you should buy a 100 year old spinning rod
I remember finding a Shakespeare 5 foot ocean rod with a matching bait caster from 50s or 60s that I put 80 pound monofilament that I used twice at a local pond to try to go after turtles. Bought it for 10 dollars at a flee market and spent about 40 bucks on the tackle for it. Never caught anything with it and kept it for a few years, sold to a random guy at Iowa lakes for about 80 bucks and he caught a 30 lb softshell turtle a hour later.

Loved seeing the handle spin on every cast! I remember my first baitcaster. The backlash per cast ratio was pretty high! Anytime the 2 of you fish together it's a great video. May you both have a great and safe Christmas. (You know, I don't understand MOST of the folks who watch RUclips videos. How can you "follow" and watch almost every video put out on a channel, but not subscribe, but worse than that, you consistently watch but don't "like" the videos. Don't get it. Maybe you should include a short "how RUclips content providers make a living and get paid" section on your next video. You have what looks like 102 thousand subscribers, but so few likes. That's worse than the backlash per cast ratio of that 100 year old baitcaster!)
Awesome video. I have had a few similar ancient rods come through my collection and never understood how to fish them. This is helpful.

Yo bro use your thumb as a line guide moving the line back and forth on the spool as you reel it In to keep line even and it won't backlash as much kinda like a deep sea rod

I use an antique pflueger Akron reel on an antique 6ft Eagle claw glass rod for bluegill and crappie it’s a lot of fun!
You should take the 100 y/o lures you got and use that 100 y/o rod for a video while ktb TV uses all modern stuff and see which does better old or new

I just found a fishing rod in a old barn these people were about to burn down but I do pesticide and before they burnt it I sprayed so bugs would go to their home and I asked the guy if he was keeping it he told me to take it and it looks identical to this one. Can't wait to clean it up

I've used a direct drive old reel on a 10ft rod for strippers. Press your thumb down and let it run and grab the handles once it stops. I want another direct drive one. The spinning handles are something else when a big fish decides it's taking line.

Fletch, many thanks for this video, comparing the old with the new. You handled that old bait caster very well, after you got command of the casting style that the old reel has. The stainless steel reel, accompanied by a "metal" rod, with porcelain handle, was pure 1920's and 30's. It would be great to see you fish this same antique rod & reel, using some of the old antique baits of yesteryear times. I viewed a previous video you did on antique lures and enjoyed it much. An old timer, like myself, enjoyed watching the old baits perform again. I'm looking forward to the day that a bass pro tournament fisherman wins the big one using an old antique bait to accomplish this mission. As you already know from your own personal experience, those old baits "will" catch fish. In the early 1960's, a local fisherman here in west-central Georgia, used a #4 size Lazy Ike in frog pattern to win a local tournament. The Lazy Ike was a super favorite bait for fishermen in this area (Chatahoochee River) to use. Throwing from a boat to the bank or from the bank out into bass ambush sites. They hit that Ike with extreme prejudice! None of the local fisherman nowadays use toehold Ike anymore. Many aren't acquainted with it, only a currently produced bait. So the Lazy Ike has not been fished in many years by the "young guns" in Bass Pro tournaments.If I was younger, in better health, I would make a concerted effort to win a tournament using a so-called antique bait, like the Lazy Ike. This legendary bait came in several sizes, but from my memory the favorite was the frog pattern, and silver shad-like pattern, in the 3-inch (#3) or the 4-inch (#4). Young Fletch, many thanks for your videos on the old school hardware we once fished with. Old bass fisherman, retired because of health & age, will watch videos like you do all damn day long, or when the cows come in, whichever is first. I would love to see a Ike on the fishing-end of your rod & reel in one of your videos someday. There is still a lot of us "old fishermen" that once fished this "killer-go-getter" bait, the Lazy Ike. Make our day, and thanks again for this video.

When I see you at the classic I’ll have to let you borrow a few of my Dads older baits. Im actually doing new versions of some of them so I’ll bring both so you can do an old vs new. No drag is crazy!! When did the switch over to closed face reels?? I’ve seen some old versions of those!!

I understand that new reels are really high quality vs old reels. But the oldies are made to last. I own 2 1950’s conventional reels, they have never failed me.

Just think, if that rod and reel combo is 100 years old, it predates synthetic lines and would have been spooled with line made out of spider silk or linen.

Noah is allowed to get his feelings hurt, make him use the crap. The competition is great between the two of you and fun to watch. Not sure about the handle material on the old reel, they had ivory and a few had hard plastic. My old fart southbend reel has ivory handles but my old school zebco 202 has porcelain.
