The idea of independence for African countries did not start with Lumumba. The idea of SELF-DETERMINATION OF PEOPLES germinated at the BANDUNG conference under the impetus of the President of Indonesia in 1955. Moreover, many African countries did not wait for Lumumba to have their independence.
You have to tell the truth to the children: Lumumba was not the hero you want people to believe.
If it were enough to die to be a great man, there would be many great men in the Congo.
      Regarding the Congolese Genocide:
      1) The Belgians perpetrated by their genocide in a colonized Congo.
      2) The partisans of Lumumba, MULELE, GIZENGA, GBENYE and consort perpetrated their genocide in an independent Congo, between 1963 and 1964. They are Congolese who killed other Congolese.
The killings took place especially in the district of HAUT UELE because in 1960, this district voted primarily for the PNP party and not for the MNC.
      3) Do a search for "Congo Rebel Atrocities". You will judge for yourself.

As a Belgian I'm ashamed of what my country did, for me Lumumba is a huge rollmodel, admire him more than every king Belgium had and ever will have. Belgium is a rich country, sadly that's only because it suppressed DRC, my dad always learned me; you can only be rich if someone else is poor, the only thing I can do is apologise in the name of Belgium but I hope they will do it officially and not a small quote in the newspaper and maybe more aid and money to DRC to get them on equal foot. I read the comments about people one day Belgium will pay the price, I really hope you mean the Belgian state, because the people honor Lumumba more than the king. I'm sorry Lumumba, I'm sorry DRC, I'm sorry Africa and I'm sorry world for taking away this oppurtunity to a better and more equal society. May He Rest In Peace.

It is a bit infuriating and maybe even a bit funny that some journalists still call the Soviet Union ''the Empire of Evil'', even though it was the Soviet Union that was promoting the ideology of the friendship of different nations (hence the name of the university, by the way), while powerful Capitalist governments were promoting Imperialism and assassinating democratic leaders in Africa, and yet not many journalists are willing to call Imperialists the Empires of Evil.

Patrice Lumumba is such an important figure to learn about not only because of his strong principles and huge role in anticolonialism, but also because there's a prevalent racist idea in the west that conflict, corruption and instability are inevitabilities in African societies. Patrice Lumumba's story goes some way in showing that these aren't inevitabilities but products of historic and ongoing (neo)colonial violence and extraction and the actors in the nation that collaborate in and profit from colonial extraction.

And teach them about the Vorster-Kissinger meeting that took place on June 23 1976 at Hotel Bodenmais in Germany, and why Patrice Lumumba opposed what he had heard about in that went on in the meeting. You can read the declassified transcript of that entire meeting online at the ford library museum website. It is despicable and sad to see how the former Nazi "victim" and former Nazi sympathizer discussed the futures of neighboring African countries to maintain the stronghold in SA, on behalf of several US corporations. I'm glad Kissinger's finally gone from this world.

In the name of Lumumba, Mulele, Gizenga and consort killed our teachers, our priests, our customary chiefs and even our peasants.
The first genocide in the Congo was perpetrated by Mulele, Gizenga and consort, who are all followers of LUMUMBA.
LUMUMBA was embittered against the Belgians because he was imprisoned for stealing. It is also because of this that he began to do politics.
Lmumba's supporters were drug addicts who wanted to blindly import into the Congo the theme of "class struggle", a theme that was dear to the Communists.

Lumumba was a new breed of African leader that was unwilling to kowtow to the western colonial powers, the United States included. They wanted puppets that would continue the status quo under the guise of Independence. Lumumba wanted his people to be truly free from Belgian rule. He and Malcolm X shared a depth of similarities with one another in erudition, oratorical abilities, and courageousness. Both were unwilling to back down in the face of tyranny, which costed them their lives. But their legacy can be seen in the thousands of young black and brown people that no longer are willing to accept brutality by always tuning the other cheek. Because as brother Lumumba always knew and Brother Malcolm always knew all lives matter, but it seems as if Black people especially but all people of color collectively are the only ones that have to cogently express that fact and fight for the acknowledgment of that fact on a daily basis.
