Thanks for stopping by as always mate. One thing I forgot to ask was “how much do you think your experience helped you in getting a job?” Because honestly my guess would be not that much. Speaking from experience, once you land an interview, the hiring managers don’t really care much about your resume, all that matters is how you perform in the interview. Max was probably the only person I knew that worked that that actually had a lot of experience in IT prior.
When I worked with Max at AWS, he converted from contractor to full time not because of his experience, but because he was a team player, was hard working and would always go out of his way to help others. He had no data center experience before joining, as is the same with most. It’s like most jobs, you learn how to do it after joining not before.

@@Retro-Japan I hope so! I have a few data center technician interviews lined up, including one with a big company, so I'm hoping doing well in the interview will get me the job despite my lack of experience. Currently bricking it and hoping I don't miss up the interviews 😂

@@zenakuTenshi that’s awesome news mate and sounds like you’re making some serious progress. Make sure you read up on data center infrastructure (what is a DC, basic concepts like power and cooling), basic hardware stuff (components inside a server, what is a server, how is it different from a regular computer etc) Also be prepared to answer why you want to work in a data center. I’d also prepare some examples from your past experiences on how you have shown various characteristics and gone through challenging situations (disagreements at work with peers, a time you failed etc)

When it comes to data center work in Japan though, it’s not like software development where experience is a hard requirement in most cases. companies such as AWS are actually looking for people with little to no experience that they can just train up. The main obstacle they actually face is finding English speakers that can show they actually have a genuine interest in cloud infrastructure.
The industry is relatively new in Japan right now so this may or may not change over time, but the industry is also growing very quickly so perhaps it won’t become oversaturated any time soon.
Either way, while Maxi here is someone that did have some experience (albeit not DC related), I could give a handful more examples of those in the exact same position as him that didn’t have any experience. I think potentially it woulda been better if I cut that out as it’s not relevant to his journey and he likely could have pulled it off without the experience - wanted to keep it genuine though.

Thanks for watching! Maxi didn’t have any data center experience but he had some other IT experience, however it’s very possible without such experience. I don’t think it will end anytime soon, it’ll likely increase if anything at least over the next few years. Japan has always been an interesting place but with the current state of the economy and the currency it’s more accessible in combination with that backlog of trips that probably got cancelled by Covid.

Yeah, you're right, unfortunately. Whenever I go to Tokyo for biz trip, the sight is both sad and hilarious at the same time. Over-tourism and immigration destroyed the city vibe beyond repair. Even the locals are starting to complain and now they are tasting the buyer remorse. It was a terrible mistake to welcome large influx of tourists and residents they didn't need. Personally, I moved to a prefecture isolated from above degeneracy, which still look like Japan of the early 90-2000.The best decision I made. I even purchased a land big enough in case these fcks decide to invade the place, so I dont have them in sight. No going to happen during my lifetime but still.
For the time being, The Japan hipsters can keep the Okubo park.:P

Sorry you feel that way buddy. The purpose of the interview was just to discuss his personal experiences moving to Japan to show a different perspective of how people end up here. There are plenty of people who ended up in the same positions and jobs (including myself) without having the 10 years of experience and Max likely would have ended up at the same place without the experience. He’s dedicated, curious and a hard worker and those are far more valuable than experience.
This was just one persons experience and isn’t definitive of the path everyone must take
