Trip-hop godfather Tricky is joined by vocalist Francesca Belmonte and a live band as he brings his brand of dark poetry into the Guardian's studios with a live performance of Nothing's Changed. The song is featured on False Idols, his first studio album since 2010's Mixed Race, released through his label of the same name.

It depends on how you define (or don't define) success- and happiness for that matter. He's professionally and financially successful, and those are just two aspects of a life lived well. One must first construct his/her own definition of success before making such a statement.

@@cainoble I'm well aware of that, and I was probably just bored enough to expand on Tricky's statement by offering my unsolicited opinion which is what annoys many people. In my opinion, Success and happiness are very much related if one defines success correctly. When the definition of success is limited to ones own personal or professional pursuits, the attainment of the goals will serve as more of a benchmark or stepping stone than a destination. I've followed Tricky closely enough to comprehend things from his perspective, but like Bob Dylan, he is an artist and a public figure, and his philosophy cannot be summarized by one quote. Success can and does come with great pain and sadness many times, but living in accordance with natural law(or higher laws if one is so inclined), accompanies one with a longer term contentment or joy that can and/or can't be as easily affected by whatever level or culmination point of success one strives for- it's more of a state of being than an end justified by any means. In my opinion, ultimate success is to reach the highest potential or purpose of ones capacity, which is defined by ones perspective, and that isn't as black and white as saying this is this or that and if this then this or by getting this you can have that.
Also, there is such a thing as neurotic laughter and psychotic enjoyment from the suffering of others, as well as joyful sadness, so it really comes down to how you are measuring the "success." I want to be a rockstar with abunch of money and time- got it. Still not happy. I want to achieve my highest purpose and push the envelope of possibility for all sentient beings to be able to in turn propel the possibilities and potential of the cosmic organism further into what is actually possible. Happiness can be the 'fluttering butterfly that lands on me from time to time when I'm not paying attention.' No disrespect man, sorry if I annoyed you.
@@o0GrayMatters0o No, you're not annoying. Just boring --- but I'm certain that's also just a projection of my own self loathing, or bitterness. It's :::not::: that your opinion is necessarily unsolicited or even unwelcome (for some Catz here); you just seem like one who likely has an opinion on EVERYTHING. Every person, place, or thing --- especially every word (always defined on your own terms of course ) --- so many words of which I wasn't even interested enough in, to finish. No worries, I've had this same weird linguistics disease since childhood. I'm surprised I even made it this far to the end of my own post.

Saw Tricky open up for Tool's Lateralus tour at Irvine Meadows in early 2000's. Tricky was very Trippy but so was Tool. Interesting combination.

I love that string instrument break part. I agree with his recent interview for UNDER THE RADAR that he should bring vocalist talent out more. Both in the studio and live. Really happy he's recording allot now..peace.

People, explain me plz. Why such an absolute genius as Tricky has so absolutely few views? Other artists whom i adore have millions and billions (Asap Rocky, for instance). Maybe because Tricky doesn't really love being famous and maybe not promotes his songs?
He was very popular in his niche in 90's though, a years of prime time of trip-hop and electronic music. He was on radio, tv, films etc. It's just too difficult to carry your audience through 30 years if it wasn't big enough and without big investments.

@@varshykable You can listen some of his lyrics on 3 and 4 album, especially his mocking on popularity, to realize that he had his fame and it was bothered him due to humble nature. And just realize of all big 3, he is still active. Portishead's last record was in 2008 and Massive Attack in 2010. It's just this music's gone.

You need to talk to Bobby Ray Tricky.
I think he means money, and professional success doesn't buy happiness- and it doesn't, it just affords a new plateau, a new standard of living, from which to seek it. A financially successful person becomes less worried about matters that are lower on the hierarchy of needs, and can occupy his/her time with matters of greater/higher importance, such as self-realization/actualization- which I think (other than leaving a successful legacy behind) is the highest form of success a person can achieve. It's much too complex to simplify or generalize for everybody equally across the board. Tricky's just being Tricky.
