@@YMDBass I actually ran into them at AMC 30 in Houston and we watched the Phantom Menace together. I’m pretty sure this is the same day you are talking about.
Every member of NFG has some sort of background in the hardcore scene, so these guys have the ability to get heavy when they want. They pretty much invented the "easycore" genre with their song "At Least I'm Known For Something". Their side project, ISHC, is further proof of their heavier side as well.
If I hadn’t seen them in 99 or 2000 with face to face and saves the day I never would have given them the time of day but because they had those roots in hardcore they got a pass and they earned it. I loved everything until Radio Surgery and then I gave up on the genre
I remember at the height of my love for this song, seeing NFG, Midtown and Blink-182 in Idaho back in middle school, and going crazy right when Ian went into that bass line. ❤
Others might say "Dressed to Kill" or "My Friends Over You," but to me, when I heard people mention New Found Glory, this song comes to mind instantly along with "Hit or Miss." I fell in love with the song since I heard it first time decades ago... and I'm not even a bassist! An example of a good songwriting in pop punk.
I fucking loved this record. It wasn't until I was like 15 that I started getting shit from my other punker friends and I had to go off the radar with how much I liked it. The punk scene was always full of very finicky dickheads that told you what you could and couldn't like. What was and wasn't "punk" enough. For my era, it was emo and pop punk. Things are a lot better now. You get older and realize, fuck everyone... I like what I like. I like New Found Glory.
Yeah, I can relate to this getting into the metal circles with a lot of gatekeeping going on. I remember getting flack for listening to 90s pop stuff one time. Who gives a shit? I like what I like. Keep that attitude forever! 👏
Bob I'm guessing youre in my age range (i just turned 40). That was my experience as well. I got into green day first at 9, then the Ramones, sex pistols, clash and transitioned to screeching weasel, the queers, and etc. And that scene fuckin HATED what they considered "not punk." It really messed with my young sense of self and acceptance and i was really closed minded musically. NFG, the starting line, drive thru records basically broke me out of that and reminded me to embrace the truth that the first music I embraced as my own was actually musicals/musical theatre and pop.
NFG has been such a consistent band for so damn long. Over the next couple albums their sound became heavier and much more hardcore with big breakdowns. An awesome evolution of their sound while maintaining the pop-punk roots. Def recommend continuing with NFG, and would love to see a reaction to "At Least Im Known For Something"!
It's no international superheroes of hardcore! Seriously though all the guys came from the Florida hardcore scene, hell Chad was in Shai hulud. For a "pop punk" band, they damn sure have roots in the harder punk scene. Also, their live show goes way harder than any pop punk band deserves to go.
I remember reading an intwrview with their bassist saying something to the effect of "I could play complicated basslines but I'd rather play something I can jump around and interact with the fans"
The interesting thing about these pop punk bands is how some of their songwriting evolved so quickly. NFG started as a melodic hardcore band, quickly dialed in that signature pop punk sound, and by their second album it’s all catchy ear worms like this.

New Found Glory is a band I've been aware of since the early 2000's here and there but in a weird way, they are kinda less popular compared to a lot of other similar Pop Punk and Emo bands that would come around even in the same years... they are often credited for not just being Pop Punk but a type of Poppy Hardcore and Emo-ish songs. if you want more hardcore you can lisen to "Everycing sucks" from "Active ingrediants". The band is from 1997 and they have only 57 listeners on spotify.
Gotta check out ‘Sonny’ by them!
Tbh I always wished I had done a proper deep dive into their stuff but always end up not doing it... and it is 25 years later, and I keep hearing their name every once in awhile to say... oh yeah, I think I sorta liked some of their songs
