70 - How to Build a 6 ft. Standard Cherry Bookcase 4K

This is a project that we built for a client. It is a 6 foot tall Standard Bookcase made from Cherry. It also is built with a single sheet of ¾’ Combination plywood, (which is an engineered plywood that has a veneer core sandwiched between 2 layers of MDF, then outer layers of flat sawn cherry), and it consists of a solid cherry top and trim. The project features adjustable shelves, and in addition to being 6’ tall, it is 2 feet wide, and 1’ in depth.
This is a fantastic project that is a lot of fun to build and doesn’t need a lot of skill. Having a table saw helps a lot, but not a lot of tools are needed to complete it. Plus everyone needs a bookcase or two.

We love teaching the world to do woodworking.
Watching your kids help you reminds me of my dad. I spent half my childhood crawling under, over, and behind things to hold for him. I remember it fondly.
Biscuits will provide extra holding power on the mitered corners of the bottom molding. If this bookcase gets placed on a carpet floor and someone tries to move it, it places a great deal of stress on the corners of the molding. The biscuits ensure the corners never come apart. Just a suggestion from one furniture maker to another. We can always learn new tips and tricks to help make our final product last long after we've gone.
I have recently watched several of your videos and I really appreciate the level of skill that your daughters have with power tools and the great care that they take when handling them each and every time. I am trying to teach my kids the same thing!
LOVE the trick of doing a mitered cut in a straw to make a corner glue scraper. That is truly awesome.
What a gorgeous bookshelf! I'm inspired to make one myself now. Well done to you and the family!
Finally, a bookcase build that does not end with the case getting painted. Love it.
James, great video as always! Loved the humor in this one. You take what seems to be a crazy difficult project and break it down and show that it is not that hard. Us newbies can make great things too! Keep up the great work!
Thank you! You are very kind.
This was very helpful in moving me forward on my own bookcase project. I previously had no idea how to make my own cove moulding and from this video was inspired to create some this morning (I have a pin nailer on order now to get it attached). I also was in a quandary about whether it would be okay to glue a solid maple panel to my plywood top and it set my mind at ease to know that the wide gluing area would serve as a laminate and not to worry overmuch about wood movement. I may even try to make this exact project at some point if I can get an assistant. Thank you for the useful and inspirational video.
The straw tool glue cleanout is a great tip. I always have issues with that. Wish I'd thought of it.
I love the tip about the straw for getting glue out of the corners. Thank you!
love that zero clearance tape on the miter saw. I just got some of that stuff myself. thanks for sharing!
James, that is absolutely beautiful! Emily loves it and it look great in her apartment. Thank you so much for time to do this for her.
Thank you Frank! We are very happy she likes it. And I really appreciate you giving us the opportunity to build & film it, and for being so patient with our schedule.
You always introduce people in your video. They are never nameless beings hovering in the background. What wonderful courtesy. I can only imagine you are a respectful person who also receives a lot of respect.
I'm awed by your old-style, once-upon a time common manners & courtesy.
Dear James,
Another yet beautifully made book case your customer will cherish & enjoy using it. It's always an absolute pleasure watching you & your family creating exceedingly nice pieces of work. Kind regards.
Thank you so much!
I love your explanations, no assumption of your viewer's expertise. Thank you
Enjoy the way you describe how to do everything and that your girls help you out great job.
Fantastic tip for drawing the arch, really dressed up my bookcase build! Thanks!
Thanks James, I didn't know titebond had come out with a new glue. Ordering now. Lol. Like those sanding pad, I will order some from your link.
That grain is absolutely beautiful. Really cool teamwork. Reminds me of when my Pops would highly encourage me to come help him work on the car. I never thought I enjoyed it until you meet grown men that have zero trade skills and appear lost when a thought is required. I just wanna know a little about a lot. Thank you for the knowledge.
Perfect bookcase! My wife ordered 2 of these. Guess i have to get to work! Marvelous
Drooling over that plywood, just gorgeous.
You continue to provide the best woodworking content on RUclips!! Fantastic instruction as usual!!!
What a beautiful bookcase. Excellent tutorial on your builds. Awesome job guys y’all take care.
Thank you very much!
Great job! I feel like making something after watching this. Love that Rockler jig, a great piece of kit to have. I made my own out of an old cupboard someone threw away and used electrical tape on the drill bit to set the depth. It works but by the time you have drilled so many holes the tape is pretty sad. I would love to own an assembly bench like the one in the video.
Thank you for such an informative piece. It's terrific to see such an outstanding family enterprise & I liked the wry humour.
I really liked the raised panel look for the bottom trim.
Great to see the team putting together a beautiful constructed book case... A job well done again
Thank you Colin!
Oh I don’t know, I think that colour nail varnish would suit you ; )
Nice build, nice video, nice family. Look forward to your next video. 👍🏻
Haha, Thank you!
Thank you for your great Video's. I've been real sick and Have had several Heart Attack's. You saved my Life. I watched and like alot of Videos. The whole King family will have you in our hearts & prayers and we wish you a speedy recovery back to full health!
Looks like you taught them well as they use some pretty safe practices as I see it. Good job and great looking work
James and team, another outstanding video. Your videos cover the material in great detail but also safety. Once again thank you for sharing.
Hi Eddie. Thank you!
I really appreciate the way you build. You always explain what you are doing in layman’s terms.I love the plan and I am goin gto make one
Another fine woodworking project from the King family. Great job. I'll have to get some of that Titebond 2000. 😉
😆😂🤣👍🏻
I like the fact that the glue sweeps itself to the trash ! :) Great educational video, thanks for sharing your fine woodworking with us.
Haha, Thank you!
I really like the results you got from the raised panel bit.
Yes, All of the different raised panel bit shapes seem to make really nice trim profiles.

Hi King family. I watched 5 vid's so far. I really enjoy your work. Good voice over, video camera skills. Looks you are having fun with your family its good to see that.
I love that the whole family is involved... Respect to you, Sir!
Thank you!
Another great project. Awesome team work, love the family being involved.
I'm imagining your shop with one of those hose reels from the ceiling and instead of air or water/oil, you've got a feed to the Titebond drum so you can get GPM of glue on your projects.
That is a fantastic idea!!
I imagined Ghostbusters style slime blowers
James, you've got everything I need. A big shop, nice wood materials, awesome tools and great woodworking skills. Really enjoy to watch and as a bonus, I learn things.
Thank you!
And he has Great help!
Chis, you are correct! I could do nothing without my family helping!
The glue we have today is very good and we no longer need to flood the parts. You may want to include that in your dialogue. You are a great woodworker .
...... and there is no to much glue....
This Cherry looks very nice. Never seen such a kind of plywood here in Germany.
Thank you for this video.
Hello Alfred, thank you!
I've never seen plywood like that in Australia either.
This video is simply superb!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Very nice work. I really enjoyed the video and appreciate the fact you ahve involved your kids as well. This is a skill that can be used as a career or hobby that can last a lifetime. I particularly appreciate the attention to detail and like you I see the value in lots of glue.
Beautiful work Mr King, Sai's wrist "tattoo" is the best!!! 😄 she cracks me up with the photo Bombing. I LOVE yall's videos!
Mr James you are a wood working genious thank you, i enjoy all your shows
Hi Joe, Thank you!
This guy is a true perfectionist and master.

And, you can never have too many clamps!
I love the straw trick, very clever!
Awesome build guys and gals....as well as the extra tips on how to....have a great weekend..
Thank you Robert!
Very nice project James and family.
Nice work. You make me want to be more accurate with my cuts. Thanks. Nice to have help.😊😊
Thankyou for your response😁😁😁😁😁
As always, you are a fountain of knowledge, with a nice mix of humor. Lovely shelf.
You are too kind Tyson! :-)
Gorgeous! You guys never fail to amaze me.
Hi Tammy, thank you!
Lovely bookcase. Your Girls are a credit to you James.
I have workshop envy. 😉
Hi Mike. Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos. Your attention to giving pointers as you build is very helpful, and your humor is always an added bonus. The bond you and your family have is very refreshing and the gentle way you present your builds adds alot. Keep doing what you're doing. I do have a technical question not about the actual build; what kind of dust collection do you use? Not much dust on your table saw. Thanks!
Thank you! I use a Grizzly 3HP dust collector. This exact model, and it works great! amzn.to/2wOUYwz
Thanks for showing & sharing that
That is a beautiful piece of furniture. Definitely showroom quality.
Perfect job you folks did. Awesome 👏👏👏
Thank you!!
Hi James,
Yet another fine video of you and your girls doing a great project. I really enjoy your passion for the craft. It reminds me of.....me.
I also want to say thank you for the quality of your productions, it's SO nice to watch your videos without all of yhe ego, drama and swearing. Keep it up, you're doing great. Thanks again my friend.
Hi Nathan, That is very kind. Thank you!
hi ben Türkiye den seyrediyorum videolarınızı ve yaptığınız işleri çok beğeniyorum ellerinize sağlık
Thoroughly enjoyable mate, I take a lot away from watching your videos due to the very nice instructional descriptions you give & the workflow that you take, even if you were to wear nail polish I’d still be encapsulated lol, just joking however another nice team effort guys 🍻🍻👍👍👍
Haha, Thanks Dirk!
Another great video and presented in layman terms as usual. Thanks.
Thank you!
I just ran across your site. Beautiful workmanship!
Another great video and piece of furniture. I would like to make a suggestion though. That bottom shelf, would have been nice if that was just a snug fit and not glued, with a finger hole in the back so you could remove it for secret storage. Nobody would ever know it was there with books on place, and plenty of storage for some valuables.
I love watching you work. So much envy.
Looks nice. Thanks for showing.
Gorgeous!!!! I need to order the sled cleaning GLUE!!!! Hahaha 👍🏽
Self cleaning!!! Dang autocorrect!!
You have some really good helpers!
That was a great exposition I am going to follow your example.
Very nice project that I think most can do in their home garage. The only thing i would do differently is to cut the width of the shelves about a 1/8" short that way you don't scratch the inside of the bookshelf when you are moving the shelves around.
Good tip!
I like to choose nail varnish to match my chosen t-shirt as well....
Only kidding. Great build. Nearly same way I build mine. Thanks for uploading 👍🏻🇬🇧
That is a very nice book cast, great job.
I really like the results you got with the raised panel bit.
Thanks for another great video. 😘 I keep thinking that Rupa must be coveting that build!
Haha, you are correct! She didn't want to let it go!
Much obliged to the creator of this plan for sharing such awesome work of yours in an extremely moderate expense [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. The nature of the work and the materials far surpasses the cost. This is the best offer as such.?
Love that push stick
Excellent project and detailed video. Compliments!
Great job on the bookshelf.
Another great project video. The directions you give are exceptional. The end product is beautiful. It looks like most of the family had a hand in this build.
I don’t see a link to the new Titebond 2000 glue. 😁 BTW - I also recommend those foam sanding blocks. They even work well with regular sandpaper.
I learned a straw technique for removing glue from you guys. I really enjoy the videos.
Great build James. Is quite a coincidence that I am starting today the exact same project almost identical
Haha, that's awesome! Post pictures in the community for us to see please.
Well done once again. I’m having a bad cold. So I’m home enjoying your videos. 😂
Thanks Luis! I hope you feel better soon!
Beautiful.
Thanks for making these videos they are very helpful
Thank you!
Awesome as usual, thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
James, great video. I love the fact of you teaching your daughters such a great trade. Totally enjoyed the build and the bookcase were awesome looking. I see you are still using your table saw sled. I built one last winter and love it. Did you just put 4 coats of clear on the bookcase? It looked a little darker than when you started but didn't think you used any stain. Thanks again for the great job!!
Thank you! Yes, 4 coats of clear semi-gloss lacquer.
stunning piece!
It's completely amazing, I want to learn this beautiful art
great instructive build, Thanks
Very nice and precise. It’s also nice that it’s a family affair.
nice job.
here is an idea.
when you make something that has a closed in space such as the bottom of your cherry cabinet, throw in a pic of your cabinet crew and letter of the job, new owner and King cabinet history. I think the owners wold be thrilled also.
Just think if someone were to find that after a 100 or 200 years. Wow.
Ciao.
Under the bottom shelf would be a great place to set up a hidden space for valuables.
Beautiful piece
Thank You.
Beautiful
Nice video. Biscuit joints actually make the joint weaker though - they are more used for alignment
Very nice setup.
Thanks very much for this. An excellent job! It would be interesting to know how many person-hours it took to build.
