- What an amazing experience! Over a four day vacation, I flew out from Vermont to chase the UP 4014.
Starting early morning in Provo to ending in Milford.
Union Pacific 4014 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world currently. Built in 1941, 4014 is one if the

I recall standing next to the Big Boy in Scranton, PA. Even though I am a Navy man (used to really big machines) that Big Boy was the most awesome thing I have ever seen. I love how it wears it's mechanical nature on the outside for all the world to see. All wheels, levers, pushrods, combining into the soul of the beast. Who says computers are the pinnacle of mans creative genus? I say this is, fully created in the mind of mem who had to do the math and the work themselves. Their blood literally becoming part of the machine.
The nice thing about these type of trains is you can SEE their power.

No matter how old I get I still love steam engines they play an important role in history and I’m glad that steam engines are making a return ❤️❤️ I live in PA and there’s an area called Steamtown and I have my picture taken right by a Big Boy ❤️❤️❤️
LOVE the sound of that deep bass whistle!
What a beautiful monster to see highballing down the main line again. I read somewhere that a common nickname for the Big Boys were "iron dragons" and listening to the whistle, I can hear why. One of the most complex and powerful machines ever built, and seeing one running full tilt is the sight of a lifetime.
The big boy wasn't particularly fast. But it could pull anything. It's 4-6-6-4 predecessor had a higher top speed. But nothing has th3 pulling power or tractive force of the Mighty Big Boy
That whistle is the voice of a spirit from the great beyond.
After flying the Boeing 747 for 22 years I can say this old gal gets your heart throbbing every bit as much as a night takeoff on an icy runway in the night in a snow storm.

It has to be a big thrill for the Big Boy engineers! -To experience the awesomeness from inside as well as hearing it outside, not to mention seeing all the Americans and others capturing the moments from roadsides and fields. 🚂

Took me 9 months to rebuild engine and firebox. At 6’5” 312 pounds I was brought to tears when I fired her. What ah beast. 1,250,000 pounds 14’2 tall 7, ooo horsepower. 135 feet long 11 feet wide. No joke here. Long live BIG BOY.

Here's something I've always wondered - how come she blows steam out of the cylinders non-stop for about a minute when she's starting off? Seams like a waste of steam, but I know nothing about how they work.
Demont Washington warm um the cylinders, I do the same with my g scale live steam locos. Looks cooler to crack the throttle and let it shoot out, but it does waste steam.
@@demontwashington5388 Pressure equalisation between the boiler and cylinders . Hence the term ''blowing off some steam''.

Thank You for fliming this I live in Provo Utah now days. However I grew up in the small town of Hinckley witch is 5 miles West Of Delta and when I saw the Train enter my Home Town County Of Millard County ( The Town Of Leamington ) I Started crying . Even as I wote this I cried.
I lived in Provo from 1993-2005 and for me, this was a great experience. Being the train nut that I am, I could watch this over and over and never get tired of it. It is some excellent videography. Thank you.

Anyone who would fly out from Vermont to chase the UP 4014, can't be all bad...I chased one from Denver almost to Cheyenne years ago, nothing to compare with driving alongside that engine...GREAT video.

The giant comes alive. And look how happy she is to be back in steam, and on the tracks. This is where all steam locomotives belong. Not rusting away as static exhibits in museums. In that state you can never get the feel, the smell, the look, the sound, or the beauty of motion that a steam locomotive represents. Excellent work UPRC. You understand the need and the feelings the public have for magnificent steam locomotives. Thank you for bringing her back to life, and allowing her to stretch her legs once again on the main line where she belongs.

No trains to Giraltar for 100 years, I read on a taxi.
Why?= to costly. what? The wood for the steam loomotive.
Even today the fuel for the loco is expensive, a mayor reason for closing railways.
The best solution is ........tested through all, inluding I make 10 year batteries. even if they work they will not pay. Because the live steam and the rods on the driver wheels, makes steam with hot metal increase passengers by 40%. 1/5 th of that to pay for the extra complication for the show that steam power is.-
Great observation. 4014 is the closest any machine comes to being living and breathing. You really DO "get it"!

We no longer have to imagine it! We were able to see it in person, and in August 2021 we'll be able to see it again!

Back in the early 90's there was a coal fired locomotive traveling from the east, to the west coast. Can't remember the name of it, but man, was it moving when it came through the little town of Sumner Illinois. Was soooo glad I was able to experience it with my two kids! It's something you never forget! :) :) :) :)
Some beautiful videos of the train and the countryside. I especially liked Big Boy passing the windmill farms. Quite a contrast. Well done.

I was watching the HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" recently, talking about how the lunar landers aren't just machines, but have a soul. How we give these machines names and treat them like they do. They have the collective soul of all her built her.
I think the same might be true here with 4014. You can just see something when she's running at full tilt, and feel something in that whistle. This engine is happy to be at it again.
Together with the tender it weighs about the same as three 747's. That's pretty insane!

I believe it weights close to a million pounds. Give or take a thousand pounds.
@@steven-nb6rt Locomotive and tender, which typically come as a unit, weigh in at 1.2 million Imperial pounds with no fuel or water loaded aboard. 600 Imperial Tons. The tender has a capacity for about 25,000 gallons of water. A gallon of water comes in at a bit less than 10 pounds. She holds a little over 6000 gallons of fuel oil. Figure that comes in at a bit less than 8 pounds per gallon.
Fully loaded and ready to roll, the #4014 clocks out at about 1.5 million Imperial pounds. 750 Imperial tons.

This is such a great train! I use to wonder why my dad loved steam trains so much! After seeing a few, I completely understand! I saw the American Freedom train when I was a kid! I have been hooked ever since! Great video, thanks for sharing!

I worked at Steamtown in Vermont in the early 1960s and we had sister locomotive 4012 On exhibit there. I towed it in with a big bulldozer.
Wow, very cool! it sucks that SteamTown left Vermont. I have seen 4012 at Steamtown in PA a few times. when they moved, did 4012 get towed on the railroad like 4014 was from CA to WY? or was it a truck?

George Gershwin was a classically trained composer who also loved the blues. He said he was inspired by the train he was riding to write a lot of the fiffs for "Rhapsody in Blue". The rhythm of the engine and the clicking of the rails sets up a groove that a good musician can improvise with and use to actually create great music. How many cool country songs have that same beat?
These things are not just transportation, they're also big musical instruments. They are cool beyond anybody's ability to adequately describe, and on many, many different levels. A smart guy could probably write a doctoral thesis on all of the different levels of appeal that they have.

I would honestly disagree about being the "most beautiful". It is an amazing locomotive however to me, most beautiful locomotives are the Streamliners. The Milwaukee Road Hiawatha F7, NYC J3a Dreyfuss Hudson, SP GS4 Daylight, and of course the Russian Class P36 (Green & Red scheme)

I saw him coming up the UPRR Wagoner Subdivision from Van Buren Arkansas in the city of Claremore Oklahoma. He was a beautiful beast of a locomotive. I hope to see him running the High Iron again.

for those watching and aren't sure why a diesel engine is in the consist: the big boy is freight locomotive and wasn't designed for passenger service. 4014's generators don't supply enough current to power the rest of the train. so the diesel supplies the needed power to the rest of the train. in addition it acts as a backup in case 4014 suffers a catastrophic systems failure. while highly unlikely, given the age of the engine and its components it's a real possibility. there's also a maintenance shop car in the train just in case...
4014 was also designed to pull much larger loads than the few passenger cars it pulls around in this video. so the diesel also acts as a load simulator when it engages its dynamic braking system.

Mostly incorrect. The diesel is there for dynamic breaking. This saves the brakes on the engine and the vintage cars that are expensive to replace. How do I know? I rode on the train in the Challenger dome car in May 2019 during the Spike 150 celebration in Ogden and Promontory Summit Utah. We rode from Ogden, Ut to Evanston, Wy. That trip is why the Big Boy was built, to take trains over the Wasatch grade. Part of the train ride was a briefing by Ed Dickens the engineer and head of the UP steam program and a tour of all the cars. I was in the cab of 4014. All of these questions were answered.
The diesel is not there for power to the train. The first three cars behind the diesel are maintenance of way cars and crew sleeping cars (kitchen, laundry, etc.). There is a machine shop and all the supplies they need for any trip. The second car behind the diesel (Howard Fogg) is a power car that supplies power for the maintenance cars . It was originally a power car for passenger trains. You can see the generator radiator grill on the side of the car at the beginning of the video.
The 4TH car from the end of the train in the beginning of the video is car 2066 a power car for the passenger cars. It also has coolers, freezers and pantrys for the dining car. In this video there is no dining car but when we rode the train in May there was a dining car right in front of 2066. We walked through the entire train the day before the ride.

the engines (4014s) brakes are for the engine only. they don't have any bearing on the rest of the consist. which is why each car has its own set of brakes. 4014s compressors supply more than enough air to power the brakes on the rest of the train. whoever told you they are using dynamic braking to stop the train is full of it. they use dynamic braking in conjunction with the air brakes. not as a sole means of slowing or stopping the train.. and to simulate a load if they take 4014 up to full throttle
when the engineer in 4014 applies the brakes, the rest of the trains brakes follow suit including those on the diesel. it's kinda the way they work.. you know.. a safety thing..
the brake shoes have been standard sizes for the better part of a century...
also again, the diesel engine is there to provide emergency motive power to get the train to nearest siding or yard in the event of a systems failure on 4014...they can't just start pulling stuff apart on a main line somewhere in EBFE if the thing breaks down for whatever reason.
My thoughts of this super engine is actually two engines put together, an tracks had to be changed for this engine to make the curves .love watching this great video!
@@muddtrack6969 the type is known as a "Mallet" (french pronunciation - silent "T"). they are articulated so they are able to negotiate the same rails as all the other rolling stock. there were attempts in russia at making a 6 axled, non-articulated engine however it wasn't capable of even getting thru a normal switch without either tearing up the tracks or de-railing.
there are 5 axled engines such as the BR50 or BR52 in germany, the russian decapods and UP had one on static display in Julia Davis park in Boise ID, for many years but i don't know the fate of it. they put a Mikado on display at the Depot in Boise a few years back..
the 5 axles in some german engines had floating trailing and leading axles and the center axle had either no flange and a very wide running surface on the tire or in some cases a very small flange to prevent excessive track and tire wear

I chased the 4014 across Western Iowa this last summer. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. My pictures were OK, but nothing like the thrill of this video!

I literally believe that steam trains, like this 4-8-8-4 Big Boy were either museum pieces, left out to rust, or scrapped. It's good to see them running, again!
4014 was a Museum piece for a very long time out in Pomona CA. It was kept indoors so very well preserved. Which made it the best candidate for a restoration and return to service.
@@SternLX I’ve seen a video of a Challenger 4-6-6-4 pulling freight past a line of diesel locomotives doing the same thing, will we ever see the Big Boy doing this as well?
@@kempmt1 If UP does do a freight haul with 4014 it'll be an exhibition run since it's only 1 of 2 Steam Loco's in the Heritage fleet. The other being 844 which was primarily used for Passenger service.
This modified product is really estontioning also very interesting.perhaps shall be a show piece of museums.no words to praise while utelisation steam locos.
