Alistair Begg: Is the Exclusivity of Christ Unjust?

  • One atheistic website raises the question: "Did the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust go to hell?" The obvious implication of such a challenge is that it is unjust to say that those who die as a result of gross injustice and aren’t Christian will not be saved. In this lecture, Dr. Alistair Begg explains what the Bible teaches about the exclusivity of Christ and answers the emotionally provocative challenges raised by inclusivists and pluralists.

Love this man. Here, in my own life in 2022 I try to keep in mind a few things.
    1. Non-coercion is deeply Christian - as Bob Marley put it, "Every man has a right to decide his own destiny.". Or as another artist (this time a Christian), Lenny Kravitz put it, "It's your life.". Everyone gets to decide for themselves about this truth and about how they will live their life but no one will be unaccountable for their decision or their life. The exclusivity of truth was defended by Jesus Christ but simultaneously the decision of others was never a source of anxiety (or a cause for coercion) on the part of Jesus. Let him who has ears hear. He was resolute but untroubled. Yet even when he was troubled, mourning the cities that killed the prophets he never felt responsible to convince the unconvincable. In John 6, I think, after the crowds begin to leave him there is some risk that his disciples will abandon him also but the only play he makes to keep them is to simply ask, Will you then leave me too? It's shocking. God appeals perhaps to our free will but he doesn't violate it.
    2. Only The Frailest forms of Love and Respect Require 'Sameness' - one reason for this 'sameness of religions' claim is to preserve respect or even love across our differences by rendering these potential sources of conflict as non-differences. We are, we are meant to believe, essentially (that mischievous word) the same. Can I love and respect my Muslim friend without erasing the substantive differences in belief between us? I can, but it will require a stronger love and a more robust respect than can be manufactured by needing to imagine that I am essentially looking in the mirror.
A shortcut is to see him as a person and not (just) 'A Muslim'. Lou Reed has a song where he says something like, "I'd miss you if you disappeared into the divine.". God sees us as persons and we are all his sheep, his children and his flock with respect to creation - God is Adam's Father, the Father of creation. It sounds like pernicious doctrine but I love the universal paternity of God and find it unproblematic so long as I distinguish it from God, Father of Israel and God, Father of the twice-born. There's something about all of us belonging to God (by right) - like the widows lost coin - if not yet found - that is compelling to me. The coin he already owns (though lost to Him) , the sheep that is already of his flock (which He pursues) , and the son who is already his own son (who shall become His son in full).
I would miss Allister if he disappeared into the divine and I thank God that there is no doctrine so compelling that it was meant to erase or supplant human personality. I love this man. It's his incredulous story about Mrs. Jenkins and his not giving a flying rat's tail where he really picks up, (personality-wise) steam. Yet is this also, through personality, the place where the Spirit really begins to intrude? Judgment begins with the house of God and we are obligated to upset, not just ideas beyond our borders but to overturn the money changer's tables inside the very house of God...
OH my goodness! "I've got to go plug my tail up a tree." I'm laughing so hard. You're seriously the best.

If only he could prove it! As it is...
If only our Creator will prove His existence! So what is truth? That would entirely depend on what your definition of truth is! What is truth? The truth is/are the facts correctly interpreted. As there are indeed facts, then there must also be truth. The key is to interpret those facts correctly!
The problem that I have as a believer is that even though I do truly believe that there is a God, and I do truly believe in the true existence of our Heavenly Father even Jehovah God (Yahweh Elohim Allah), I cannot prove it. Even though both the prophet Moses Levi (1593 B.C. - 1473 B.C.) and the apostle Paul (Saul Benjamin) (3 - 67) believe that you can prove the existence of the invisible God through His visible creations, many people believe that you cannot prove the existence of the Supernatural through the existence of the natural:
    Genesis 1: 1 - 31 (1)
    Exodus 33: 1 - 23 (12 - 23)
    Exodus 34: 1 - 35 (1 - 28)
    Romans 1: 1 - 32 (18 - 32, 18 - 21)
    1 Timothy 6: 1 - 21 (11 - 21, 11 - 16, 13 - 16)
    Hebrews 11: 1 - 40 (1 - 3)
    JST Genesis 1: 1 - 33 (3)
    JST Exodus 33: 1 - 23 (12 - 23)
    JST Exodus 34: 1 - 35 (1 - 28)
    LDS PoGP Moses 2: 1 - 31 (1)
    JST Romans 1: 1 - 32 (18 - 32, 20 - 21)
    JST 1 Timothy 6: 1 - 21 (11 - 21, 11 - 16, 13 - 16)
    JST Hebrews 11: 1 - 40 (1 - 3)
If only our God would give us a great sign to prove His existence as he did for the prophet Elijah (950 B.C. - 840 B.C.):
    1 Kings 18: 1 - 46 (16 - 46, 16 - 40)
    JST 1 Kings 18: 1 - 46 (16 - 46, 16 - 40)
Jesus Christ Judah (8 B.C. - 33 A.D.) was once asked "What is truth?"
    John 18: 1 - 40 (28 - 40, 37 - 39)
    JST John 18: 1 - 40 (28 - 40, 37 - 39)
The truth is the facts correctly interpreted, and you cannot have any truth without any facts. Non-believers do not mock us for believing in the ultimate existence of God, but we are mocked for being ultimately unable to prove His existence! I would agree with this point, as my father (Michael Thomas MacGregor Sears (1945 - 2003)) had also argued that only some Supernatural entity (like a God) (from another dimension existing outside of time and space and beyond our fourth (4th dimension of width, breadth (height), length, and time) could create something out of nothing. I agreed with him, which is how I came to believe in the existence of our Heavenly Father Jehovah God (Yahweh Elohim Allah)!
For only the Supernatural (the invisible) could create the natural (the visible) as both the prophet Moses Levi (1593 B.C. - 1473 B.C.) had argued (Genesis 1: 1 - 31 (1), Exodus 33: 12 - 23, Exodus 34: 1 - 35 (1 - 28), JST Genesis 1: 1 - 33 (3), LDS PoGP Moses 2: 1 - 31 (1)), and the apostle Paul (Saul Benjamin) (3 - 67) had argued (Romans 1: 18 - 32 (20), Hebrews 11: 1 - 40 (1 - 3)). What some say is possibly so! Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955) felt that the weight of the universe was constant (and unchanging) (E = mc2) and that energy can become matter which can become energy. Maybe this is "the Force" that the Star Wars folks are talking about!
    Genesis 1: 1 - 31 (1)
    Exodus 33: 1 - 23 (12 - 23)
    Exodus 34: 1 - 35 (1 - 28)
    Romans 1: 1 - 32 (18 - 32, 20 - 21)
    Hebrews 11: 1 - 40 (1 - 3)
    JST Genesis 1: 1 - 33 (3)
    JST Exodus 33: 1 - 23 (12 - 23)
    JST Exodus 34: 1 - 35 (1 - 28)
    JST Romans 1: 1 - 32 (18 - 32, 20 - 21)
    JST Hebrews 11: 1 - 40 (1 - 3)
    LDS PoGP Moses 2: 1 - 31 (1)
AND YET, I cannot prove this for according to the first fundamental law of physics, one cannot create something out of nothing, NOR can one turn something into nothing! The first law of thermodynamics tells us that the total energy in the universe, or in any isolated part of it, remains constant. In other words, energy (or its mass equivalent) is not now being created or destroyed; it simply changes form. Countless experiments have verified this.
A corollary of the first law is that natural processes cannot create energy. Therefore, energy must have been created in the past by some agency or power outside and independent of the natural universe. Furthermore, if natural processes cannot produce mass and energy (the inorganic portion of the universe) then it is even less likely that natural processes can produce the much more complex organic (or living) portion of the universe.
The first law of thermodynamics is a version of the law of conservation of energy, adapted for thermodynamic systems. The law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system is constant; energy can be transformed from one form to another, but can be neither created nor destroyed.
    LDS PoGP Abraham 4: 1 - 31 (1)
    LDS PoGP Abraham 5: 1 - 21
An atheist Christopher Eric Hitchens (1949 - 2011) said it best when he said that if one is going to base their eternal lives on an invisible Supernatural entity, then that invisible Supernatural entity ought to do a lot more to prove His natural visible existence! The problem is this: How can we know the mysteries of God, if God simply chooses NOT TO EVEN BOTHER to prove His own true existence?
Anything unreal does NOT exist! In order for something to be real, then that something MUST have a physicality to it (a physical being be it energy (spirit) or matter (material) or both)! If our Heavenly Father Jehovah God (Yahweh Elohim Allah) is indeed real, then He must have a physicality to him (a physical quality, a physical dimension, physical characteristics in either energy (spirit) or matter (material) or both)!
Anything unreal does not exist! Can't He be both body and spirit (matter and energy)? Cannot our Heavenly Father Jehovah God (Yahweh Elohim Allah) be both matter and spirit?
    John 4: 1 - 54 (1 - 26, 21 - 24, 24)
    JST John 4: 1 - 56 (1 - 28, 23 - 26, 26)
    LDS D&C 129: 1 - 9 (1 - 3) LDS D&C 130: 1 - 23 (22 - 23) LDS D&C 131: 1 - 8 (7 - 8)
JST John 4: 26 - For unto such hath God promised his Spirit. And they who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.
Christopher Eric Hitchens (1949 - 2011) once asked the great question with regards to the afterlife: "Can there be spiritual-psychological consciousness without a material brain?"
We now know that emotions are caused by electrochemical processes in the brain, and experiments have demonstrated that certain chemicals can induce fear, depression, euphoria, a sense of well being, sadness...etcetera.
This is both fascinating and terrifying at the same time, for is this all we really are? Are we missing something here or are we simply discovering what makes us, us?
The scary part for me is this: If there is no spiritual-psychological consciousness without a material brain, then there is no actual spirituality within us that goes on after death. The idea is that a spirit (or a soul) combines with a body to create a soul (or a living being). I really don't know. When folks claim to see ghosts, are these ghosts the actual spirits of people whose bodies have already died? Many Christians claim that spirits (or ghosts) actually exist amongst us, but is that really true? Are ghost stories real or are they just figments of our imagination?

My friend, may I suggest that if you are struggling with finding empirical proof of God's existence that you begin to study the Bible in relation to a topic we might call, "Spiritual perception". Find phrases about opened eyes and blind eyes. Find phrases like, "...for they will see God.". Find other (spiritual) senses in verses like, 'Taste' and see that the Lord is good. One person who replied mentioned the wonderful verse, We walk by faith not by sight, but in Hebrews 11 Abraham is said to have persisted in his faith as one who 'sees' Him who is unseen. He sees by faith but not with the physical eyes embedded in his physical skull.
Maybe you can help yourself by taking an interest (through simple childlike faith and sincere prayer) in how the Bible teaches that God Himself may be "apprehended". This is a different empericism that relies on the senses a dead man does not have and could never acknowledge as legitimate but we who have been raised from the dead sing together, [I] 'was blind but now I see' . Faith is the seeing that doesn't rely on physical sight. As Tozer put it, this is not the distinction between the real and the imaginary but between the physical and the spiritual. Sometimes we see as in a mirror darkly but we truly apprehend!
Do not make a dead man your eye doctor: he has no eyes to certify your spiritual sight and the insults that fall in you fill up what was lacking in Christ's suffering.
