- We visited York's Rowntree Caravan and Motorhome Club Site and visited the city. We saw some amazing places but got possibly the worst service we could get at a very posh hotel.

A proper actual "posh" hotel would never treat you like that. A hotel trying to be posh, that thinks it's the best, will always treat you like that.
Hi thanks for watching
@@OlafProt I totally agree. A real posh hotel treats everyone like a Lord or Lady
Can confirm.
@@7thDaughter one of the things now, is that people run hotels with degrees in hospitality, and a desire to be all over Instagram or TikTok or whatever etc, and sadly, that doesn't mean you have a natural aptitude for looking after the general public, with its every whim and foible, with firmness but good grace and care. There aren't many true hoteliers left anymore, I know a couple and they're dedicated to the job. Like impossibly dedicated. And both of them started as lounge waiters or similar. Customer service can't be learned in many ways, you either can do it, or not. I spent a few joyous years in my early 20s working in a 3-star hotel in south Devon, the manager was one of those bosses you never forget (this is near 30 years ago) and he had the gift. As a result people kept thinking we were a 5-star hotel. Because of the service we offered. Friendly, respectful, relaxed, discreet. As a result the gusts almost always mirrored the staff and there were very few horrors 😂 It was the best time.
Anyway. I'm generalising horribly.
@@OlafProt You're right, it's something that comes naturally. It's being able to put the customer 1st and give them the best experience you can. It takes a certain level of maturity to be able to do that and today it's all about the brand and feelings and not about customer satisfaction. Today was a hard one with this "posh" hotel. It's a good idea to ask staff as you enter if a table is free and let them direct you to a clean table rather than sit at a dirty table and wait to be served. If it's a busy pub at lunch time then yes, grab your table but you also need to inform someone you're there, don't assume it's table service.
I’ve always taught my children to treat everyone in the same way because you never know who you’re talking to. My father in law had a good friend who was, at the time, one of the wealthiest men on Jersey in the channel islands; he didn’t drive a flash car and rarely flew first class because he always said “ it arrives at the same time”.
Hi 👋 Thank you for watching our video.
This is all very true of course.
Wishing you a great Monday 👍
@@Jane-rc2rk It would be nice if our children were taught to treat everyone the same because everyone deserved to be treated kindly, but in this world where wealth and status are so greatly desired I think that might be a lost cause.
Probably one of the reasons he was one of the wealthiest people on Jersey was because he didn’t waste his money on flash cars and 1st class flights. Old school generation. I had an uncle who to look at you would have thought had little money by the way he lived. Not the case at all. 🙂
You were so right to walk out. There's no excuse for terrible service or rather lack of service!
Hi 👋 Thanks for watching
@@Stchristopherofatlantis do you think they were short staffed? I cant see how they could possibly miss you from where you were sat. There needs to be a full enquiry over this debacle, either that or they need to get an electronic means of communication.
I had a nice meal at Tennants while i was waiting to buy something, its a while ago admittedly, you ordered what you wanted at the counter and paid, then they gave you a flag with the order number to put on the table ( which you obviously organise before you order)You sat down and about five minutes later they brought a cuppa to you and in about another five minutes the meal. I couldn’t believe how quick they were, and the staff were busy. They got a ten out of ten from me on this occasion.
It’s clearly not like with like i admit with your experience but it seems that there is room for improvement. I admire your tenacity waiting as long as you did without any initial acknowledgement, ie, “i will be with you in a moment madam/sir.”
@TheGrimReaper1 hi. We did go over to them to say we were waiting and they were dismissive of us, so we just left. The hotel and gardens were beautiful, such a shame 😳
My husband and I have been to Claridges in London for breakfast twice and they treated us exactly the same as everybody else even though we looked a little 'alternative'. That place that ignored you is not a truly posh place because if they were you would have been treated with respect.
Hello. I bet Claridges breakfast is beautiful. So delighted to read this
@@Stchristopherofatlantis You two need to go there sometime for it because the food is insanely good and their orange juice is actually freshly squeezed. LOL
Sounds delicious 👌 We would love it
My hubby and myself live 82 miles away from York and often treat ourselves to a night there. It’s safe to say we DEFINITELY will never be staying in the Grays Hotel 😡
Hi. Thanks for watching our video
Have a great evening 👍
@@Stchristopherofatlantis no problem. You too 👍🏼
Fair play, you’ve got much more patience than me, 10 mins of waiting and being ignored would have me standing up and shouting to the waiter “ EXCUSE ME, AS YOU OBVIOUSLY DON’T WANT MY CUSTOM AND HAVE IGNORED ME FOR THE PAST 10 MINS, I AM LEAVING” making sure everyone in the vicinity heard. Then I would follow up with an email to establishment management.
Hi. Thanks for watching 👍👍🤣
How very classy of you 🥺😏
Don't be so ridiculous, just walk over and have a quiet word, sometimes staff just get it wrong without any intention to ignore customers and sitting there for so long getting all het up about it is just stupid.
@@jacqueline8559 He probably has a neck tattoo and a polo shirt.
The other customers would be glad you went.
I do love York but you should definitely get in touch with Grays Court to complain - poor service should never be rewarded by being ignored. An apology is in order, it’s not even as though there are not many equally fine establishments in York. I can tell you, having been there before, that this place is absolutely nothing so extra special that it should treat customers like that - especially given that it clearly wasn’t just one member of staff having an off day. I’ll personally be avoiding it like the plague on any future visits after what happened to you, so I thank you for letting us know (and you can quote me on that when you contact them, if you so wish.)
Thanks funny no reply to you guys they can't except bad comments but they can give them 🫢
Hi Liam, what do you mean?
Hi. Thanks for watching 👍
It was such a shame as the sun was out and the location right on the walls was fabulous
@@Liam-tj1ic ???
@Stchristopherofatlantis Definitely 😉 like I said you can't take criticism says on your reply.
I was raised to treat everyone the same. In fact I was told if on the first date he treats waiting staff badly to ditch him!
Hi, this is the best way to be, we agree
Next time you get ignored like that,
Just click your fingers and shout waiter ! waiter!
I do it and they don't like it much and the wife doesn't like it either,
especially when I'm at home 😂
Have you been speaking to Andy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Knew a waitress who got sacked. Some loud guy kept clicking his fingers at her while she was serving on a busy night. She eventually got to him and said
[ it takes more than two fingers to make me come ] and walked off😂
@@calvbutler5894 clicking your fingers or shouting at waiters is a gross behaviour. just wave them or walk up if you need urgent attention..
I work in hospitality and that was a disgrace. Lovely surroundings but shocking staff
Stunning location ❤️
I would never queue for Betty's. But for tourists it's ok. The staff watch over you to rush you along to get the next person in the queue in. Always go to The Ivy. We go for every occasion. They're always polite and the food is amazing. And you are NEVER rushed.
This sounds fabulous. Thanks for this 👍
I always go to Betty's in York although since covid the menu is much shorter. They used to do a pear and parsnip soup - wonderful. But all these tourists having 'afternoon tea' in the morning are a real nuisance especially when they are getting the waitresses to take lots and lots of photos of them eating a macaron. Much better to ask for a seat downstairs.
Shouldn't laugh, but that is funny......although extremely annoying
I agree about those not using headphones. My Dad loved playing his music loud in 70s, and we were thrilled when he got a stereo with headphones. It's in the 70s, I went to York and still looks amazing but £17 for a cheese and pickle sandwich I will live vicariously through both of you. Thank you for sharing this. 👍👵🇬🇧
Hi 👋 your message made us smile
Thanks so much for watching 👍👍
No excuse for bad service, I would definitely make a complaint.
Hi 👋 thanks for watching
Cannot believe nobody even came to clear the table , very bad service .
It wasn’t too busy either. Bit of a shame
You didn’t miss much. The food is awful we had smoked salmon, terrible.
Oh noooo!
It's not known for good food. You escaped lightly , to be honest. There are many, many better places to eat in York
@@Stchristopherofatlantis You were better off not being served. The food is expensive and rubbish. Many better places to eat

Hello 👋 thanks for watching
Sorry you had that experience. In 2013 BBC4 did a documentary about the owners "Hotel Folly - Follie au Deux". The woman in particular does not come across as a nice person at all. She ran a long running war of attrition against the lovely, mostly volunteer, staff of the Treasurer s House, even down to deliberately blocking their cars in and a number of other 'tactics designed to annoy'. They are not posh, they just have delusions that they are better than they are. Please don't let some knobheads put you off coming back to York
Hi. Thank you so much for this. We will watch this. We genuinely thought it was just us, when we went to the hatch to ask for service they were rude so we just left.
Such a beautiful location
Have a great evening 👍👍👍
@Heather-jd1km She's a right piece of work. The hotel only got 1 star on "Scores on the Doors" last year, and she went bleating to the local paper about it. Probably she would have been better doing some staff training.

I've had the same experience at Betty's in York, fourty-five minutes we waited and never got served. I would never go back again.
What a shame. Expensive cuppa tea 🤣🤣
@@Stchristopherofatlantis What I didn't say this happened thirty-five/ fourty years ago, yes, I hold a grudge.

Betty's there and in Harrogate has always been very snobbish. Remembering right back to the 1960s. Not truly high class in my estimation

Ah! Good old York. York is a very special place for me as I went to university there. Love visiting whenever I can, as there is so much to see and do. For anyone interested in trains I would recommend the National Railway Museum, next to the railway station, but there is something for everyone in York. I can't wait to visit again. Thanks for posting this lovely video.
York is beautiful and we lived our visit
We will return 👍👍
Very interesting video.
I shall certainly be avoiding that hotel when I’m in York. Who do they think they are? They don’t look that special?
I’ve travelled a lot, stayed in some dives as well as some of the best hotels in the world and have always been treated with respect.
That kind of “up their own backside” behaviour makes me mad!
Hi. Thanks for watching 👍 have a great evening
If it's any consolation, that hotel only scored 1 for hygiene and cleanliness last year. It was upgraded on appeal but still.....
Nooo way?!?! Really!! That’s terrible
It’s mainly a wedding venue, been a few times and not very memorable 😅
We so enjoyed this video of your time in York. I was born and raised in York (1967). Caesers Restaurant used to belong to my mother's family, Bowman's Butchers. The abbetoir was behind the shop in Bedern (the snicket beside the shop in Goodramgate). My Grandad Bowman and his brothers ran the shop for many years before it was sadly sold. If you ask the current owners of the Restaurant, they know about the history of the butchers shop. My mum would help to run errands delivering meat during the war on her bicycle. One day she dropped a packet of highly prized sausages from her bicycle basket onto the road and a bus came along and ran over the sausages!! She was in bad books!! Fabulous videos and we really enjoy them all. Thanks for great content and sharing your experiences. Sarah and Win Rogers x
Hi Sarah and Win
Love to hear this story and hope others see this comment. York is beautiful and you are lucky to have grown up there ❤️
Thank you for watching our video 👍☀️
We lived in York and loved it. It's a truly beautiful City. The history is wonderful. I loved to visit all these old Churches and sit in peace. Some have amazing medieval statues , candelabras and pews. Its a shame the more modern shops have been built around so many beautiful gems. Keep your eyes peeled for them, in small side streets. NO, Betty's is NOT "JUST A CUP OF TEA" Guy Fawkes WAS born in York, He was Christened in St Michaels Church, a beautiful Church right next to the Minster. He was imprisoned ,and hanged ,in York Prison ( which still exists within the Castle Museum and is well worth a visit.) The Jorvik Centre is a travel back ,through the rebuild of the ACTUAL Viking village, that was found during excavations under the Street. It's amazing with houses where they actually were excavated. Sights, sounds, smells bring the Vikings back to life. You need , at least, a good 3 days to do a visit to York justice . And you will miss out on most of the sights,:- The Minster, The walls, The Jorvik Viking Centre, The Railway museum , The Castle Museum, (which would take a day alone to visit) The Treasurers House, Fairfax House, Cliffords Tower, if you take dogs. There's not much point going, in fact !!
Hi, We agree there is so much to do in York that a short weekend just isn’t enough time. There’s loads more we wanted to see and ran out of time 🙃
Thanks for watching
Thank you. That’s fascinating. Are there any memorials there for the Great War soldiers?
I’d have gone to him and explained politely how long you’d being waiting and that others seemed to have being served before you even though they seemed to have arrived after you. They would have had to tell me to my face why they weren’t prepared to serve me and why! Then I’d have asked to see the manager.
Hi 👋 thanks for watching 👍

The first time I stayed at the Savoy I thought the staff would treat me like that. I was so wrong. The staff were warm and welcoming. That is the sign of a really good hotel.
Hi. Thanks so much for watching. Savoy sounds fab 👍
Disgraceful, I’d never treat customers like that
It wasn’t a great experience 🤔
Hey Andy and Clair! Just wanted to say your York vlog was absolutely brilliant! You two had me laughing out loud with your humor while also packing in so many cool facts. It was fantastic seeing all those amazing locations around the city-felt like I was exploring right alongside you. But that hotel garden scene? Oh my gosh, I was cringing and laughing at the same time! I can’t believe you were forgotten and then practically held hostage by the garden furniture! You turned a horrendous situation into comedy gold. Keep up the great work! 🍺🍺🦴🦴
Hi Tony,
Thanks for watching and laughing out loud 👍👍👍 We loved York, so much to see and do and we will definitely return to York as we missed out loads and just ran out of time. We send you both our best wishes xx

I haven't seen the "posh place" incident yet; I'm only eight minutes into the video. But what an amazing place this city is. So beautiful, everywhere. I'm just glued to this. I'm regretting now, that I didn't take more trips to other parts of England in my youth. At 80, we're not going anywhere. I left England on a boat when I was going on 11. The costs of travel were huge in those days. Once you left you didn't go back. I went back once in 1976 just so my Mum could have a last look. My son must go. I'll tell him. He had an English accent when he was little and he'd never seen England in his life. He loved the Queen and he particularly likes King Charles. Wonderful place, you're visiting. My Dad was from Yorkshire so I wonder if I'm being drawn in, genetically? You never know.

@@markbowman7240 I lived and worked in York. One of my colleagues, usually a sane, calm, rational girl insisted she'd seen the Soldiers marching through. She was very freaked out🤣 The original roads are lower, obviously, and have been built upon several times over the Centuries. As you enter the Jorvik Viking Centre, you will see a wall that's been excavated. It demonstrates the different levels of road, that will have existed during different Historical times. (the archaeological teams obviously know how to decipher this) It always makes me wonder what they'd find, from Viking times, under the opposite Marks and Spencer . Had they demolished THAT, I'd have been quids in 😂

Love York and enjoyed your vid immensely. About 20 years ago, we inadvertently walked the whole length of the walls with a very distinctive Collie x Saluki dog before seeing the ‘no dogs’ sign when we came off. It was heaving up there and no one said anything, not even a tut or disapproving glance.

We went to the Ivy a couple of weeks ago. They have a special menu that's about £20 each for 2 courses. Really good food and great service. Cheaper than we expected
Sound good to me 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Always queues outside Bettys , both in York and Harrogate . Try Bettys in Harlow Carr Gardens just outside Harrogate , a little less busy . Loved seeing York again , My husband comes from there and I am a Leeds girl .
Hi 👋 We loooove Leeds
Thanks for watching 👍👍👍
What a shame….stayed there twice… it’s a lovely hotel. We were there two weeks ago. Chatted with the staff and owner while having a nightcap. No excuse to make you feel the way you did.
Hi. Glad you had a great experience, beautiful location
Really loved your tour round York, Thank you
Thank you for watching
It comes down to badly trained staff if they don't acknowledge you
Yes we do agree 👍👍
Fabulous vlog. Must put York on my bucket list when I visit UK.
100% yes 👍👍
a brilliant tour and video of york ..makes you proud of being from yorshire seeing all that history so close by
We are proud Yorkshire men and women too ❤️👍
Loved your tour of York. We live in Harrogate which is about 20 miles from York. York is such a lovely city. Didn't know there was 365 pubs in York 😮. Keep up the good work guys.
Not quite enough pubs for Andy 🤣🤣👍
Happened to me and the wife at a certain beach front hotel in Cornwall horrendous left early life lesson learned
When we did ask we were not listened to so just left. A shame
I don't know if it makes me posh but I wouldn't want a camera in my face whilst I'm undertaking some demeaning job to support my education.
Hi, thanks for watching
I agree ., happens too often !
@@Flozman1982 Get real, that's all part of being a student.
There is nothing demeaning about waiting tables. I have never done it, but I have always had great respect for anyone earning their own money. I enjoy engaging with table staff. As a retired professional, I may be viewed as 'posh', which, incidentally I detest, but a true 'gentle person' does not consider class, status or occupation and treats everyone as they would wish to be treated
Really enjoyed this 💖
Thank you ❤️☀️
Brilliant video! We’re booked into Rowntree later in the year.
You will love it, location is excellent 👍 Enjoy
Loved the extra length video ! ❤
Hi 👋 hope you guys are well
A Fact for clair. The unusual name Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate is from old English Whitnourwhatnourgate which meant Whit Nor What Street which could mean " Nothing At All " or " Neither one thing nor the other " if you look at the plaque at the side of the street , it reads " What A Street " .Hubby and I shouting at the t.v go the other way 😂 for the street sign. Have a great weekend
Love this 👍👍 thanks for watching ❤️
“If you need a Krep you can have one” 😂 - You should try standup Andrew! But it’s a brutal gig.
🤣🤣🤣 don’t give him any more ideas 🤣🤣🤣
We all know real wealth does not need to broadcast it. This was not a posh hotel but a pretentious one.
Hi. Thanks for watching 👍
I'm aware that I'll probably have to hide behind the sofa after saying this, but I really like Wetherspoon.
You pay when you order on the app.
You don't have to worry about being ignored, or trying to work out what a fair tip is at the end of it, or try and get the attention of someone so you can pay the bill.
Claire here and I love Wetherspoons , esp the curry and pint meal deal
I have the App 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching
@@Stchristopherofatlantis we love the brekkie.
As a side note, we accidentally walked our dog halfway round York's walls and nobody said a dickie bird. Good old British reserve.
Nice video by the way. Great fun, thank you.
👍👍👍🐾
The way i look at it is that the money you saved will keep you in fish and chips ( and mushy peas if you are feeling flush) for weeks.😊
Agreed 😂😂👍👍👍
We were in York last week love it go regular always something to see or do.Bad experience in Grays court awful service.Cross keys is good ate there, pies are great .
Hi. Thanks for watching our video. We love pies. Have a great day
The fire was on t’other side. Do you remember the Blue Peter contest to design the new ceiling “bosses”? I always look for them when I’m back home.
Hi, Absolutely loved Blue Peter, watched religiously and wanted a badge.
How have you only got 13k subs? I love you guys and my sister now subscribing :) keep these coming
Hi. Thanks for this. RUclips is making us work hard but we love it

Thank you great to hear this. Hope you use the tips and make memories 👍
I would have called the waiter over
Hi thanks for watching
I live in York disgusting service from the hotel, never judge a book. Saying where were you sat
just stinks, i wonder if King Charles was sat there he would of gotten the same service.
🤣🤣 👑 🥂
Shocking service, very informative video. Grays Court Hotel. Glad I know to avoid the place. Other than that, great video, York looks mostly a very nice place.
Hello. York is fab 👍 Thanks for watching
Thanks again guys for another fabulous tour, another place that we've not been to but will now, as for the ignorant waitors obviously they don't recognise motorhome royalty lol. Looking forward to more travels with you.❤
Hi 👋 how are you?
Definitely recommend York to you if you like history and quaint cafes 👍👍👍
@Stchristopherofatlantis yes me and my wife like old quirky shops and beautiful churches, can't vouch for my lads though...keep up the good work
Yes agree regarding the motor home service point took us a while to sus it out, But we enjoyed York and the campsite
It was really good seeing your experience and acknowledge O we been there ha. We were there late June this year.
Hi. Thanks for watching. We can’t wait to return 👍☀️
Used the Hotel numerous times, excellent staff, cannot be faulted
Great to hear this
Love Grays court but I think you need to let them know you're there.
@isherwoody Thank you for watching. It’s a shame we didn’t see them at their best
Laughed at how long it took to find whip-ma- gate need google maps Guys lol. Shame about Grays Hotel as a resident of the City and having been there a few times it was unacceptable to wait that long and not get served. I know you had your dogs with you so can’t get onto the walls, there is a gate in the garden at Grays that you can get up on to the walls for those who might be visiting without a pooch.
Hi 👋 you are lucky to live somewhere so beautiful 🤩
What goes around comes around. Justice will always be served ... eventually.
Thanks for watching 👍
I need to go axe throwing I’ve got enough axes 🤣 we where shouting at the screen telling you to go the other way to see the Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate sign 🤣 love going to York :D
We were wondering around for ages like Benny Hill
@@Stchristopherofatlantis excuse me while i re edit this to Andy chasing you at triple speed to the Benny hill theme 🤣🤣 you might have the best music on RUclips by the way! We’re loving it :3
We stayed at a posh7 star hotel in Milan where the man at reception always behaved as if he was on the wrong side of the desk 😂
Ooooooo Milan sound fabulous
@@Stchristopherofatlantis oh it was - the Duomo was amazing - went crazy exploring it💜
My lovely - its Ginnel not Jinnel - with a hard "G" as in Gate, thoughts lovely to see the area through fresh appreciative eyes!
🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍 thanks for watching
