I mean, there's paying homage to something great, but there's also just copying something great to the point of absurdity. Phillips got lucky the first time around, but this sequel proves he really has no good ideas of his own.

It took the commercial momentum from comic book movies and made an interesting choice by taking a darker turn with Joaquin Phoenix’s performance being excellent. Batman doesn’t need to show up in this universe because he is only 12 but they could have him just embracing his Joker persona and causing chaos to Gotham

Just watched it. I enjoyed it. Could have had a lot less singing for my taste, but it definitely sticks with the first and the actors absolutely kill it. I’d give it a solid 8/10

I actually liked Joker 2. The whole internal conflict between Arthur and the Joker was great and thought it was well explored. Much more depthful than the first movie. All the actors are on their A-game (including the supporting cast.) The direction is a big step up, and I actually liked the musical numbers. They let Arthur express himself more than if it was just implied. And the ending.... I LOVED the ending
Arthur was just an inspiration to the next Joker, Arthut was just a mental patience with childhood trauma and the Joker was a creation of his mind, but he never wants to be an icon

I have a take on this. Todd Phillips did this out of spite because he did not want to make a sequel. Maybe Joaquin as well. They seemed very adamant on not wanting to do the sequel. I have a take on this.
Todd Phillips did this out of spite because he did not want to make a sequel.
Maybe Joaquin as well.
They seemed very adamant on not wanting to do the sequel.
Maybe they were pushed by warner bros.
It just seems uncanny how he made the first movie the way he did, by then doing this.
Something just doesn't add up.
Tbf as soon as I heard that Lady Gaga was involved, as a Harley Quinn incarnation no less, my estimation of Todd Phillips as a director plummeted. Joker was so clearly lightening in a bottle. They should have just let it be its own thing.
Saw it last night, what a horrific musical...if i knew thats what it was. ...I'd have stayed away . I like musicals...but not involving Joker. Joker is made to look like a pathetic, weakling, a low IQ loser. .which he is NOT traditionally.
Horrible. This movie destroy himself and the prequel. This is the problem.
It might have worked if Philips used the approach Bob Fosse used in the 1979 musical, " All That Jazz ".
