Thanks - am very pleased with them. The only problem I have had is that I dropped the bike in France - outside a hotel with a newly laid, thick layer of gravel - put my foot down and sunk - as I was fully loaded with luggage the bike went down - not hard. The gravel scrapped some of the lovely black coating off in a speckled pattern. I have now got some Hi-temp silicone coasting and hope to film my efforts at repair.
I am going to change the stock pipes with V&H big shot staggered black on my 2012 fatbob but the problem is I don't know what to do with the active exhaust control valve and the controller. at the end of your very useful video you mentioned something about it but didn't show it while removing the stock pipe. thanks for your time
Initially I just disconnected it, I then had to take out the battery box to get to the end within the bike and remove it, fiddly but straight forward. Vance and Hines supply blanking plugs which cost me £29 in the UK. The instructions with the blanking plugs is straight forward and it is a simple job - the blanking pugs are 'plural' as there is one for the active exhaust and one for the air intake, if you change that, which inevitably you will do in changing to V&H.
Hi TeeRoq Thanks fo the thanks!! I would suggest keep them clean and polish them lots - I would have thought the chrome is likely to be better than original equipment. Check you tune it right to prevent any bluing of the pipes. Handle them carefully when fitting, although I would have thought hey are not so fragile as the black, which scratches fairly easily if you are not careful. Enjoy your pipes and that great sound.
I just disconnected it, I then had to take out the battery box to get to the end within the bike and remove, fiddly but straight forward. I searched for the Vance and Hines blanking plugs - I suspect in the UK you get them with the package but my tubes had come in from the states, It cost me £29 from V Mania.
Yes - I should re-shoot the end of the video to cover it. I was actually waiting for the part to arrive. The part is the Vance and Hines Active Exhaust valve & Intake bypass device - in reality a blanking plus. The advice is to use this part, although initially I actually tucked the cables away, then added the blanking plug a few days later - which caused no problems at all.
I think you will need to 'open up' the air filter - in other words, you need to upgrade it. There are products that keep the stock cover and you just need to replace the internals. But the new pipes demand more air, so you need to provide that with a new air filter.
Hi Steve: i have installed a short shots and a fuel pack,i followed the map i was given,,now the fuel consumption is ridiculous,,i have to refill the tank twice for a ride around 100 miles!!!! but the major problem is the performance i can barely reach 80 mph,,contacted V&H but they dont seem to know what to say, everytime i am asked a stupid question about this and that like a doctor trying to figure out whether you shoud get an aspirine or paracetamol while you have a flat foot
Hi Steve, thanks for the tutorial. I need to know the size of the screws that replace the transmission to 391-P bracket, size of the spacer, and the four screws of dogbone. Thank you.
Thanks for ur reply. Plz keep the videos coming really like ur Videos. Another question is If u go for another bike which one would u select fatbob, Wideglide or Softail
Sorry to hear the problems you have had - I think this is a problem with all 'black' exhaust systems. I do love that I am not continually having to polish chrome pipes - but I did wonder about this. Is there a paint that can be used I wonder, I will do some research.
I added the k and N filter to allow plenty of air through. I was trying to decided between a Power Commander HD Power Vision but then picked up a supertuner unused (which is important as it logs to just one bike) on eBay for a snip. The Harley guys will want you to get a Super Tuner becasue oftent hey claim to be the only ones who can then tune your bike, which isn't true. The Super Tuner is OK but a little dated in its software, which is extra on top.
I have a question on exhaust gaskets. Would it be ok to use the gaskets that vance and hines provides in the box?. Instead of using the screaming eagle gaskets. Thanks.
thanks for the info again, which one I have to buy ? Vance and Hines Active Exhaust valve & Intake bypass device ( £29 )or just the Active exhaust valve bypass device? ( £19,99)
Thanks for the reply mate, so I have to purchase the bypass plug separately!! what about the Teleflex cable which is connected to the valve and the controller? how can I get rid of it?
Hi Steve thanks for the video. I bought HD gaskets. Will those do? I actually just put them in and they were a bitch. However i think i pushed in the top a bit and it bent a little bit..is that bad?
Thanks for the detailed Vid.. it's on my wish list next month.. Installing Chrome V&H Big Radius on my Dyna Wide Glide 06' Looking at some pics through, It seems like it's in the way of the Oil cap/stick. Any ideas on that?
Is it just my set or did the front header not fit into the cylinder? Normally a header will sit inside the cylinder but the front header was just as wide as the hole in the cylinder
Hi, thanks for your great video :) Ive just bought a V&H Big Shots Staggered exhaust for my 2011 Fat Bob, could you please give me a little more info on blanking out the active exhaust?
No straight through - my brother did get stopped once here up north in the UK by a policeman, who said if he didn't add baffles to his Honda Blackbird he would be fined. He had to have them fitted and then go to the police station to prove it! I have never had any trouble, and it always passes it annual road suitability test (MOT).
Great video!!! Thanks a lot for posting it! Any advice on keeping chrome VH Big Radius looking good? Mine's coming with chrome (wish it was black, but it isnt). Thanks again!!
How long would you think itll take to uninstall stock pipes and to install a new stock? Im a young gun with no experience ready to get into the motorcylce industry and jus want to know the timing of things. Plz get back to me and thanks for the video man🤙🏽
Hi Steve, I just bought 2012 FXD Dyna Super Glide and I need to change the damaged exhaust pipes, any chance you know if any Dyna exhaust will fit? I have my eye on few Vance & Hines exhausts but am not sure if it fits my model.
Really useful video, thanks. I just did V&H short shots (staggered) in black on my 2015 Street Bob. Only points I would add; 1) Bloody active exhaust valve on stock pipes isn't mentioned in any V&H literature, probably as its only on non-USA bikes? Not difficult to work out how to disconnect but still. 2) Circlips are finger eaters even with the right tools, detest them. 3) FairPlay, excellently engineered exhausts, fitted like a dream, new exhaust gaskets are thinner than originals as supplied. 4) There will be bits left over, and trying to lift the stock system into the attic as one is tough! 5) Would have taken loads longer without this video. 6) Top man!
doing the same to my 2015 Street Bob now , VnH Big shots .. been told to completely remove the AEV Unit , and use Dynojet Active air box and Active Exhaust Bypass Eliminator Kit to terminate the connections , eliminating the fault codes . would this be correct ? have the bike stripped ready to roll ..parts unpacked and now am at a road block :(
+Greg Dawson left my stuff in place apart from detaching the cable from the exhaust valve. Not currently changed air filter or fuel programmer or anything. Get a bit of a pop decelerating down hill so might get a fuelpak longer term and see how that works. Good luck.
+Ian James Cheers , Have a FP3 Tuner and VO2 Air cleaner in the mail .. I read somewhere ,if u were to tie up the cable end at full open position it can trick the ECM into thinking all is good, allowing the standard fuel management diagnostics to compensate, and eliminate the popping on decel .. maybe worth a try while u wait for a tuner ?
+Greg Dawson that makes sense, might give that a try thanks. Wife is off to USA in Jan so hoping she'll bring me back a FP3 then 😉😉 which cleaner option have you gone for? My bike is in denim black so want something appropriate. Cheers

I have the stock mounting bracket, the bolts snapped, I'm having a hell of a time locating the nuts and bolts to fix. Does anybody know the hardware sizes so I can re mount my bracket?
Great video Stephen!! Would you know if a EU Approved exhaust system from a Softail 2000 would fit into a Dyna Low Rider 2001 by any chance?? Thanks in advance....
Hi from spain, Thanks a lot of for your videos. I am waiting from EEUU a big radius exhaust, but I have a dude. When i will change the exhaust, i must buy new gaskets exhaust or the new exhaust include new gaskets??? Thanks.
I agree with Tim - it is essential to put in new gaskets when you change your exhaust. They are cheap so no problem there. You may get away reusing the ones that come out, but why chance it and have to refit everything. Particularly the couch gaskets - certainly little chance of a good seal reusing them.
Timothy Rouse hi. I use the power vision. Easy to use, many options, many info of the bike, auto tune, check and erase errors, etc etc. To use only connect, modify ECM , disconnect and run
I have the Screaming Eagle tuner - but the Power Vision from Power Commander looks great. I understand ValdemarAK47 you could change the tune while on route - that is, you are travelling down the highway with one map, if you stop and turn off the bike you can change to another map for the twisty back roads?
Sounds to me that the Map is wrong, but I am no expert. You are now got straight through pipes and do need to upgrade the air intake, then have the map to handle the change. Make the upgrade and re-Map is my inexpert advice.
Yes it's the nuts at the manifold, all 4 of them. Even had it at the dealer. All they did was re-torqued it. Came loose again on the 10 mile ride home. Even the stock exhaust was loose too when I started the change over. You think red lock tite would work around all the heat at the exhaust flange?
I just spoke with my dealer. They seem to think that my studs must be bad. I also used James Genuine gaskets too. I heard someone say on a chat forum that you should use Harley exhaust gaskets on V&H pipes. I also E-mailed V&H asking which are the best to use. I will have the dealer put new studs in for me. Thanks for the quick response Steve, I'll keep you informed.
Hi Steve, I have the Fatboy 2011 Australian model which comes with Active Exhaust Module attached to the OEM pipe but I want to install V&H pipe my self.Could you please tell me how to deal with that piece of shit?
G'day mate can u plz make video of how to tune a bike with screaming eagle tuner plz . if u can. That would be really helpful for newbe people like me.Thanks for the great videos. Keep up Coming plz. thanks heapsss
12 yrs old and still the best video out on this. Thanks!
8 years after this video was made, it still being as useful as the first day. Thank you very much!
This is an awesome video! The amount of detail and cut away images is extremely helpful. Thank you so much for posting this!
Dude I just picked one of these bikes up and I'm adding these pipes on this weekend! Awesome!
I am going to change the stock pipes with V&H big shot staggered black on my 2012 fatbob but the problem is I don't know what to do with the active exhaust control valve and the controller. at the end of your very useful video you mentioned something about it but didn't show it while removing the stock pipe. thanks for your time
Nice job Steve. Thanks for taking the time.

Just got my pipes in today! I'm about to start the install and I can't wait. Thanks so much for the video. it's going to be very helpful.
Hi TeeRoq

Enjoy your pipes and that great sound.
I have always loved these pipes!
You are welcome and htank you for the support.
wish you had one for the adaptors for the 2015 Street glide special floor boards.
No, sorry I have been away again - I will try and get it done within the next month.
im thinking about putting the Vance & Hines Big Radius 2-into-1 Chrome Exhaust on my softtail hertiage i want more deep rumbles and roarrs
I needed both due to upgrading my intake to a K&N - so you may need both, if you have upgraded the air intake, or are likely to int he future.
Going to do the tear down tonight, and install tomorrow - your vid is going to help me a lot. Oh, and SUBSCRIBED!!
Steve Hill what is the exhaust model number??
At 11:11 what was it that you were doing there? I don’t remember seeing that piece there.
I think you will need to 'open up' the air filter - in other words, you need to upgrade it. There are products that keep the stock cover and you just need to replace the internals. But the new pipes demand more air, so you need to provide that with a new air filter.
Good job, thanks for your time.
I will add to the list - the Screamin Eagle tuning is unspectacular, but I will rat and make it useful.

Good video. I got some Rush full systems but this will help with the dis-assembly of stock. Thank you.
Glad it helped - just what I aimed to do, and not just for Vance and Hines users. Hope it all goes well.
hi Steve, can i install only the short shots exchaust without touching the stock air cleaner ?
Love your videos. Going to get the same pipes.
I added the k and N filter to allow plenty of air through. The Super Tuner is OK but a little dated in its software, which is extra on top.
Hi Steve, did you install the super tuner when you put on vance n hines? is it necessay or the harley guys r just trying to pocket more money!
I have a question on exhaust gaskets. Would it be ok to use the gaskets that vance and hines provides in the box?. Instead of using the screaming eagle gaskets. Thanks.
Great video!
thanks for the info again, which one I have to buy ? Vance and Hines Active Exhaust valve & Intake bypass device ( £29 )or just the Active exhaust valve bypass device? ( £19,99)
No videos ever show the actual torque ING of the flange nuts and torque specs , like to see it actually done
Thanks for the reply mate, so I have to purchase the bypass plug separately!! what about the Teleflex cable which is connected to the valve and the controller? how can I get rid of it?
Thanks for a great video. Do you know what the difference in weight is between the original system and the V@H 2 into 2?
Excellent video! I'm thinking about a set for my FXSTC.
Hi Steve thanks for the video. I bought HD gaskets. Will those do? I actually just put them in and they were a bitch. However i think i pushed in the top a bit and it bent a little bit..is that bad?
Do you not use any lock tight on bracket and bolts then ?
Thanks for the detailed Vid.. it's on my wish list next month.. Installing
Chrome V&H Big Radius on my Dyna Wide Glide 06'
Looking at some pics through, It seems like it's in the way of the Oil cap/stick.
Any ideas on that?
Nice vid! I want to replace crush gaskets on my 2007 softail, but dont know the diameter size of the gasket is should get. Can you tell me the size?
Not a problem at all. It isn't as easy to get to it but that is all, I have had no problems with the cap or stick, or refilling.
Is it just my set or did the front header not fit into the cylinder? Normally a header will sit inside the cylinder but the front header was just as wide as the hole in the cylinder

Sorry for later reply - sorry not off the top of my head.
Nice video very helpful
Good video - you did a great job - only wish it was a bit longer with more detail. You did this one well. Thanks.
Awesome! Great advice, thanks again!
Hi from spain, Thanks a lot of for your videos. I am waiting from EEUU a big radius exhaust, but I have a dude. When i will change the exhaust, i must buy new gaskets exhaust or the new exhaust include new gaskets??? Thanks.

Steve, You having any trouble with your exhaust nuts coming loose with the V&H Big radius. Mine keeps coming loose on my 1200 Custom?
No i haven't at all since I fitted the exhaust, all firm and tight. Is it the nuts at the manifold, or the support bolts etc. towards the rear?
Yes it's the nuts at the manifold, all 4 of them. Even had it at the dealer. All they did was re-torqued it. Came loose again on the 10 mile ride home. Even the stock exhaust was loose too when I started the change over. You think red lock tite would work around all the heat at the exhaust flange?
+Curt8153 strange - I am surprised the dealership didn't identify a problem. Not sure what's happening there.

+Curt8153 Thanks, that should hopefully resolve the problem. My crutch gaskets were not HD but came from V & H.
is it really worth the money getting this exhaust? I've got a 2014 fatbob thats already got a nice tone. I dont know if its worth it :/
what did u do with the active exhaust control system ?
+Greg Dawson
Disconnected it.
I've never seen an oem gasket press in that easily you lucked out,,
Hi Steve,
I have the Fatboy 2011 Australian model which comes with Active Exhaust Module attached to the OEM pipe but I want to install V&H pipe my self.Could you please tell me how to deal with that piece of shit?
THANK YOU A LOT!!!!!
