Insights on Comicbook Art & Storytelling | Orlando Mega Con
In this fly on the wall style video, I take you through our experience at Orlando Mega Con. I also capture an impromptu casual conversation about art and storytelling with my fellow Ghost Machine artists and writers. We work so differently to achieve the same goal of telling a story so it was such a pleasure to hear each others process.

To make this video I used a Fuji XH2s and XT3 with the XF 16-55mm f2.8 and the TTArtisans 25mm f1.8 manual for both video and stills. I also used my phone (Samsung s23). For audio I used the Rode mic NTG.

Youre an inspiration for me bro. Fespite these being sped up, I feel like I'm learning more from them compared to those step by step tutorials being posted here on YT. Quality stuff right here. I aim to get to a point of polish with my work just like yours. :)
Please do more videos! I miss them :)
From inkpulp 🎉
Welcome!
Wouldn't having a deviantart account be enough as a valid portfolio too?
Sure. Yeah online portfolios work as well. It's all about the content of the portfolio and if it fits the context of the job you want.
really good video. Question, do you have to draw on comic book templates, say like from Image Comics, like I am doing right now with my own work? I am a future comic book artist who is also writing his first comic book series and also drawing it.
You don't have to draw on the template, but you have to keep the proportions of a comic book page.
@@FrancisManapulArt oh thank you. What is the proportion?
Do you have this in a much slower version? I was trying to keep up with layers and coloring but you were zooming through it If you do that would be great
Not at the moment but I'll keep this in mind for next time.
you're 44-45? damn I thought 20s. lol
Yeah, I've been around the block a few times 😆
I don't mean to be mean, but I just don't get it. What's the point of starting a new company just to do the same thing everyone else is doing? Does the world really need a bunch of more forgettable superheroes?
I get it. Typically, in the creator owned space, depending on your publishing deal, you own either a part or in whole the property you create. However, our structure is drastically unique in that we own all the characters and the company collectively. I don't just own what I create I own a part of everything we create. We fail and succeed together. As for the characters all we can do is try to make them as memorable as we can as we try to do with all our work. We all love comics and we've kinda done it all so why not try something new to keep things fresh for ourselves, and hopefully for others.
@@FrancisManapulArt Thanks for the answer. That's pretty much what I expected to hear when I clicked on the video, sort of the raison d'être for this company.
Mabuhay from the US! Appreciate your comic art as well as your doc film art. Ingat!
Salamat, pare!
Jack Kirby worked from home. That's all you need to know. He drew like 4 or 5 titles AT THE SAME TIME when he was at DC.
Jack stands heads above us all. Absolute Legend.
This Is awesome
Thanks!
Wow Wow Wow, Do your thing thank you for coming to Fan Expo Denver!!
Our pleasure! We had great time in Denver!
i am a comic artist, currently working on a pay graphic novel and i put your videos as a company while i produce. I see myself reflected in you and i get inspiration too. Greetings from argentina. The World bicampeon.
Appreciate it! Best of luck with your work!
Just get to it man
😀 sorry I like to take my time 😀
That tip about leaving a little for tomorrow to start off with a clear path is great! 👍
I'm not ready for this Clear run to be over. Can you make a video on it's success, perhaps interview the writer to reflect on the magic you two have created and the lessons learned?✨
Can you do a quick video on the dimensions you work in for a comic page and how do you export it, i.e., do you export a layered photoshop file for colorists, etc.?
This video has a quick recap of my final art dimensions. ruclips.net/video/ScYMsgoGlwU/видео.htmlsi=qVk_b1FoaLgNvRDV If I draw digitally, yes they get layers. If traditional it's a flat layer. Hope that helps.
@@FrancisManapulArt Thanks, Mr. Manapul. Do you still have the DC file templates available? Just a suggestion, but you should do aspiring comic book artist Portfolio Critiques for viewers. I've noticed those type of videos are popular. By the way, Clear is cool.
I just read Geiger, I enjoyed it. But can you please create and maintain a reference in your website for the reading order as new issues come out? I’m trying to catch up but it’s difficult. I wish all comic book companies did this
Ah good idea. I'll let the team know. Thanks for reading our books!
I love your cartoons bizarro Superman
as you real comic artist, i was trying to find a answer that was from a professional like you, WHAT IS THE SYTEM REQUIREMENT(like ram cpu etc.) FOR COMIC ART AND DOES GRAPHIC TABLET AND MONITOR NEED TO BE OF SAME RESOLUTION? please waiting for months for this answers.
Most modern computers in the last 5 years should be more than capable to run either photoshop or clip studio. The screens don't have to be the same resolution.
@@FrancisManapulArt thanks and if you can will you recomend? and also please name some professional comic colorist yt channel that work for dc/marvel? and i some time ago mistake you for just youtuber that your videoes were very 🤗good
oh i came across this video randomly but as it happens you're the guy who did "The Necromancer" comic that i picked up the first 3 issues in a pile at my comic shop... Neat <3
Yup, that was me.
i have a real question. what if you want to self publish your own work and you already got a team just need more drawing assistance how would i go about it,
I'm not fully sure I understand, but I guess if you need an assistant of quality level you'd have to hire and pay them. Searching on social media you should find a lot of talented young artists.
Brah this stranger things music is giving me flashbacks. lol Love your series so far. Thanks for making them. <3
Much appreciated!
can i do a professional comics art in an ipad ?
Sure. A lot of artists do.
I myself am practicing using a tablet+laptop combo. I need to learn more photoshop. I am just so used to doing things on SAI.
Amazing art, amazing colors and amazing tips. Thanks, and keep the good work!
I've heard some artists say that page rates across the industry have stagnated over the past 30 years. Is this your experience? Are some publishers better at keeping up with inflation than others?
Speaking only from my experience my rate bumped up with every contract extensions. But it is my understanding that starting rates unfortunately have remained relatively the same.
That "screwdriver" is a drill my friend
Lol 😆 my bad
That's a nice Johnny Bravo hair style. There are a few comic book artists i seen with the Johnny Bravo,
Loved that show!
Hello sir name of the inking brush ?
Most likely one of the kyle Webster ink brushes in his inkbox pack.
Good luck guys for waht I have seen there is nothing for me yet but its always good people doing something they own.
Do your thing, keep doing your thing until you're good enough for people to pay for it.
Your videos are underrated!
Thanks so much! I suppose better underrated than overrated lol
That’s crazy we must’ve just passed each other, I stayed in the hotel near that park with the restaurants near the Ferris wheel.
Ah! I was only in that particular area that night.
Wow, awesome, so interesting thank you!
Thanks as always, Joe!
Reminds me of Casey’s videos! Love it!
Hey thanks! That's very generous of you to say!
Thank you, Francis!
Great video of n the topic. Do you think currently it is possible to be a comic artist while financially supporting your family?
From my perspective absolutely. That said it will be tougher in the indy route rather than the mainstream route. Both have its pros and cons. I've made what I think is a good living from this for over 20 years and have a family of four. So yes it's definitely possible.
Thanks for this Francis! Very helpful. I seize up a lot while creating and have essentially hindered myself for a long time. I'm gonna try Bryan's approach and see what happens.
Yeah its a great approach. Just create. Don't worry about the end result just enjoy the act of doing. The results improve over time.
Love seeing Con reports because it takes me there virtually at least. Particularly interesting from the artist's perspective. As a writer I've always taken this "unique approach to storytelling": I think all the time and never draw at all.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it was neat to see all the different approaches each of us take.
🙏 nice!
Bryan hitch is amazing with the way he explained his process, that was crazy insightful
He's a genius.
