How to use Toner

  • In this video, I'll be demonstrating how to use toner. It's important to note that there are two major categories of toners, but the application method I'll show you can be effectively applied to both.
    Hydrating toners can be beneficial for your skin as they help to restore its natural balance and moisture levels. These toners typically contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or glycerin, which can attract and retain water molecules, thereby hydrating the skin. Applying a hydrating toner after cleansing leaves your skin feeling soft and plump and can also enhance the absorption and effectiveness of the products applied afterward. These toners can be used daily, both in the morning and evening.
    On the other hand, exfoliating acid toners can help to improve the texture and appearance of your skin. They usually contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or polyhydroxy acids (PHAs). These chemical exfoliants help to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and brighten the complexion. Regular use of an exfoliating acid toner can lead to smoother, more radiant skin with a reduced appearance of pores, blemishes, and fine lines. However, it's crucial to use these products cautiously, as overuse can potentially cause skin irritation. Therefore, start by using them every other day in your evening skincare routine and then gradually increase the frequency to daily usage, as needed and tolerated.
    The general order of application for a complete skincare routine is:
    Cleanser
    Toner
    Essence
    Serum
    Moisturizer
    Sunscreen (during daytime)

    I just use rose water for basically as many things as possible. Toner, light hydration, on my hair to prevent frizz, you can even add it as a flavoring if you get the right type of extract.

      Hydrating toner, yes. For an exfoliating acid toner, it depends on the formulation and the acids used, such as AHA (like glycolic acid) or BHA (like salicylic acid), and your personal skin tolerance. So, if it's low strength, it can work well, but mid to high strength will become too much at some point.

    I tried using the ordinary glycolic acid toner and glycolic acid toner from Boots pharmacy but they both would cause bumpy skin on my face and neck after one time use. Is this normal that it indicates my skin is ‘ purging ‘ or should i stop? Also the cleanser i use the foaming cleanser from Cerave i have oily skin

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Год назад +1

      Well, it's hard to say after just one use, but it is not uncommon for glycolic acid formulations to have that effect. Personally, I also experience a similar reaction when I use glycolic acid products too frequently. As a result, I generally avoid using them regularly and reserve them for demonstrations. The cleanser you are using is alright, although glycolic acid is typically intended for dry skin, while salicylic acid is often recommended for oily skin.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  11 месяцев назад

      It depends on your overall skin tolerance. If that is the only acid you are using and you do not use any retinol or other strong active ingredients, then it can work. Essentially, you need to find the right frequency for your personal needs.

    • @crissa1760
      @crissa1760 10 месяцев назад

      From what I’ve read, introduce acid gradually to your skin to avoid irritation. Maybe try it 3x a week and at night, and slowly increase the frequency as your skin gets used to the acid. Also, be careful in using AHA/BHA together with retinol since both are acids and could cause some side effects on your skin. Some suggests not to use them together, however if you really want to mix them together, use them at least 30 minutes apart.

    I have a question? I use the ordinary glycolic acid and I want to use the snail mucin essence after it but, I heard that u need to dampen ur skin before applying it so it can work, so should I dampen my skin after using the toner and use the essence or can I apply it on dry skin?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Год назад

      Sadly, that is misinformation, one that even some "doctors" are spreading, leading to a lot of sensitivities or layering issues. Your way of thinking is exactly why it happens. This situation is the perfect example of why damp skin is not the same as wet skin. 😠
      Wet skin: This is skin that has a noticeable layer of water on it. You can see water droplets on the skin surface, and you can feel the water when you touch the skin.
      Damp skin: This refers to skin that has been patted dry on the surface but retains moisture internally. There are no visible water drops on the skin surface. It's similar to a sponge or a piece of clothing that no longer drips water but remains moist to the touch.
      So, you clean your face,
      pat it dry with a towel (this means that it is still damp on the inside, and that is what you want),
      then you apply glycolic acid,
      wait 1-2 minutes,
      apply snail mucin (to lock in the moisture that the skin already has absorbed before).
      So, what I demonstrated in this video is actually damp skin.
      I explained it here in another video:
      "How to Apply Skincare on Damp Skin?"
      ruclips.net/video/xNUUUr81rLE/видео.html
      If you want to apply skincare to dry skin, as sometimes the dampness contributes to irritation when used with exfoliating acids or retinols, you do the following:
      First, clean your face,
      Then, pat it dry with a towel and wait 5-10 minutes,
      Next, apply glycolic acid,
      Wait 1-2 minutes,
      Finally, apply snail mucin.
      Since glycolic acid and snail mucin already contain water, they have everything they need to work properly.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  7 месяцев назад

      It depends on the toner. If it's a hydrating toner, usually there shouldn't be an issue. However, if it's an exfoliant, you need to avoid certain areas of the face, which can become very difficult if you spray it.
