that's what i meant by less structurally sound, i'm sure alternatively you could sew the majority of the pocket to the outside to make it more structurally sound, just wondering why the leaving the pockets on option was not considered.
I suppose if you wanted the look but with the functionality of actual pockets, you could just get appropriately flesh toned fabric (or even clear vinyl) and replace the back of the pocket rather than ripping it all out. Actually I really like the idea of clear vinyl - it's still a 'sexy' cutout, but it retains the functionality of the pocket, as well as adding a neat textural element. Even if it'd be sweat city, and there'd still be the problem of appropriate underwear.
I hope the pockets found a new and loving home! Also I bought two cute patterns recently and I'm so excited to try them out :D with... mum's help of course because I still can't understand what on earth patterns talk about haha!

You should check the video of Vintage Boat People! (It's called "DIY cut-out shorts" I think) They did this a couple of years ago, but really simple AND their pockets are still functional! Loved the patching up of that massive hole you did! That came out so cute!

Also maybe this idea would work better with high waisted shorts, and if you just cut out the fabric you could see, you can keep the pockets.

couldn;t u have just cut out like that section, like a window? the pockets would still be there...just less structurally sound
if she did that the pockets would only be hanging on by one seam, and would dangle awkwardly and probably make the shorts look bulgy and weird.
