Watching your videos, really enjoy them. I have changed from double bass to bass guitar, so learning the different finger and pick styles. 1 question.. what isbthe 5 string you have in most of your videos
I'm not even a bass player but I've absolutely been loving what you've been doing here. I grew up listening to all these punk bands and seeing your reaction to these songs first listen just brings me right back to those times. Much appreciated
Love the channel!!! New viewer and I’m hooked. Not a popular band, but you should really check out the song Doing Better by Shorthanded. I’d really love to hear your feedback on it.
Disconnected is easily one of the best written bass lines in punk. So simple, so catchy. Loved it when I was young, then played it for my young kids 25+ years later. My 4 year old daughter memorized the melody after one listen and my 2 year old son picks up my bass and hands it to me expecting to hear the intro. Scott Shiflett on later Face to Face has the more aggressive and technically impressive lines, but Matt Riddle had some great ones that absolutely made the songs killer. Disconnected is a pop master piece, IMO.
Walk the walk is a good one, but I love the way the bass in Disconnected fits into the mix of the song (on either version) and is a little less straight forward. The bridge part mixes things up really nicely as well. It's less in your face, but still a huge part of the song - massively catchy. Similar to Velocity off of Big Choice. Round and mellow melody which then dumps into the rhythm with the driving but clanky finger tone that immediately makes the bass more percussive and the whole song blast forward. Great dynamics, which the self titled album is lacking simply because it's compressed against the limiter nearly the whole time. The tone on either Don't Turn Away or Big Choice is less refined -and arguably very low fi in the case of Don't Turn Away - but a perfect example of how less can be good in some cases too. Great textures that aren't exactly typical, even for the era. IMO of course....
I started playing guitar as a teenager but always wanted to be a bassist and this channel, and the community, makes me pick up my bass more often than my guitars these days haha
Propagandhi is a great punk band and I think Todd Kowalski is an underrated bass player. Todd first appeared on Propagandhi's Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes album, before that John K. Samson, of The Weakerthans fame, played bass. Night Letters off of Supporting Caste is worth checking out as is Cut Into the Earth off of Potemkin City Limits. Easily my favorite punk band and it's not even close.
“Let’s do both.” This is why we like the channel so much. Separately, you definitely keep giving me more stuff to learn. I’m still trying to learn “The Horse” lol Add: Also, you should check out “Cool to be You” by the Descendants.
The Vandals man. The Vandals. Anarchy Burger, Pirates Life, Viking Suit, It's a Fact, But Then She Spoke, Ape Drape, People That Are Going to Hell, Cafe 405. The list goes on.
It's so great you're doing all these punk bands. No one does this in analysis/reaction videos, it's always the same stuff from other channels. Yay for you!
Agreed. You have punk 'historians' who just talk about the bands, but no one is breaking down the songs...except breh here. I hope more of this type of thing happens.
You should definitely check out ALL for more Karl Alvarez madness. In fact, they are essentially the Descendents with a different lead singer, formed out of a desire for the band to continue on after Milo left to focus on getting his master's degree in biochemistry. World's on Heroin is definitely the track to check out.
Highly recommend checking out Minutemen, especially some of the stuff on their third album, Double Nickels on The Dime. Mike Watt is one of the most out-there players in punk. And they actually put out Descendents' first album on their label New Alliance.
The magic in what you’re doing is that we are truly seeing you introduced and excited about the tunes that have been our EVERYTHING for so long. Your ability to break this all down in a simple and relateable way is refreshing too. Keep going. Punk rules and thanks for shining some additional light on the quality of the bands and the musicians.
No way! Back in college, I got to intern at The Blasting Room Studios in Colorado where most of the Descendents’ albums were recorded! The drummer, Bill Stevenson owns the studio and is a super nice dude
Back in college I wrote Milo Aukerman when he was working at DuPont as a biochemist (I was studying at Penn and he had done some postdoc there, which is maybe how I had his email? I don't remember as it was 20 years ago). I had some questions about careers/passions and he graciously took time out to write me a thoughtful reply. It was a little gesture from a personal hero of mine from when I was even younger and I still think about it.
Dude, I've been listening to punkrock for 30 years.. it's honestly so cool to see you react to all this for the 1st time and honestly seem to be into it! Welcome, friend! Check out Roger Lima from Less Than Jake. If you're not familiar, it's skate kid, ska/punk. Dude can play!
Milo was recorded when they were 18-19 years old. "Im the one" was recorded 13 years later and you can hear the seasoned musicianship in the recording compared to the raw adolescence angst in the first album and thats what makes the first album so good.
Yeah, I know everyone loves Milo, but for me the signature Descendants sound is that harmonically unpredictable song structure, which was something they perfected later. I'd say the same thing about Ten Foot Pole, everyone liked Scott's vocals, but the locked up riffs and manic beat changes that made TFP unique, only really developed after Rev.
Yessssss, so glad this journey into discovering punk rock has finally taken you to the descendents. Love that you can appreciate the often overlooked talent in the genre
Have really been enjoying all of these. You first got me with the Rancid react and kept me coming back with the Op Ivy, NOFX, and Descendents. All bands that were a huge part of my youth and would help shape the man I would become. Glad to see these bands getting their just desserts. Punk often gets overlooked but it really is an amazing genre with so many amazing songs and bands.
It’s insanely gratifying to see punk rock appreciated for all its complexity and musicality. Back in the day when you’d play along with an album, only you and the band really knew how creative and well-written these punk songs were..it’s amazing we have the technology to be able to share this great analysis w the internet for all musicians and fans to learn and grow from. Just never thought that anyone would ever care to go back and appreciate my music from high school and how awesome was then and still it is. Fucking phenomenal service you’re doing w these videos man. Love it!
It’s Karl and Bill together that are so unique and unmatched. Stephen is incredible in his own right….they’re a 3 piece at the end of the day, so impressive.
I've commented many times before, but I love your videos because it's like having a friend that has never heard punk rock before and is open to all of my suggestions. Keep doing what you do!
It makes me so happy seeing you just delighted in hearing these amazing punk tracks that I grew up with. Love seeing people light up when they enjoy and hear good punk. :D
Check out Street light Menifesto's "Somewhere in the between" great album all around and the bassist is all-over that fret board throught their typical 3-4 minute songs- One of the bass players I wish I could sound like.
I got to hang out with Klaus and East Bay Ray one night back at their Hotel and party after the show. Klaus is the coolest punker I know. His iPod had a ton of eclectic music from hip hop to Kermit the frog lol
I look forward to your videos. Keep it up 🤟 Bad Brains - Banned in DC Cigar - Classic You Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia SNFU - She’s not on the menu Lag wagon - Give it back
It brings me so much joy to watch you discover all these great punk songs for the first time. Makes me remember what it was like for myself, and why it made me want to become a bass player in the first place 👏👏👏👏
‘Can’t Stand the Rezillos’ by the Rezillos is a super underrated early punk album where the bass drives the entire album. One of my all time favorites. Probably not popular enough for this channel, but if you give a listen I’m pretty sure you’ll dig it.
Ah yes, the fathers of pop punk. Both Tony and Karl are absolute beasts. Funny note, the main songwriter for this band is actually their drummer, Bill Stevenson, so both the bass and drums take the leading role on a lot of their tunes. There's a great documentary about the band called "Filmage". Once again, great vid.
I remember seeing the Desendents a few years ago and being blown away by just how fast Karl could play from the start of the show to the final note! The entire band are the gold standard in their respective roles but…wow!
Absolutely love that you covered both of these songs! Descendants are an incredible band. Both bass players are super talented and both songs are incredible in their own aspects. Loved hearing your breakdown and comparison on them. Myage definitely gets stuck in my head when I hear it as well. EDIT: I ran into an old friend of mine in the comment section of your video reaction on Fugazi Waiting Room! He lives in another state than I do and is an incredibly talented bass player. Miss you @sugarcell4580
The one thing I genuinely hope comes out of this punk rock journey you're going on is that you find a band or two that makes into your personal music collection.
I'm The One was the song that acknowledged me WHAT was a bass and It's sound. Bought this album in 1998 when I was only 9 and this got me completely crazy. Have this album cover tattooed and I still love it front to back. Great video as usual!
i like these not only for your take on them and the education you apply to listening, but also for you to hear them all for the first time and how they might change how you look at music going forward. its way more "accessible" now than when i got into them, but punk musicians are among the pinnacle of creatives and out of the box thinking and its also a lot of that magic that made bands like nirvana so great to those who first heard them back in the 90s. i think its easy to look at punk on the surface as an outsider and think its cheap and snotty and uneducated music. but i i also think you'll agree its the complete opposite (genius often hiding in horrible quality recordings) its always been there and i applaud you for opening the door and taking a look in.
You're really killing this channel man. Fantastic song choices, perfect video lengths, you seem to be genuinely enjoying the music and no over the top fake personality. Cant wait for the next episode. Please listen to The Inbreds - Any Sense Of Time A Canadian two piece band featuring a singer/bassist with a drummer. This is their biggest single, very bass driven.
I'll probably never pick up a bass, but i still love the breakdowns of what's happening. I like that while focusing on bass, you'll also touch on other things going on in the song. Good stuff.
Great analysis! Milo goes to college was truly a groundbreaking record. I recommend it to anyone with even a slight interest in punk. Also, RKL - "Betrayed". RKL will really blow your mind if you are getting into punk bassists. It's something else entirely.
@@LowEndUniversity Oh word!! I should've known! So sick for you to be giving these guys to be getting this kind of representation. Punk musicianship is so often overlooked, which I get. There're some real absolute monsters in there. You'll hear praise ad nauseum for Primus and Tool and Rush, rightfully so, but no one ever talks about RKL and NOFX. I'm seriously stoked about this.
Justin from Tool couldn’t remotely do what Joe does in RKL. And Justin is one of my biggest influences. I don’t even mean that disrespectfully. I, too, have loved being enlightened on the insane musicianship buried deep within these punk genres. Pretty life-changing finding out about them on the channel!
After "Milo goes to college", Milo the singer did go to college and the Descendents went on a long hiatus where the rest of the band played as ALL with a different singer. So if you want more Karl, check ALL.
Oh wow. Thanks for clarifying that! I’ve been confused just glazing through comments seeing they’re the same band, but they aren’t, etc etc - makes sense! Almost like a RATM / Audioslave scenario.
@@LowEndUniversity no problem! My favourite thing about this is that for the longeet time now both bands coexist, and whether a song ends up as a descendants or an All song depends more on whichever band happens to record an album next more than anything else
really love what you're doing there! Putting the light on punk rock bass players is something we don't see often from non-punk musicians, so its a real pleasure to see you do that and enjoy it moreover! As for Karl Alvarez, "I'm the One" is great, but doesn't scratch the surface of what he is really capable of, technically and melodicaly. I think turnin to ALL ("Honey Peeps" for example, as suggested in another comment) whould be a great way to discover more from him, while still listening to a new band (plus the ALL/descendents story is quite interesting IMO)
I've know these songs from them being released., I've loved the Descendents from the early 1980's. I really appreciate your critique which has made me love the song so much more understanding the depth of it. I guess as we learn and understand music as you get older there is so much depth to things that you missed at the time. Thank you. Cheers from Australia..
I've been following your account for a while, but it has gotten so much better since you've been reviewing all these punk songs. Please keep them coming! Maybe try "Disconnected" by Face to Face.
My man, thanks for pointing me towards this video. Solid review and can't go wrong with either era of Descendents. Appreciate your efforts. You mentioned exploring more of Karl Alvarez's playing. He spent some early days playing in a hardcore punk band from Utah called Massacre Guys with Stephen Egerton (precursor to Descendents). These two have been playing music together for longer than most people realize. MG is what you'd expect from an early 80's hardcore punk band, but still a super fun listen nonetheless. I'd recommend the track "Hunted" from their Behind the 8 Ball EP -- 45 seconds of pure intensity.
Really been enjoying these videos. Nice seeing someone not really versed in punk breaking these things down to show how complex the genre can actually be.
Love the channel and the variety. Keep up the great work and check out 100 Proof by 88 Fingers Louie. Great tone with a wicked bass solo. Joe Principe was their bassist who is now with Rise Against. In fact the original lineup of Rise Against was basically just 88 Fingers Louie with a different vocalist.
Love the punk content, you got yourself a new subscriber. Have you done Streetlight Manifesto yet? I’m not the biggest ska fan but that band is different. Criminally underrated bass player.
Hi again, loving the analysis of these videos. As someone who grew up with this music this was normal in my head and now with you breaking them down I'm realizing how much it's not the beaten path of how you write music. Thanks!
Descedents, another of my favorite bands. Great stuff! You gotta do Mike Watt, punk's greatest bassist. "Joe McCarthy's Ghost," "The Glory of Man," "Viet Nam," "Sickles and Hammers," "Fascist"...there are so many incredible Minutemen songs.
Dude you are killing it , as an older guy its fun to see young people discover the punk Music. Speaking of Descendants , please check out and review " Victim of me " Or Perhaps you are ready for Face to Face , try walk the walk . would love to see this .
The band ALL (same band with other vocal) has amazing bass lines. "The World's on Heroin" and "Honey Peeps" are my favorites, you could take a look at those!
Another time asking for The Ataris - Teenage Riot. I used to have so much fun playing this bassline! This channel has me looking at bass guitars on Marketplace. I haven't played since I was a teen and I'm 36 now haha
Dooood, I first plucked a bass in a garage punk band in 1994. I’m now I’m 45, married w/ kids, and I’m still playing the same sh!t because it’s so fun, all on a $20 garage sale kit-made imitation P-bass. Do it.
@@LowEndUniversity I can't wait! It's so tempting but it's finding the space in our tiny house haha. I don't think my wife would be super impressed. It's not stopping me from keeping my eye open for a bargain though ;)
Karl Alvarez is such a genius, and your channel is my favorite on YT at the moment. Now it's time to check out All - basically Descendents with different singer(s), Karl being the longest lasting bass player in it.
This was great! The Low End Fam has been turning me onto some really great basslines the last month I absolutely love it! And huge congrats on your sub count Mark it’s climbing up there!! So happy to see this!! Almost 10k views in 12 hrs YAS!! I’m literally smiling for you and your channel brother!!

Face to Face - Disconnected. Easily top 10 best punk bass tracks.
Yes, this. ✅
Walk the walk is a better signature baseline in my opinion. But disconnected is a real good song indeed!!

I'll probably never pick up a bass, but i still love the breakdowns of what's happening. I like that while focusing on bass, you'll also touch on other things going on in the song. Good stuff.
FIRECRACKER by STRUNG OUT!!! That is all 😂
I second this!! Strung out blend punk rock with metal. I think he will totally dig the sound
Agreed...Jim was a genius...lost way 2 early...
Yes Firecracker. Strung Out is sooo good.
I would love to see a breakdown like this of Karl Alvarez in ALL’s “Scary Sad” off of Allroys Revenge
Second 88 fingers louie - 100 proof
Great band and if you didn't know they pretty much became Rise Against.
Ned's atomic dustbin has 2 bass players. Would like to hear your opinion on them.
Both Tony Lombardo and Karl Alvarez played some incredible lines!!!
Subbed... There are so many punk groups that have a wicked bass line in them
Thanks for the sub, friend! I agree!
They’re touring this April with circle jerks and adolescents. Going to be such a great show. These guys still have it.
MXPX - Vacation. I love that bass
Yep, this one is on my “Bass Play-Alongs” playlist. It is so fun!
Yep, Myage got my playing bass at 13. Even in my late 40's I still noodle around on that song
Milo Goes To College is one of the greatest punk albums of all time. Every song is perfect.
Thanks for highlighting the incredible musicianship hidden in plain sight in punk rock. Really good content!
Myage has such warm basslines. I love these simple yet catchy ones.
I love the punk run you are on with these punk songs.
The Jam- Down in the Tube Station at Midnight. Bruce Foxton is an absolute beast!
Great analysis! Milo goes to college was truly a groundbreaking record. I recommend it to anyone with even a slight interest in punk. Also, RKL - "Betrayed". RKL will really blow your mind if you are getting into punk bassists. It's something else entirely.
Thanks so much for that! I loved RKL, I did a video recently on them here: ruclips.net/video/9EDYbdixIIw/видео.html
Streetlight manifesto is going to be right up your alley
They’re next!!
Just found you, and you're exploring my childhood. Sony yellow Walkman and Descendents cassetes
Thank you mate!! I am so glad that you liked the good taste of Karl!! He is one my favourite bass players ever!!!
Keep the good job coming!!!
Now you need to listen to Hot Water Music!! Awesome musical talent!!
I've been following your account for a while, but it has gotten so much better since you've been reviewing all these punk songs. Please keep them coming! Maybe try "Disconnected" by Face to Face.
Thanks so much Dustin! Really appreciate you. I’ve for F2F on the list!
@@LowEndUniversity Debt is another great song from Face to Face with great bass licks
I love Tony... and Karl, omg he does reallt complex stuff and so fast...
I played myage back in the 80's loved that song, saw them live 2 times back then.
STOKED YOU GOT TO DESCENDENTS! VERY COOL TO SEE YOU COMPARE BOTH BASS PLAYERS IN 1 VIDEO!
I love the bass player from 7 Seconds. Might be worth a listen
Really been enjoying these videos. Nice seeing someone not really versed in punk breaking these things down to show how complex the genre can actually be.
Love see you dissect all the tunes from my life
Check out Ned's atomic dustbin song "throwing things" or "until you find out". Their whole album God Fodder is good.
Love the channel and the variety. Keep up the great work and check out 100 Proof by 88 Fingers Louie. Great tone with a wicked bass solo. Joe Principe was their bassist who is now with Rise Against. In fact the original lineup of Rise Against was basically just 88 Fingers Louie with a different vocalist.
love this channel!!!
Love the punk content, you got yourself a new subscriber. Have you done Streetlight Manifesto yet? I’m not the biggest ska fan but that band is different. Criminally underrated bass player.
Thanks! They’re up next, actually!
Their original bassist Josh was playing a fretless for his time with the band.
My all time favorite band. My age is all down strokes. He used to practice with a weight on his wrist.
Hi again, loving the analysis of these videos. As someone who grew up with this music this was normal in my head and now with you breaking them down I'm realizing how much it's not the beaten path of how you write music. Thanks!
Love it. Thank you!
“Maybe Partying Will Help” too.
Or even his firehose days like 'brave captain'
Yes!!
Minutemen and Social Distortion was my first show. Huge Firehose fan too. Mike Watt fucks!
You need to do some Mike Watt....both minutemen and firehose both fucking rule
Got to see them a few years ago in KC. Great show and I ran into them later. We were staying at the same hotel.
Please do Bent But Not Broken by Face To Face! Scott Shiflett is a monster.
I 2nd this!! Face To Face deserve some noteage.
Anything with Scott Shiflett would be amazing.
YES!!!
Dude you are killing it , as an older guy its fun to see young people discover the punk Music. Speaking of Descendants , please check out and review " Victim of me " Or Perhaps you are ready for Face to Face , try walk the walk . would love to see this .
Would love to see him do any of Scott Shiflett's play through videos.
I’ve recommend to you Cigar - no more waiting, blow your mind for sure! a great bass solo 😮💨
The band ALL (same band with other vocal) has amazing bass lines. "The World's on Heroin" and "Honey Peeps" are my favorites, you could take a look at those!
I’d love to see anything by Hot Water Music. Jason Black was always my favourite bass player growing up.
Descendents also perform as ALL with a different lead singer. Check out the ALL - Mass Nerder album, particularly a track called Perfection.
Great choice.
Your channel is becoming very exciting (for a lack of another comment lol)
Totally digging all of this 🤘😀🤘
Awesome! Thank you!
Another time asking for The Ataris - Teenage Riot. I used to have so much fun playing this bassline! This channel has me looking at bass guitars on Marketplace. I haven't played since I was a teen and I'm 36 now haha
Hey man, I’ve got them written down! Don’t worry! And, totally buy one and get back into it!! I think you’ll be glad you did 🤩
Dooood, I first plucked a bass in a garage punk band in 1994.
Try checking out the Pixies. Maybe track "Hey" or "Gigantic"
Karl Alvarez is such a genius, and your channel is my favorite on YT at the moment. Now it's time to check out All - basically Descendents with different singer(s), Karl being the longest lasting bass player in it.
500 channels by choking victim that bass line is definitely killer.
Cheers man!! I’m having so much fun, and you guys are the sole reason why! 🙏🏼☺️
@@LowEndUniversity thank you man! Luv man and all your work!! Your easily one of the best players I’ve ever heard and to be able to connect with you makes me feel so happy! Your one of the reasons I remembered how bad I miss my Thumb bass
