Part 2 - • Homemade aluminum Boat...
Is the greatest boat hull ever made out of aluminum in my opinion was the tracker avalanche in the early and mid 2000s. it was a one piece hull that was hydro formed by Boeing for tracker. if you can get your hands-on 1 of those hulls I feel it's 1 of the best hulls ever made.
I’m watching your video 3 times now. Working on my own boat…
Watch them another couple million times each and let the ads run. Lol. Seriously tho, I hope they are helpful.
Yes siry dude, details are everything, and no doubt it come out looking nice just make dam sure you triple check everything
That’s right
Great video, cool that you bought that material next to the shop I work at!
appreciate it!
great Idea more power to you. Looking forward to see the videos
Appreciate it. Hope you enjoy the process
I have watched a lot of these fo got to say you answer a lot of my questions. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! thanks for watching
Awesome videos! And full of great info! I live in GA and have welded for years, been wanting to build my own boat but have never known how to get the metal. Thanks for all the tips brotha
Glad to help. Let me know if you have any questions. I may be able to help you out along the way with specifics if you need it

Thanks. That means a lot. I saved a few of the drops to use as templates. Maybe one day when I retire I will have enough time to build them regularly and make a jig. lol.
I’m sure it was all you’re amazing help that made day one such a success 😆

how wide was the total sheet before they bent up the sides of the boat?
96"
Day one a huge day Bro. Jack! Looks like a duck boat already. Well done.
Thank you. Just needs a marsh and a migration to start.
Unbelievable! You are the man!
Appreciate it brother. Ready to be in the marsh
So I've got a question, what were the measurements you gave the metal dealer to have them bend your haul? Or is that a secret
ha. no secret. BUT i didnt submit any measurements, just explained to him with general numbers over the phone and described what i wanted the profile and radius to look like and he sent me back a proof. Unfortunately, that guy retired and i dont think the new salesman at that place will do that anymore. i believe they require some formal drawings with measurements. I built another one not long ago and told them i wanted the same profile as this one and he made it happen then too.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms ok. Thank you
Great video, I love the finish product. I’ve been welding for 20 plus years. Been thinking of building my own, verses buying a Seaark Catfish boat. Did you do a price comparison , building verses buying?
absolutely. materials will be cheaper for sure. if you factor in your time though, you will have as much invested as a cookie cutter boat. for example, i could go buy an allweld just as cheap as i built this boat, but it wont be made as well or as custom as i want. [nothing against allwelds, they are great boats] BUT if you take your time, you can have something that is comparable to a prodigy or timber creek... and at a fraction of the cost. so the real savings come where you are willing to go the extra mile. there is a reason that some boats cost 10,000 and others of the similar size cost 40,000. on top of all that, its awesome to put your personal stamp of homemade on a boat... and know every inch of the welds are by YOU. good luck with it!
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms thats what I was thinking. I’ve been looking at some of the Seaark models, my boat would be for fishing. I know I haven’t seen an Alweld that looks remotely as good as your boat. How thick was the sheet for you hull? Thanks for the reply.
@@shannonlocklear8116 1/8 and all of the stringers and tubing was 1/8 as well.
so what exactly did you ask the company when they bent the metal for the hull. I’m looks into building some boats. I have an aluminum welder and have welded for some years. But looking into working for myself some and building boats. Also around what was the price for it?
i told them what profile i wanted on the sides and that i wanted a 56 inch bottom with rounded chines and they sent me a pic for my approval. price will vary based on hull size but they charged a flat fee for bending it. i think it was 500 but that saves a lot of time and welding... well worth it.

What were the specifications for them processing the sheet of aluminum you used for your bottom sheet. I noticed it came pre shaped
No real specifications other than size. I told them I wanted a 1756 with flat bottom, rounded chines, and a side profile similar to a havoc or f4. They come in 8x20 sheets so that’s basically what you have to work with.
What were the dimensions for the template you used to shape the front. I assume if I get the base width and the height end to end I can replicate it. This is the only issue i see myself running into

Could I please get a price on how much the raw aluminum cost ya. I live in Covington Louisiana and I’m really interested in trying this for myself
Mainly interested it that first large piece that was already shaped
@@danielmayfield2195 it will all depend on the size but they charge 500 for the bending of the hull and the rest is dependent on the market cost. Plan on around 6-7k for the metal.
7:44 what kind of machine are you using?
Miller multimatic 215 with 150amp spoolgun

Hello. What is the thickness of the aluminum for the floor in millimeters?
2.54 on the inside floor. 3.175 on the outside hull material.
Hey , Nice Job ! Did the Metal Supplier form/bend the bottom like that for you ? I want to look into building me a boat , I live 20 minutes from Slidell La and would like to look into pricing. Thanks
Thank you. They did. Call pierce aluminum in Broussard. They can get you a quote quick. Very knowledgeable about boat building there as well.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms Thank You !
Hey Jack, what part of Alabama are you from? I’m over by Dothan. I just got an ESAB 235 and a spoolgun. I plan on building one similar to yours once I’m not blowing holes through everything! What’s the thinnest metal you are able to run with your setup? And what hull thickness did you go with? Thanks man.
My hull is 1/8. Easily weldable with a spoolgun. I rebuilt a Jon boat and used 14 gauge to skin in. It welded nice but it wasn’t easy. Had a few blow throughs and if it wasn’t a really tight fit I had to spurt spurt spurt a couple places. So I would say that’s about as thin as I can effectively run. Fresh clean 1/8 is a joy to weld. Looks as good as tig in most places.
Also, I’m over by Andalusia
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms I was blowing holes in 1/4 when I first started trying it out. I’m new to welding all together though. Im gonna start working my way down till I build some confidence and hopefully can lay beads on 14 gauge. I’ll likely have lots of technical questions for you when I get started!
What is the size of your boat length and width across bottom?
Just shy of 18 foot length. 56” at the bottom
Did they break the hull for you at Pierce?
Yes
So I'm looking to build one myself. Would you be able to share the information of the company you got the metal from?
Pierce aluminum in Broussard La.
How much was the aluminum. I want to build me one as soon as I get garage built.
It all depends on the size of the boat you build/size of metal. I don’t really want to say the price, especially since the price fluctuates so much with aluminum. I will say there is no comparison to building vs buying if you are willing to put in the extra effort to make a premium boat. I saved about 75% from what you would pay for the premium boats on the market.
Jack, do you have a material list so I can get a price?

I'm guessing you asked the metal company to bend a whole sheet of aluminum into the bottom of the boat?? Maybe I missed you explaining this?
Yes. I told them the profile I wanted and he bent it. He can cut the sheet before he does it though so you don’t have the whole piece in that shape. In other words, you can have a flat piece of a drop if you don’t want the whole length.
Who did you have bend it?

Did you have trouble with the aluminum trying to warp on you while you were welding the transom or the sides to the rake?
Not much at all. I tried to weld about 6-8 inches at a time and move around. The floor was the worst to try and warp, but even it didn’t warp bad.
@Jack Armstrong thanks.. im about to build a 17'6" scooter boat.. what was you measurement at the top where you 1st started cutting for your Semi -V? If you don't mind me asking
@@kaleblovell5889 I’m guessing you are talking about the width of the v I cut out. It was about 6 inches I believe with a slight radius to 0. 5 ft long. Didn’t cut anything off of the sides as they come in when you bring them together.
@Jack Armstrong awesome man thank you so much
I am building a boat and planning on doing the exact same thing you did to the front with the bottom of the boat.
Can you explain a little more detail the wedge you cut out to give it that point?
I know you went back 5 feet into the aluminum but how wide was the piece you cut out it at the top?
Was it a curve or a straight wedge?
It ended up being about 6 inches at the front. It has a slight curve in the cut, it’s not straight. The easiest way to say it would be to mark your v straight and then get about half way and measure in to the middle of the v about an inch. If you make a continuous curve from the front to back and intersect that mark, it will be about the right curve. I would certainly get a piece of cardboard make a template though. For your template you could do one side of your curve and then fold it down the middle and mark your other side so it’s an exact match. I hope all that makes sense.

Jack, did Pierce Aluminum have that hull shape in Stock as a piece of channel or did you have to ask them to bend it for you?
No I told them the profile I wanted and they bent it for me. I’m not sure they have any stock pieces but they may. I requested this and of coarse there was a fee to bend too. But it was very reasonable.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms how much did it cost to get that made?
@@TTTray13467 they charged me a 500 dollar bending fee. It may be more or less now but it is well worth whatever it is. It saves a ton of time in welding and grinding.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms how much did just the piece cost without the bend
@@TTTray13467 I can’t remember. I have the invoice somewhere but don’t remember off the top of my head. I know it has changed since I bought it as it goes off of weight and current market prices. I’ll see if I can find it or you can call an aluminum supplier and ask what a 8x20 sheet of 1/8 costs
Awesome videos man. I’m building something similar to a gator tail 1750 with a mod v. Are you satisfied with the size V that you cut out? Or would you make any changes if you were to do it again? I noticed it looked like there was a slight dimple where the v meets the flat after you brought the sides up. Also, how is that transom style holding up. I’ll be mounting a gator tail surface drive and this seems to be the same transom design
Nice. The size v is good and another guy borrowed my template and cut his the same and loves it as well. Mine did have a slight dimple but it doesn’t protrude deep enough to hurt anything. The transom is great so far and I think it would be just fine for a shaking mud motor. lol. I wish I could have a mud motor on this one but we can’t where we hunt. Good luck and reach out if you have any questions.
