  • Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire are some of the most beloved Pokemon games ever. They began a new era for the franchise, and brought about a lot of new features and innovations. However, the games also have a lot of obscure secrets and Easter eggs in them that have come about over time, and in this video I will be highlighting some of these unusual and interesting things that have come out of the third generation of Pokemon!

That without mentioning the fact that you are paying the price of a full game (without counting the DLC's) for an unfinished product (sw/sh) when there are games (in the Switch) that not only cost way less but also have 2 full games for that price.

Bro, were you even alive in 2003? It was a wildly unpopular decision when the games were released. Further, to compare Dexit to RSE is ridiculous as, unlike gen 8, the games had all of the Pokemon coded into them and, even the Pokemon you could not catch in the base game, had completely overhauled artwork and animations.

I must have been in the minority then, because as a young teen I didn't really care about it all that much, I was just excited about all the new Pokemon I would get to catch and use, just like I've felt every gen. Hell, my first Sword playthrough I didn't use a single non-Galar Pokemon, I didn't even use the Galar forms. As far as I've seen, the only ones really complaining about the lack of national dex were the competitive players, because they couldn't bring their fully trained teams over. But I think it was for the best, because it got some fresh Pokemon into the meta and made people change things up.

lot of people seem to forget that. there has never been a time where they decided not to focus on the full dex without backlash. it happened with 3 and 5 before 8, and theyre not even the same situation because the mons were still available in the data. obviously the average player is not going to hack unobtainable pokemon in the game but there is still a difference between focus on a new dex with a remake or additional game with the rest of the roster vs an official shaving of the pokedex with no option to use the unobtainable mons unless youre paying for home + holding out that maybe the mons you like will be available the next gen in 3 years.
sword and shield also dont have the same problems gen 3 and 5 had.

You still couldn't trade your old Pokemon over, which is the main reason people were upset about the dex cut, something they've been considering since gen 5 btw.
As for Let's Go, those were officially announced as main series games regardless of how "obviously spinoffs" they were. You could perhaps consider them to Pokemon what 2D Mario is to the Mario series, as they're both the more casual friendly entries.

    • @metleon
      @metleon 4 года назад +12

@@ZombieBarioth Yeah not being able to transfer the Pokemon was a problem, but SwSh kind of have the opposite problem where we have the means to transfer Pokemon (Home) but they're not programmed into the game.
And I do remember not liking how you couldn't transfer Pokemon back then, but I do see now that it was for the best to get rid of everything about a Pokemon being determined by its DV's. I don't see anything good coming out of Dexit other than a possibly more balanced metagame, which they seem to be screwing up by including every legendary in the DLC.

11:00 I don't think what happened on Gen 3 can be compared with the dexit fiasco of sw/sh for two main reasons.
    1) The data was still there on the Gen 3 games (you have to buy a DLC on gen 8 because the data is not even on the base games) so they never cut anything at all (if anything the only "cut content" was the e-reader room but I don't remember if people actually complained about that back then).
    2) It was due to technical limitations in the sense that the way the "genetics" were coded changed drastically. Besides, their excuse to cut over 60% on the dex on gen 8 was because "they would work on the models and animations" for the new 'mons that were to be included in the game (which mind you, was less than those available in Gen 1) but it was later discovered that not only they used the same exact models but also reclycled animation rigs for both pokemon and NPC's while leaving some of the most mediocre attack animations there (not counting the poor attack animations during dmax). Double kick anyone?
And that's why "nobody complained on Gen 3". If you want to argue that forcing players to buy the full set of games is similar to the current DLC situation then you must remember that since the data was already there in the base games you could just get an AR or any pokemon generating tool and that would solve your problem in an instant.
PS: Forgot about the obvious hardware limitations that also contributed to the factor of Gen 2~3 compatibility but if anything that's even worse for gen 8 since they don't even have those issues as an excuse to cut content from the games.

I think you’re forgetting the backlash gen 3 had back then. The inability to transfer was a deal breaker for A LOT of fans. many dropped out of Pokémon as a result. Might be the origin of the “genwunners.”

    • @AzureKyle
      @AzureKyle 4 года назад +13

No, the origin of genwunners came from the time of gen 2. A good majority of the kids who were 10 when gen 1 released (the game's target audience) fell out of Pokemon because it was no longer 'cool', around the release of gen 2. And a lot of kids would pick on the people who remained fans of Pokemon, myself included, calling us babies for still liking baby stuff. It's those people that ended up becoming genwunners, once they saw how popular it was becoming again, but taken aback by how much it had changed over the years, only having played the originals. Getting overwhelmed by the number of Pokemon they had gotten up to, when they were just used to the 151, and wanting to go back to the glory days of nostalgia, when they were younger and things were simpler.

I think the reason people didn’t make such an uproar about not being able to transfer GBC Pokémon to GBA cartridges is because they internet wasn’t as prevalent back then and there wasn’t really anywhere for people to voice their frustration. Also the Pokémon’s codings were in the game, so even though they weren’t obtainable in game it was still possible to get them. I actually got every single Pokémon in Emerald back when completing a Pokédex actually meant something. Problem with Gen 3 was totally different than what happened with Sw/Sh.
With gen 3, it was technical limitations at the time that didn't allow transfer, but the all the data for the Pokemon were available(sprites, moves, cries, shinies, etc.)
With Sw/Sh this wasn't the case at all, trying to make new games yearly is a big flaw, and their excuse that they had to remake all the models from scratch was proven to be a lie as most of the returning Pokemons' models were similar or exactly the same as models from gen 6 & 7. Even Gen 3 has all the data for the previous Pkm, but Gen 8 did not; even some moves were excluded.
    Recap:
Gen 3: Gamefreak couldn't figure out a program for a transfer process from GB(C)/Gen 1/2 to GBA/Gen3 at the time.
Gen 8: Sw/Sh was rushed for GF's yearly quota and had lied to fans for the reason why Pokemon were excluded.
    Two totally different scenarios.

SO if you want them, have to cheat, or pay. Some even saying it was "obviously" a reboot to the series and it pissed off fans as bad if not worse than Gen V doing another take on that. But at least with Unova, we'd faced this before and knew had the ability to trade up from Gen IV so... -shrug-

I got all my friends into years later when I gushed about the plot and showed off my team at sleepovers. I even was on a fandom RP community not long before the remakes came out and there was some discussion in the group all "Archie is from Pokemon. I think he was like a gym leader or something?" Gen 3 had a HUGE backlash back in the day. It wasn't until later when people finally calmed down that they finally realized how fun the game was. The real issue was that gen 1 & 2 were set up under a completely different system, the biggest point being finally splitting the special stat into a special defense and special offense stat. This among a few other issues meant that there was no reasonable way to transfer the older ones into the new one without either creating severely overpowered Pokemon by letting the players keep the trained up stats on both sections, or severely crippling ones that had training time put into it. The whole reason the remakes were released was for the specific reason of finally letting people complete the pokedex again.

You're dead wrong about the comparison between 3G and 8G but many other comments already explained. So I'll just sum up the History of "Pokemon cuts".
1G and 2G : You can catch them all, but you need to trade with others in order to get version exclusives (and Starters and Legendaries).
3G : You can't catch all 386 Pokemons in one game, but all of them do exist in-game. Besides, the Hoenn Dex is a mix of Pokemons from all generations, there's the 130 or so new creatures along with 150 from previous gens. Then, FRLG and Emerald completed the collection by bringing the hundreds or so that didn't make the cut to this generation. In the end, all Pokemons are available through all games of this generation. There _was_ an outrage, and the sales actually suffered from it, but the fact is all Pokemons do exist in every game of this generation.
5G : Again, you can't catch all Pokemons, but they still exist in the codes. However the Unova Dex is comprised of ONLY the 151 new Pokemons. None of the 493 others are obtainable in BW (except maybe in the postgame? I don't remember). That caused a huge outrage too, but Game Freak fixed that with BW2, where the Dex is a mix between all generations.
8G : A huge chunk of the previous Pokemons don't exist at all. They aren't coded, and that's the point of the "Dexit" : Game Freak wants to deliver higher quality, and they can't do that if they have to program all 900 Pokemons every single time. The problem, of course, is SwSh are low quality games even despite the Dex cut. However, New Pokemon Snap and Legends proved their point: with a limited number of Pokemon, they can deliver something better. It doesn't change the fact that the outrage is deserved though, especially since they did bring back a few hundreds of creatures *and locked them behind a paywall.*
Yes, the History of Pokemon is filled with dark times, lol. But looking back at it, it's funny how each situation is unique, like the response of Game Freak for every crisis. In the case of 3G, they had clearly planned that all Pokemons would be split between the games. In the case of 5G, I feel like they tried to reboot the franchise by erasing all existing Pokemons, but chickened out after the outrage and decided to add back a lot of them in the sequel (that said, since the older gen creatures were already programmed in the first game, I'm probably wrong). As for 8G, they handled the situation very poorly. The easy solution would be to make temporary National cut: they release the games with half of the Dex, and progressively add the others. That would still mean using resources to work on all of the 1000 Pokemons, but that would make the job easier for them.
I'm personally not against the Dex cut, as long as we still get at least 400 creatures in the main games. Legends had only 250, and although I loved this game, I want more than that for SV and the following ones.

Yes, you can't transfer Pokémon from Gen1+2 to Gen3, but unlike SwSh, every Pokémon that existed so far was coded in the games, at least. Thanks to FrLg and Emerald, you can transfer them into Ruby and Sapphire and you can use them.
And, if I remember correctly, GameFreak revealed just last year that they won't include every Pokémon in future games, even if they'd be tradable. There is the biggest difference of both situations.
Personally, I defended GameFreak's decisions a lot of times over the last decade (I even defended UsUm when people got mad at the games, because I think they are what SuMo always had to be, which made SuMo more unnecessary games imo, and I really love UsUm, as well as X&Y/OrAs and BW/B2W2. All of these games are the most enjoyable games, right after the Gen3 games) but for the first time ever, I didn't feel great with playing SwSh because of so many issues, starting with animations & graphics (if there were pixel textures or not enough space for animating moving Pokémon on a DS or 3DS game, I wouldn't mind that because of the system-capacity, but c'mon it's the Switch SwSh take place. A console, you almost have to pay twice as much as the 3DS console + 3DS game).
Another things are the story (which began slowly, bits by bits, but got rushed at the end, right before you're about to become the champion), the handholding/dialogs which lead you to nowhere (annoying things no one needs), the Galar-region itself (which is just a corridor run, since you HAVE TO go to and see every single place before you complete the main-story, with nothing left to explore on your own) and to take away the options of previous games (to turn the EXP-share on and off, to choose another path as usual without any NPC blocking your way and tell you what you need to do first or to do some trainer-rematches on various routes without removing things like the VS.-Seeker entirely)

    • @Mqstodon
      @Mqstodon 4 года назад

    • @Gagafreak92

@@Mqstodon Let's imagine that your favorite Pokémon would be the Kanto starters, the legendary birds, the legendary beasts, Togepi/Togetic, one of the Nidoran-lines or Dragonite (which are available in FireRed/LeafGreen) for example. You're still able to play them in Ruby/Sapphire via trading, which makes the games feel complete because you're free to choose how you want to play the most recent region.
Most of my favorite Pokémon are Aggron, Camerupt, Sharpedo, Tropius, Metagross, Salamence, Groudon, Luxray, Dialga and Giratina. And even if they'll be available in Sinnoh-remakes, they're not playable in Galar, because they're not coded in these games. So it feels empty, shallow and incomplete to play Sword/Shield.
It wouldn't be that much of a problem, if it'd be the only issue. But besides the animation or some graphical aspects (which I don't care about), the story is almost nothing at the beginning and rushed at the end. And the region is only a large corridor, where you have to visit and explore every single location within the main-story, with nothing left to explore on your own.
But the good thing is that Sword/Shield were able to make me love the previous region Alola even more. Because there are places you're free to explore optional and at least, there is a post-game area and every single Pokémon is playable.
Since Pokémon is the only franchise I use to play, it's also the only reason I bought a Switch. But the only GOOD reason for getting a switch so far is the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Remake. So at least it wasn't completely a waste of money and time.

    2) General audiences were younger and in an age without readily accessible internet and social media to the scope we have today. So controversy didn’t spread as quickly or as fervently.

That may not necessarily be the case. In order to fix the dead battery issue, you must also start a new save file. Though it wouldn’t hurt to get the berry glitch fixed anyway

Well it's possible to trade Pokemon from gen1 and gen 2 it's just complicated and requires some perchases depending on if it's a card or rom. The main reason you can't trade Pokemon in my opinion is how EVs work in those games, when following the steps to transfer your rom Pokemon to gen 3 the EVs are over the maximum 720 and would cause Pokemon to be overpowered since it's higher than normal.

I don’t understand who is telling you that no one was upset about the issue of transferring Pokémon in Ruby and Sapphire. People were pissed. I’m not even that old of a fan and I remember people used to talk about it all the time. Even online. Just cause it wasn’t as “loud” doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I wouldn’t make such bold assumptions without having spoken to fans who were around back then or look up old message boards and stuff. It DID rustle feathers.

And the people that didnt complain probably were still trusting gamefreak. Dont make guesses as to what happenend back then.

Gen 8 is SO much worse than Gen 3. Gen 8 is like if Gen 3 made it to where you can't transfer the Pokemon up, but they also completely stripped out the Pokemon that you couldn't transfer. (Which is EXACTLY what they did.)

Sorry, but rse and sw/sh are two totally different scenarios. Rse they still took the time to code in all past mon, even if for all they knew, we’d never get a legit way to obtain them (which is true for some mythical s for the game)
Sw/sh despite this being the easiest to trade up from the past in Pokémon history, cut over half the dex, then lied in their explanation...

In regards of the berry glitch, if you have 2 game boy advances a link cable and the e-reader, you can scan a specific e-reader card that inserts the necessary data to fix the aforementioned glitch.

I kept saying how this gen wasn't even the first time that previous pokemon weren't available, gen 2 fans were royally screwed in gen 3.
Gen 5 also started without any previous pokemon, but you could transfer them so that doesn't count.

  • @Threads_Of_Fate

I don't know a single people who played both Gen 2 and Gen 3 who didn't complain about the inability to trade between them.
The fan base was not happy, and I remember a lot of my friends citing it as the reason they quit Pokémon at the time.
IDK why you seem to think that people didn't complain. Maybe because it largely predates the wide adoption of the internet and hence it presence on the internet is fairly small?

The woeful understatement of the switch from Gen 2 to Gen 3 without the ability to transfer pokemon between the two is so criminal I'd warrant a do-over for this video. (I lived through the mass disappointment of that shit at the time...)
And like someone else in the comment section mentioned, comparing Gen 3's situation with Gen 8 is apples to oranges.
