    My J-wife summed up the UK within a few days of being there on a trip with me. She called it "Tekitou Island", as in "Your train might come, it might not. The shop assistant might serve you, they might not. Your food might come, it might not."

    Ja all my travels to Japan (7 of them) and 3 years of living there had changed me. I am more considerate of others and keep my phone on silent all the time, I have always loved nature but since Japan, I truly love it and spend time in it often. As you mentioned, I only drink water and tea nowadays and I am a big Japanese green tea nerd now 😄

    • @Retro-Japan
      @Retro-Japan  4 месяца назад +3

      A cold green tea really is unbeatable on a hot summers day! Your point about nature there is also interesting, there’s a massive diversity in nature here from the beaches to the mountains across all the seasons. Since moving here my seasonal preferences have definitely changed and I now much prefer the winter over the summer. The summer here just really isn’t my cup of tea 😅

    Nice video buddy! I like the discussion about social awareness, I think there's a clear distinction between western cultures often emphasizing individual thoughts and expressing opinions, while some Asian cultures prioritize group harmony and respecting authority which in the case of some western behaviors is reflected in encountering more individualistic or selfish situations, something I don't like... Though, the problem is not with any of those behaviors but with the fact that society should avoid extremes, an individualistic , selfish society is as bad as a silent and passive society. Finding middle ground, learning from both sides and doing the best to grow as an individual and as a community could create a good environment of respect, empathy, collaboration and progress....
    Thanks for chatting about this stuff! It was good to hear what you think as I can relate to some of your experience, cheers!

    • @Retro-Japan
      @Retro-Japan  4 месяца назад +3

      Excellent points mate. I was resistant to the whole “lack of individuality” at first, and while as foreigners we are very lucky in the sense we can to enjoy both in some way, the society as a whole is far less divided of the group mentality. Will see you in the next video 😉

    If my math is correct we are the same age but you have a 5 year head start living in Japan compared to me. I already associate with much of what you said, regular Onsen/sauna sessions, reverse culture shock coming back to France, change in taste.
    I am actually sitting in a train in Paris that’s stuck in the station, they announced we “might” leave Paris 2 hours late. I hope it’s only 2 hours and not more. But hey this allowed me to watch this cool video of yours, so it’s not all bad!

    if you don't mind, i'd like to press more into the mixed identity topic you brought up since you didn't dive deeper in it for this video
    can you give me more examples of the "struggling to fit back in" issue? maybe you had family members or friends observe change in behavior?

    • @Retro-Japan
      @Retro-Japan  4 месяца назад +3

      It’s a good question. Honestly it’s very hard to put into words. Whenever I go back home to visit, the things people talk about and do and the way people view the world is from a particular viewpoint. If you’ve lived abroad I think it really opens your mind a lot and you see the world through a different lens as you spend more and more time observing different cultural norms. The things that are important to people in one country might not be important in another. In a country as different as Japan, I think the effect is more pronounced. It is very difficult to put down into writing though as it’s more of a “feeling” as opposed to an objective change. The person I am before I left my own country is vastly different from the person I am today though

    • @javinxo
      @javinxo 4 месяца назад +3

      @@Retro-Japan thank you for taking the time to reply :)
      i guess it is a weird question to answer. living in a vastly differentiated culture can present those very obvious differences but also show up in very subtle nuanced ways, so much so it results in you struggling to describe it other than "a feeling."
      personally, i want to have my particular viewpoint challenged. it's pretty much why i even have the desire to live abroad, where ever it may be. i cannot imagine i would ever learn much about my self from being isolated in my particular environment. it's like that saying, "you don't know what you don't know" right?
      i guess maybe it's my turn to discover what that "feeling" is like, lol

    This is a very positive video in general and I see myself in a lot of the things you have described - taking better care of my appearance, being more aware to avoid controversial topics, etc.
    But that thing about the teacher playing the British national anthem is just pure cringe. I despise the degree to which they have no concept of a foreigner's personal identity as something different from the identity put forth by the country's marketing division. And since they're so ill-educated in geography & foreign culture in general, this is the sort of thing where I'd imagine them going from talking about how great イギリス is to someone from Ireland, or greeting a Ukrainian in Russian.
    I keep more sane by not expecting much of intercultural sensitivity in this country and truly finding joy when someone does seem to know more about the world or where I'm from.
