh, this is what you requested? Yeah? Well, fuck you because reasons!" Just making him into a blatant dick shows that the writers had no understanding of the source material or character development. Don't even get me started on Sweet Tooth, who went from murderous psychopath to the 60's Batman show version of The Joker. Going back to the film franchise, it would be like having Tony Stark being the cool, sarcastic Robert Downey Jr. version we all know and love changed into a Dennis Miller-level one-line wise ass in Infinity War.
I definitely enjoyed the video AND respect your opinion haha. But I do have to say Twisted Metal 2 cars handled much better to me than TM3. TM2 and Black are favs for me. Meet the Creeper I heard first from TM3 and is also my favorite Rob Zombie song!
I really hate what they did to HammerHead after the first Twisted Metal. In the very first Twisted Metal, Hammerhead was one of the best vehicles if not the best and his sound he made when he used his monster crusher special was so awesome!! In Twisted Metal 2, Hammerhead is now one of the worst vehicles in the game. So he went from being the best in the previous game to basically the worst. In Twisted Metal 3, they made Hammerhead a granny??? Why in the hell would they do that??? What grandma would drive a monster truck?? Come one!!
A solid profile on the game, as an older gamer & fan of the series since it's launch I bought "Twisted Metal 3" the day it came out, I think reflecting back on it I was vastly disappointed with the graphics (favorite cars being so different & lackluster looking power-ups) compared to SingleTrac's 2 previous games & quickly gave the game away after only one sitting with it, I played & beat both games on Hard with the previous games & all the vehicles. Since then I've recently picked "TM3" up again & will look for the 4th game as well, I suppose as a kid & being it was your first game in the series you built an affection for this 3rd one, it's all naturally relative to the gamer & where they were at the time, I was 32 years old when the first "Twisted Metal" came out.
Honestly, my only real problem with Twisted Metal III is the fact that you have some pretty impressive graphics for the cutscenes(not that I minded the cool, if not cheesy comic bookish cutscenes from the second game) for the time yet the character designs looked way too cartoony and each ending is a really unsatisfying two-second joke. Especially since you have to beat the whole game with each character to see a two second joke(at least before the advent of RUclips) Granted, from what I heard David Gaffe say(I think that's his name) he said they had a very limited time to make this game and with that considered, this game is kind of impressive.
I also remember being a kid and not knowing how to unlock Sweet Tooth and being jealous of that little kid from the Adam Sandler movie "Big Daddy" because in a scene you can see the kid playing TMIII as Sweet Tooth
Woah woah woah I do not hate TM3! I have a lot of nostalgia and fun memories and LOVED this game as a teen. I played TM3 and TM2 probably equally and loved both!
The one thing I hated about tm3 is that taller vehicles like sweet tooth and darkside have a tendency to flip over a lot. Some of the reworked specials I really loved. Such as the exploding sweet tooth head, which a direct hit, you can get maximum damage. Thumper’s reworked special, I also really like. The one I don’t like is Roadkill’s reworked special. Since it’s a slightly more powerful motar weapon. Not to mention Hammerhead’s ramming special I can’t get behind. The one that I’d considered op when you spam the rear attack is Outlaw’s Omni Tazer. If you have enough specials, you can hit a vehicle and make it fly high enough in the sky for an instant kill.
I played TM3 a lot back then. It may have lacked the pitch perfect tone and atmosphere of TM1&2, but it played well and felt like an evolution in the series. Hating on TM4 makes sense to me, but why so many people dismiss and shit on TM2012 completely confuses the hell out of me. Just because it lacks the characters so what, the GAME is amazing. AMAZING. FULL STOP lol The PS4 was the 90s revival era and deserved a TM game in some form. unfortunate.
I preferred Minion from TM2, he was the coolest version of himself there. TM3's Minion just looks like a middle schoolers wet dream of spikes and "coolness" lol, but Flower Power also looks like her neck is broken from turning her head that much. I loved this game as a kid, but hated the CGI cut scenes compared to TM2's stylish artwork.
TM III is the only Twisted Metal game that supports SYSTEM LINK. This title and Rogue Trip are the only two car combat games on the PS1 with this feature. It's nice to battle side-by-side with a friend, each with your own TV screen. 4-PLAYER action is also better with split screen on 2 linked consoles.
Sorry I'm late, but the game is hated by fans because of the crappy lore. My favorite game of the series is twisted metal 4, and it's unfortunate that 3 and 4 are considered the black sheep. You acknowledged the fact that the story is stupid, nonsensical, and not even cannon, and that's why people hate it so.
It's not just cause you played 3 first. I played 2 first and I loved 3 and 4. 2 is by far the best but I spent countless hours as a kid beating 2,3,4, and small brawl with every character. I remember going to Toys-R-Us and buying 3 and buying 4 when they first came out and I was not at all disappointed with any of them. Each one brings something new to the table and each one has their own problems.
My brother and I love Twisted Metal and when 3 came out we got it for Christmas. The presents from my aunt or sitting there under the tree for over a week. My brother and I knew it was twisted metal 3 in the game shaped package so we cleverly slit it open and took the game out of the wrapping and played it two nights in a row before officially opening it on Christmas Day. We had heard that you could be minion and Sweet Tooth but didn't have a password so we had to do the first and only time ever calling a hotline and got the password for both.
TM3's main issue is its lack of ambition, and its bizarre physics. It felt a bit too corporate, like we were witnessing Sony's idea of what a Twisted Metal game is, rather than what it ought to be. I think there was a lot of potential to make levels more engaging, and to finesse the controls, but the final product ended up a bit lackluster. It's overall a pretty fun game however, and the hate it received was way over the top.
This was the first twisted metal game I owned. I hate how calypso looks in this game. My favorite thing in this series is the story and they botched it big time in this title. Great review 😊
Rob Zombie is also industrial metal in addition to Pitchshifter being industrial rock/metal but to each his own of course. I like all the songs and Twisted Metal 3 has one of my favorite soundtracks in addition to 1, 2, and Black.
I honestly dont hate TM3 personally I played 2 more but that's just because I grew up playing it. I played tm2 to the point where I had memorized the codes for the game. Not just infinate weapons and God mode but use minions special and mega guns. TM2 was awesome
French player here who never got TM 3, TM 4 released in my country or Europe. Really looking to buy a copy from the US now. This really looks like TM 2 and I love it.
Who did the amazing track for London? That guitar masterpiece is fucking incredible play to, and I sti bump the TM3 disc in my cd player when I drive just for that track. It recalls all the great heavy metal from the first two games.
Fair review. My first twisted metal game was the second one but I did enjoy the 3rd one. I think the order that I like the original four is: 2,3,4,1 I didn't care for the original and the fourth one seemed way to easy and the physics got even worse. Tm3 was enjoyable and as you said I think the biggest problem was the total lack of consideration of character stories. I like the levels for the most part and the environment weapons were cool. The music in 3,4 was great as well. I think people just love to hate sometimes and I had a hard time getting used to the different feel of the third one but again, I did enjoy it but it sucked after working to hard to beat the game to see a lame and just outright lazy video at the end.
I think sweet tooths' ending could have worked with more depth. Instead of ice cream he makes "I Scream" treats where he murders people, butchers their bodies and turns them into sundaes made of gore. Part of the thrill for him is hearing his victims scream in horror and pain as he does it. His wish is to turn the entire human race into the ultimate I Scream treat. When he wins, Calypso gives Sweet Tooth the means to kill everyone on earth and create a massive mountain out of their bodies. He only feels glee for a moment until he realizes there is no one left to kill. No more killing, no more screaming, no more I Scream treats to make. Eventually he climbs to the top of his gore mountain and spends the rest of his life screaming into the sky because it is the only Scream he can hear now.
The gameplay just feels slower and slippery than the previous games. One of the things I didn’t care for as much is the level design mostly being small and empty areas. I also felt like some of the level weapons were over powered. Like Hangar 18 is essentially a race to get the UFO power up as anyone caught in that blast will probably be dead or at least close to dead.
I never hated this game... played the first 4 all the time back in the day... but I cant help but feel the first 2 were more chaotic and destructive, I gravitate towards those so much now!
Man, you sort of brushed over it, but for whatever reason I...just loved the CPU ally in this game. I always played with one, didn't even care that it cost me getting an ending. I loved having that bugger around helping me.
I love all the Twisted Metal Games except small brawl and I didn't play Twisted Metal (2012) I don't own ps3 or 4. Fun Fact: You can save Twisted Metal 3 (not level progress but settings and unlocked characters)to memory card by putting in the code Start,Start,Start,Start,Start at the password screen.
TM3 wasn't my first game, Black was, even then 3 is my favorite game in the entire series. I have more hours into this game then I do most games I have enjoyed in my life. This game is amazing, even to this day. I still wish I has my ps1 just to play this game again.
It is a fun game to play and very nostalgic, but there is no excuse for the shitty ending scenes. "Your wish is to stay home and watch tv" "Your wish is to have a BBQ" like wtf? This is the best they can think of?
I started with the original Twisted Metal and I honestly liked Twisted Metal 3. Aside from the character stories the game was good. I'm on the same page as you with Minion being my favorite character of the series. When you defeat the cars of the mid stage then have that slight calmness before you see 'Minion' pop up on the enemy bar you knew things got way more serious
I still prefer TM2 to 3, but I'll agree that this game received wayyy more hate than it deserved. It wasn't bad IMO, just a bit disappointing as a sequel. Still, like you said, it could have been way worse.
Twisted Metal 3 was damn good fun although i still preferred TM2. I'm sorry but i used to leap with joy when friends were allowed to sleep over because we knew we'd be playing TM2 all night in my room in the basement. Many many many good nights, not to mention it was an unexpected x-mas gift :)
This was an excellent review and I agree 💯. I really never understood why these games received so much hatred by fans. I agree that the characters are stupid and that they don't fit with the original idea behind the first two games but the controls and gameplay are much better imo. I'll take Twisted Metal 3 and 4 over 1 and 2 any day but that's just me.
I started off with Twisted Metal 2 and loved it, then I played Twisted Metal 3 and loved it too. I then played the 1st one and it was yuck I then I got the fourth one for Christmas and didn’t like it as much. The vehicles looked too small and I missed the F1 car. I also got Vigilante 8 Second Offence during that time so that took most of my time. If you haven’t done it yet, would you please review both Vigilante games?!!?

If TM3 is your favourite, one of the most useful tricks in the game is to enter the jump command when moving off a ramp to increase your range instead of waste turbo. Outlaw was my favourite. Zapping people into the sky or just draining their health really fast was fun. Oh, and Club Kid. The Pull on that move was especially fun like in Calypso's blimp on the second level. It was enough to pull people up. That or cause a small little black hole full of fire and pullet damage in the corner. I think I'll go play that tonight now.
When you drive in tm3, backrounds and objects have this subtle bouncing effect when it comes towards you it's not smooth like in Twisted one or two
I had no idea people hated this game so much, it was also my introduction to the series.
3 lost all personality, and black took itself way too seriously.
I know this video is old ass balls, but I really gotta give you props for that F Bomb.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard you curse in a video
👍👍👍👍
Really nice to see someone else giving Twisted Metal 3 some praise I personally think it's the best one in the series
Ha Ha Ha Ha......
Great review I like how you actually get into he game
Please review TM1, TM4, and TM Head On. I love your reviews of all the TM games, so far. Perhaps, maybe even do a review of Rogue Trip?
I remember this game looking great but hating most of it. The music was the best part.
I hope you'll review more car combat games! Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense is one of my favorites. Another I never see anyone talk about was Motor Mayhem: Vehicular Combat League.
Motor mayhem is fucking awesome, it's got a good variety of weapons than tm3 can hope to achieve!
I loved Twisted Metal 3! This is one of my favorite games in the series!!
The moment I saw this all my memories of this game came flooding back to me. This was the second PlayStation game I ever played next to Spyro.
I love thumper in this game. I used to lure and freeze enemies including primeval on the blimp. and just use my special to push them to the pit.
I prefere Spectre and Roqdkill.
Personally speaking this is another older game that is a victim of fanboyism where its shit on because the original people did not make it
I can agree with that.
It was shit though
3 was ok but the thing is number 2 was like dam near perfect
Especially since you have to beat the whole game with each character to see a two second joke(at least before the advent of RUclips)
Granted, from what I heard David Gaffe say(I think that's his name) he said they had a very limited time to make this game and with that considered, this game is kind of impressive.
I like to pretend Twisted Metal is just an alternate reality of Mortal Kombat , and all the fighters alter egos like Axel is just Jax ect
This is the first game I played in the series and man, good ole memories of me and my mother beating the game with every character 😢❤
Same. Good times 😪
Wasn't Minions password like right right right, left left. This game was great and I played it for hours. London was also my favorite level as well.
I don't hate TM3 I find it ok like the other TM games
I first played TM2 and then 3. And i really liked 3 better. You are correct, the gameplay was better than 2
I love TM3!!! and the soundtrack
I played TM3 without music and voice lines (except the screams, the cutscenes anf the title music in the intro).
I love all TM games, but 3 is the one I played the most. It's not necessarily the best, but I loved this game so much. Good video, dude.
i can agree i love TM3 & TM4 i kinda get where 989 was going with this and i respect that.
I love all the games including 3 and 4, so you're not alone in liking 3.
Hell yeah brother, way to stick up for my first PlayStation game. 🤘
Rob Zombie is also industrial metal in addition to Pitchshifter being industrial rock/metal but to each his own of course. I like all the songs and Twisted Metal 3 has one of my favorite soundtracks in addition to 1, 2, and Black.
I remember only liking its improved graphics and frame-rates over the second one's.
@Panda Xkills there's more than graphics to a game buddy
Rob zombie
My first and favorite twisted metal
I used to pop it in my CD player and blast Rob Zombie 🤘🏻
I never hated this game... played the first 4 all the time back in the day... but I cant help but feel the first 2 were more chaotic and destructive, I gravitate towards those so much now!
Man, you sort of brushed over it, but for whatever reason I...just loved the CPU ally in this game. I always played with one, didn't even care that it cost me getting an ending. I loved having that bugger around helping me.
Did you ever do a review for TM 4?
8:34 I never noticed the ad for CART World Series there until today
Never got to try the single player for TM3, but the multiplayer was broken. It ran at like 3-5 frames per second.
Remember the code books? I used to go into bookstores and look for the code books for Twisted Metal games and GTA vice city
Can you review Rogue trip? I loved that game as a kid
I loved TM 3 it's under rated
I loved this game. Tokyo was my favorite.
Did the machine guns actually do damage? I could never tell
