    I was in a profession for 15 years before the pandemic, and went back to school last year with the goal of becoming a dental hygenist. I just took the HSRT entrance exam, and submit my application this week when the score is posted. The more videos I find on YT, the more excited I get about being a DH.

    Im a career hygienist of 20 years, I was an assistant for 4 years prior. Im not a negative Nancy at all. I am a realist and I unlike a lot of people speak the real truth about the profession. When I first became a dental hygienist dentistry was very different most offices were private practices but now everything is moving towards corporate run offices which has changed everything about dental hygiene. First of all people don’t realize that the average working lifespan of a dental hygienist is seven years most people don’t make it near as long as I have due to neck, back, shoulder or other problems. I did not know this when I became a hygienist. When I got into hygiene there was prestige and respect for the profession but that has changed not even for hygienists , but for dentists as well. Corporate run offices are about one thing , seeing as many people as you can , as fast as you can. This takes a huge toll on your body not to mention the fun right out of the profession. Now dentists and hygienists are treated like sweatshop workers rather than professionals in a medical field.The other problem is the benefits in a private office are almost nonexistent things like health insurance you won’t find in most private practices and if you are in a corporate practice you may have these but not at a very high-level , you’re going to pay through the nose for health insurance and other things. I have been very lucky and been in the profession at the right time but I would not recommend it to anyone now and this is NOT SOUR GRAPES, just reality.

      Thank you for commenting! I've been in this profession for 15 years and feel good considering, no chronic pain. Im also very careful, good posture, and have only worked part time. Now I have my own mobile practice which can be seen as harder on the body but I manage my schedule well and am not over worked :). Pacing in this profession is the way to go!

    I loved working as a Dental Hygienst and my patients loved me. That's how I knew I made the right choice. It is TRUE that it is a dog eat dog world when it comes to the competetive nature of other hygienists (just being honest). In those Dental Hygiene groups, I would avoid such people. I was also a temp hygienist too. 😊. I am gearing out of the clinical practice and going into the non clinical practice in education or dental sales because of ergonomic issues. I too would like to avoid the office politics that you were talking about. 👍❤️

    I'm 27 years old & been out of school for a while, I've been juggling with what i want to do for the future a while now & my fear has been you don't know anything about the field until you're already in it, and idk anyone in any field really to talk to about this. Essentially my questions are...
    1. How many years does it require, & what do those years entail? Will i have time to work during school?
    2. How did you find out "dental hygiene" was what you wanted to do?
    3. How much is the pay generally?
    4. What are some things to be aware of on the journey?

      You want it more than anything, what are you willing to do to make your dream a reality? Nothing will never hold you back unless you let it! Hope this helps :)

    Hello. First of all. Hats off to a wonderfully shooted video. Currently I am taking a break from school due to personal issues after I finished my pre-nursing courses. Just like you, I am concerned about the processes and the emotional parts of going thorough nursing school and being a nurse. Compared to Nursing, do you think Dental hygiene is better if a person is looking for a good work life balance and money wise? Because I have noticed the salary of nursing and D.H are almost equal yet I feel like Nursing requires way more sacrifice of the worker's life for saving people . Incidently, do you think DH will be replaced my AI or any type of tech development in the future?

    • @katydid5088
      @katydid5088 Год назад

      Dental Hygiene varies by office. Not a Hygienist, but things I've witnessed having had to receive "Medicaid" (Poor people care) in the U.S versus a regular employer or independently purchased insurance ar leagues apart. Government facilities have massive turn over, poorly patients who are either anxious, extremely uneducated and are finally getting teeth pulled after leaving things for too long, or are too poor to receive anything classed as restorative Dentistry. If the state office has to decide between covering a Root Canal with crown versus a pulled tooth, they will pull the tooth. (In most states, barring certain medical conditions where they get something billed as a medical expense in hospital, root canals aren't covered.)
      Expect your patient experience and the general staff attrition rate across all departments to reflect that. I.e High turn over, stress, very meaningful work with half decent pay, but also a vast array of experience levels and personalities that may or may not be surly or underprepared. (I had an old old dentist who was solely responsible for a foundation in Dental phobia.) Long story short, he did a deep cleaning with no anesthetic because I "was a sugar loving brat that didn't care for my teeth" , when in reality, I was a foster kid who would go days between regular meals, eat whatever my "mother" would steal or pick up with food stamps, or packaged cake when she wasn't strung out on drugs and looking to cure her munchies. After getting into foster care I had most of my teeth pulled and no one taught me how to brush my teeth until I was in my 20's. The Foster parents took us to appointments because it was mandatory but actually teaching any useful life skills or self care was impossible with the amount of chaos in the average "Foster Home." Ditto for most of the Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants I ran across as a little kid.
      Offices paid by regular insurance can afford better equipment, staffing ratios, and trained clinicians, as state care simply wants a Dentist with a pulse in the seat. Personalities may clash but once you find a good Dental Office, it's worth while to stick with it. Likewise, the emotional problems if you go into an office that is not state care will be better for your mental health. It's also, though, a harder place to get a foot in the door if you have poor interview skills or work references. I would advise working at least part time (2 days a week) instead of going for the full student experience on loans or scholarship if you are just coming out of High School. Interviewing is a skill and it might take a few tries to figure out what they want/ how you need to change a resume/ask for references.
      The high turn over rate and patient load guarantees you will have a job in a State Health Care Clinic but it won't be for your own peace of mind at the end of the day. I worked Billing, accounts receiving, and administrative assistance in a Public Health facility starting out because they offered to pay back my student loans (the salary was also lower than what I would have gotten had I gone directly into a firm). Health insurance was half decent, the 401k was good, and the dental premiums covered going to an office that was not a Medicaid facility and that was all I wanted right out of college. After a few years I worked temp to full time positions in different business roles that were much much easier to deal with, as just like the staffing side of things, the administrative turn over for public healthcare is high due to the lack of good wages.

Before that I did route sales but being 38 and with 2 very young kids I'm not to sure I want to be gone that much. I want a career where I can make a good living. I'm more into trade and not going to school for 4 or more years. This looks like it could be something I could do and like. James Thompson I’m in my early thirties and just completed hygiene school recently. There were a few classmates in my class that were a little over my age and even in their forties with families and kids. In a short span of 2 months, I’ve gotten 4 interviews and 3 offers. The job market is great for hygienist at the moment with a lot of advancement. And yes starting where I live is about 60k and max at 90k! Just depending on where and who you work for. You can also temp, and it pays a lot more, $40+/hr as I’ve heard. Not a single regret in this field. Definitely hard and lots of sacrifices but worth it at the end!!

    the hygienists that say hygiene is not a good profession, arent always negative 'nancy's'...... many hygienists truly want to do their job right and put their patients first, but they are hindered and chastised by most 'conveyor belt' dental offices. i love working with patients, and making a difference in their lives/health, but it is upsetting and discouraging that MOST dental offices only care about the money. Hygienists are pressured into meeting quotas, by selling and rushing through as many patients as possible during the workday etc; i can understand why this would leave a sour taste in hygienist's mouths regarding the profession. Bottom line, hygienists hands are tied.

    Hi!
    I enjoyed watching your video
    Thank you for sharing ur experiences.
    I am starting dental hygiene program this year in ontario.
    I am actually concerned that what if job market is not in high demand by the time I finish the program?
    Do you think that job market for dental hygienist is positive after 3 to 4 years later?
    You already mention offices need dental hygienist.. But video was 4 years ago.
    And I am wondeing job market has been changed since..
    I really hope that all effort and time I devote for this career would pay off.
    Because becoming dental assitantant is shorter and easier compared to dental hygienist.. But I chose to become a dental hygienist (spend more time.. Money.. Effort..)
    I am not a canadian so I am more concerned that my job opportunity would be limited... 😭 Any advice would be great.. Thanks!

      I’m in the SAME boat. I’ve attneded an orientation for a in residence school and they said to don’t have a job but I don’t have that option because I’m a single mother. I HAVE to work sooooat this point I’m looking into doing online school and on hands I’ll have to go in and do. So I think just try and do your best research for a good school. Best of luck ❤️

    I’m currently a pharmacy technician in CA however I’ve been wanting to get into a dental hygiene program for some time now. It seems that I always get negative feedback though. Some counselors have told me they’ve spoken with people who have previously been hygienists & end up going back to school because of the lack of variety in the profession. Also I’ve heard depending on the state you’ve graduated from, not all states will except your license.. Is this true?? Part of me still feels I want to be a hygienist but not if I can’t work globally or at least all throughout the US..

    • @dentalelle
      @dentalelle  Год назад

      I feel if you wanna to do it go right ahead! In the states, you do have to take a state exam after your dental hygiene program but that allows you to work in the states. Let’s say you moved to Canada, will have to take another exam, but that’s very typical for a lot of professions, it’s entirely worth it! If this is what you want to do :)

    I haven't taken the best care of my teeth because I've been very broke, no insurance... im doing more to take care of my teeth now but definitely need work done. Anyway....my question is...how much during school are you in each other's mouths practicing? I'm self conscious. I still really want to do this but I just want to know how much embarassment I'm in for during school. Lol

    how to become a dental hygienist?

    • @dentalelle
      @dentalelle  6 лет назад +2

      You need to take dental hygiene in a program either college or university :)

    • @bumblebee_bae
      @bumblebee_bae 4 года назад

      You take prerequisite classes, such as Anatomy, Chem, Microbiology. You would need to look into the program, you specifically want to apply to and they can let you know which prerequisites you need to complete and the GPA you need, before you can apply to the program.

    Do u yourself have to have perfect teeth to wanna do this career ? Are you at a higher risk for diseases since u work in the mouth or is it fine as long as you’re doing the safety procedures? Would u recommend this career ? I’m very interested I’ve never wanted to do nursing but I feel I would like this career path, Makeup and Hair is my first passion but I want to have a great and secure backup also .

      You don't have to have perfect teeth. Just be careful and wear proper ppe. If you want benefits and retirement plan don't do it.
