I saw Tricky live in 1998 and was 20 years old. This song was the first on the setlist. My heart about jumped out of my chest on that bass. I'm white and like only a handful of rappers. It literally ratted my cage. It took about a minute before I could feel comfortable with it. It is one of my favorites of his, even at that point. That bass took my breath away, thinking at the time "Can I handle this?" She-at! Roll with it, I thought. I remember Tricky and the gang smoking a joint on stage that night and I have never seen anyone since do that on stage. Was in AWE! Great show!!!! Feel lucky to have witnessed his greatness in full glory.
@@alinazaranska9135 I will never forget. I was 11. I was not allowed to watch MTV or any media as a kid. But at Grandmas...I was allowed! I would run to the old TV and turn on MTV as soon as I entered the house. Before sayin hello. I turned on MTV that day expecting to hear what I already knew. And then I saw the Smells like Teen Spirit Video for the first time!! I'll never forget. It started a wave that lasts a life time!!! I sat there on my knees gazing into the Screen...Almost drowned in that Video. And then I drowned into Nirvana's music for the next three, four years...I didn't come up to breathe so to say 😉...I was addicted to their music. So extremely obsessed that my father who wanted me to become a clissacal violinist started seariously seariously hate this band. Wayyyy But I still understand the obsession 30 years later. I didn't understand just every single word as a young because English was not my First language to learn..I grew up learning German and English since Grade one..I stole my mother's credit cars at the age of 11 because I wanted to live in Seattle. I started studying every single song of Nirvana on the guitar.. that's why I quit Violin and started playin guitar until today. They def also changed my life. But i am 41 years old. There are just so many touching artists out there who have impressed me for a life time
Tricky was at his best with Martina. Her voice and essence both complemented and contrasted his in a way that was truly alchemical. He's not been the same since.
@@markgnarz5399 , what did she do with Mark Lanegan? I recently read his memoir (wonderful book by the way) and in it he talks about meeting her in a bar in NY (I think) and she mentioning that she would love to work with him but the impression I got was that he never got around to doing so.
I was looking for any footage from this same year at Newport Music in Columbus. Amazing show, I still think about it sometimes all this time later. it was that amazing and life-changing.
tricky have so amazed performances. he sound like ghost. the way he move on sound he's music. it's art violence and love at the same time. he givs next level to art music.
Yeah The Downward Spiral's awesome. Tricky's beats are mostly reggae/ dub/ hip hop in structure with unusual production choices. Some are straight up samples from old soul r&b tracks ala "Hell Is Round The Corner"
For years I was looking for a song with the lyrics, "I met a christian christian man" & that's how I kept looking for the song. I had this CD as a teen and forgot the name of the song.
Just stumbled on this from looking up Public Enemy's "Black Steel". I remember hearing about Tricky back in the 90's but never followed him. It was just so much good music to listen to back then.
That bassist is so cool. She is an Amazon, too. I remember her towering over everyone when I saw her on this tour. (Then again, I may have had a contact buzz from whatever Tricky was smoking on stage.)
Thank you all involved with the making of this song it got me through the worst and I hope it keeps going through those that need it....thanks Tricky. Much love forever.❤
I wonder why he bowed out & didn't do the rest of the vocals? The "you & me? What does that mean?" part is my favorite but he walks off in his hazel daze instead...
If you listen to the studio version, I think Tricky recorded the vocals at about 3x speed, because on the album it sounds like his voice is starting to get discontinuous, like things do when you slow them way down on a computer without affecting the pitch. Just one of the million tiny things about this song that make it great.

pathetic to see so little views on this undeniable gem...the sidewinding sex that is this Tricky sound, surreptitious then delicious. flagrant fanning of dying flames. i am grateful for men like Adrian who hear it differently than i.
Anyone still here in 2024?

that bass has enough torque to jumpstart a dead planet.
That has to be the best comment I have ever read! :)
Oh my God, this comment! ❤️❤️❤️

At the age of 17 this song changed my life. It was a gateway drug to all things alternative and unconventional. Thanks Tricky.
My experience at 37
Same.. I’m 44.. got this album the day it came out.. life changing with psychedelics
Bro. I feel you!! Rest in peace PRECIOUS Anthony Nicolas Matthews. I think he still is underrated ❤

If you were lucky enough to find this in the 90s and step thru that door .
It was never the same , so special .
I once knew a girl named Anja.
i never gave back her that Tricky Cassette.
I one knew a guy name Mitchell.
I never gave back that Tricky CD
Bass is deeper than space. WTF. The darkest Trip Hop masterpiece 👊

Rest In Peace to his daughter. Tricky I will always love you.
Damn. I didn’t know that... that just hurt so damn hard reading this. I know a few of his people and didn’t even know this.
Martina's daughter too.
I was at this show. Wow.
I was looking for this. I was there that day in the audience. I was blown away. I saw them open for PJ Harvey in 1995 in London. Thanks!
you are too lucky
I was looking for any footage from this same year at Newport Music in Columbus. Amazing show, I still think about it sometimes all this time later. it was that amazing and life-changing.
Tricky was so far ahead of his time that we still ain’t ready
2:40 - 2:44
I love how that bass player moves. So hypnotic.
who is she?
this song is like a dream
Bass player is Carrie Melbourne and yes she is an official badass
Nothing moves me anymore but this still does
We got some shit for u then
I saw this on PBS in 1998 when it first came out--when I first heard Tricky. Also, Ani Difranco was on same show.
tricky have so amazed performances. he sound like ghost. the way he move on sound he's music. it's art violence and love at the same time. he givs next level to art music.
That is the triphoppest bass line of all trip hop
The composition of his music is so unique. I'd really love to see some behind the scenes footage of their production sessions.
Much love, fellow fan. :)
Yeah The Downward Spiral's awesome. Tricky's beats are mostly reggae/ dub/ hip hop in structure with unusual production choices. Some are straight up samples from old soul r&b tracks ala "Hell Is Round The Corner"
Still remember the day I bought this album. Easily one of the best discs of the 1990s -- and prolly the following 30 or 40 years, for that matter.
i remember how timeless that felt instantly after coming out and 20 years later still one my fav tunes.
I went to Helsinki, Finland partly because of this groove being stuck in my head. It was all that!
Pre -milenium tension... Timeless!!!
For years I was looking for a song with the lyrics, "I met a christian christian man" & that's how I kept looking for the song. I had this CD as a teen and forgot the name of the song.
Sorry, you lost a lot of time without Tricky ;(
I met a Christian in Kristiansand 😊
Hot bass
Волшебно! Я прямо на три минуты попал в свой студенческий 98 год. Спасибо!
I taped this off PBS back in the 90's on my VHS, it came on after red dwarf. memories.
Just stumbled on this from looking up Public Enemy's "Black Steel". I remember hearing about Tricky back in the 90's but never followed him. It was just so much good music to listen to back then.
right?!?! what happened?
Willie Brown check out David Bowie Andy Warhol 1997
Tricky performed on the festival called Quart in Norway in 1995. The town was Kristiansand (litterally christian sands) Greeting from Norway!
Sample "Cause it's cool when you cause a cozy condition" from La Di Da Di - Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh
They are so high.
Amazing. Draws you in from the first baseline. Pure emotional beauty

the live version sounds tight as hell. Thanks.

Great Episode(!) from a Great Show, shame that they do not show Sessions @ West 54th anymore!
I think I was 10 or 11 when this came out, and I was hooked. That bass......shiiiiiit. Don't hear anything like this now.
