    Bringing Ham Radio Techniques to Meshtastic!

      I've already got a Yagi antenna I want to play with for meshtastic. Get some real long range mesh networks set up.

      That’s my next antenna will be a yagi to see how far I can get

    Wouldn't it have been easier to pull the spool to make it straight, and then cut it to the right length? I used this technique to improve the short radio antenna supplied with the esp32 module, the reception improved a lot

    I've not used any of my Heltec V3s any further than just 10 feet or so from my phone or tablet, but I have a RAKwireless WisBlock in my upstairs and I use it with my phone when I'm downstairs and on the opposite of my home, and it works perfectly. I guess those little WisBock antennas must be significantly better. This is a great idea. Thanks for the video.

      As some have already pointed out in the comments, you can straighten out the existing coil and cut to the right size.. but I replaced with a slightly thicker wire as it was just easier and kept the coil as is.. I don't mind it sticking out of the case as it will be installed up in a box on the roof anyway

    Has anyone tried using a NanoVNA to analyse this? I just got my LiteVNA in the post but I am "Level 0" right now.

  • @videolan

    How long was the original coil? Couldn't the straight wire be hidden in the case as it's rather impractical to have it sticking out of the case that prevents it slipping into ones pocket?

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  3 месяца назад +2

      Probably could've yeah

      Yes by all means. This is a pretty common mod to 2.4ghz radio controlled micro quadcopters. You can use insulated stranded wire. The length can be anywhere between 29mm to 33mm and it will still work just fine. I like 30 myself. Cut it to 40mm, strip about 5mm, tin the end, cut off all but about 2mm of the tinned end, push it through the hole in the board and solder it on. Measure what’s left. If it’s between 29 and 33, you can leave it or trim it. If it’s longer trim it to where you want it. Fold the wire down parallel to the screen and enjoy. Just be sure there is room in whatever case you’re using. You could also solder it to the back of the board if it fits snug around the screen.

    Can an IPEX connection be added instead? I'm working on making an aluminum case and will have to install an external antenna.

    For those without the skills or equipment would it be possible to stretch the wire so its either:
    1. Still curled but stretched out to be a bit taller within the case?
    2. Straightened and bent to fit within the case?

    Would you recommend the heltec as a good starter kit, or would something else be better?

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  3 месяца назад +1

      I've been playing with it and can reach other nodes several km away just with the small whip antenna, so yeah I'd say it's a good starter. I'm sure there are better though out there.

      I would recommend this as a good starter. It's an excellent unit and has achieved reception of nearby nodes with an SNR-18.9

      @@HamRadioDX Are the other nodes Heltec V3 with the same antenna? I assume not, as I can only get 100m or so between them.

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  3 месяца назад +1

      There are a couple of V3's, but I suspect they are running outside on antennas. Mine is still inside with some limited testing outside. I still show about 12 nodes inside... but messages are inconsistent due to the low signal

      Well mine snapped as it's work hardened when it's coiled

    • @Hebdomad7
      @Hebdomad7 3 месяца назад +1

      It's a coil antenna. It's going to have different properties to a straight antenna.
      That and straightening that thin of wire is bound to break it.

  • @SeptemberRain8888
    @SeptemberRain8888 2 месяца назад

    Instead of removing the little coil could a person just connect a piece of copper write around 30mm long?

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  2 месяца назад

      If you left the coil in place, then that would increase the antenna length and it would not work
