You continue to impress with this series! Such an abundance of information and useful knowledge, while being wildly entertaining and thought-provoking. I salute you sir! Can't wait for the next one!!
Thanks! Ah that's because I filmed these a year ago and currently I've taken some time off to begin the year 😅 but it still takes me a week to edit these lol
Your videos are my mantra. I'm a comic book artist since 15 years (10 in the independent field). I feel like a fresh air seeing your content and every time I share it with friends and family to watch it and understand what we love to do. Thank you! I salute you from México.
The quality of these videos... its like those premium DVD documentaries you could occassionally find at your local book store in the early 2000s. And it has the very same rewatch-ability. I find myself coming back to these every few days. Suddenly, I find myself conflicted.... at the same time this channel needs and deserves to have more views and on the other hand, I also enjoy the privilege of being part of the lucky few to witness such astonishing work in the making. Your videos are about Art- but you made Art out of making your videos. Thank you Francis. I wish you all the best, and I'll be staying here a while. Edit: I have to mention your amazing choice of music! What a treat.
Hey thanks so much! These kinds comments really help motivate me to keep making these! As much as I'd love for more ppl to see these vids, I genuinely really enjoy making them. So I'm glad it resonates with those who do see them.
This video was so helpful Francis, thank you! This topic has been a real challenge for me since the beginning of my journey as an artist. It’s something that especially has been the source of my challenges with efficiency in being able to complete things as well. At times I use so much reference it becomes exhausting and I lose steam to finish something. So seeing how you handle it in more of a free way is very refreshing. I’m Definitely going to adopt this into my process, thank you! Btw your figures have so much life and gesture to them🙌🏼
Yeah I find looking for references time consuming and slows me down. It's better to grow your understanding. But ironically you can only grow it through drawing references lol but that's what life drawing and observational drawings are for. I want to freedom to just draw and not be hindered by references and it's limitations.
Lovely episode, just great. I feel like that answers my comment from another vid about using reference material! Still, would love to see your life drawing studies or reportage drawing! Thanks for the insights Francis.
Thanks! Sadly it's been many years since I've done life or observational drawing. I would like to get back into it as I feel my mental image bank is starting to feel limited.
@@FrancisManapulArt I actually used to go quite regularly, and it did help. In the beginning I was stuck in chalk and charcoal mode because when I was younger that's how I thought life drawing was supposed to be done, but in later years, and when I went back to Uni to do a Master's degree, I relaxed and started using brush pens, watercolours and even did a drawing or two on my iPad during class. It was quite freeing and brought my life studies closer to the work I do with my comics. I saw the benefits greatly. Since then I've had a family as well so time to get to life class is also something I struggle with! Nowadays I will sit in a cafe and draw cartoons of the waiters or people having a drink. It's fun but as you say it's limiting - unless you like reading comics where all the characters are sitting down drinking coffee!! Still, keep up the good work!
Love these videos! I was having trouble this morning with a reference, it was different from my storyboard, I made I new reference, closer to my first intention and it worked! And it's exactly what you explain here, sometimes refs can really block and frustrate.
Totally! When it comes to figure work, I find searching for reference frustrating and more time consuming than to just make things up. Mostly its some angles that give me trouble so its easier to just to take one for myself.
Thanks! The laptop I use is the Surface Book Studio, and the large one connected to my desktop is the wacom 27qhd. In the past I've also used the Huion Camvas 21". For beginners I would consider budget and the level of use. The most budget friendly are the Huion tablets, while not up to the wacom standard it is surprisingly punching above its weight class considering its price.

Thanks so much! These have become a real creative outlet for me so I'm happy to hear this!
Love these. Thanks for continuing to provide your insights.
My pleasure!
I love your Videos. I can't believe how you keep up with the deadlines and creating these content on youtube.

Hi Francis, Im a huge fan of CLEAR I was wondering what drawing tablet you would recommend for beginners.

@@FrancisManapulArt Thank You!
Amazing video! Can’t wait for Clear #1!
What is that tablet you were using near the end?
Thanks! It's the surface studio laptop.
