    His only weaknesses, as far as I can tell, are a lack of a super-attack (not that he needs it) and relatively low defense. But he's still a nightmare to fight.
    Edit: Biggest glitches from my own tests are (a) you can't use his lightning bolt or stalagmite spears moves as the player - he'll do the animation, but the projectiles won't appear; (b) the teleport direction is random, unlike the computer's teleport, which always goes right through you; and (c) Archmage vs. Archmage is a particular slogfest, since they're immune to each other's magic, and can only be hurt with the staff attack.

      He's an absolute monster. One of the single most infuriating bosses in existence, and the reason I didn't go back to this game for years. Pretty fun to play as though, I won't deny.

    XD awww man I would have never seen you doing this video, hahaha, this game just has a certain appeal to it, and not gonna lie the beginning OST for the first 3 or 4 rounds sounds like the beginning of a good disco song, and who can forget those super throws

      There definitely is a certain appeal to the game, and I've grown to appreciate it somewhat in the years since I first played it. Extremely imaginative if nothing else. Also, good disco is right up my alley, but even I find the OST in this game a bit too repetitive, despite the game having some really good sound design for 1991.

      True , but given the time and that era of gaming don't think people paid too much mind to the OST at the time, nowadays with composers and soundtrack music has come up to be important in a game

      OSTs developed pretty quickly when it came to games, it must be said, particularly by the end of the 80s and into the 90s. Even with 80s arcade titles, Outrun and Super Hang-On still have some of the best music I've ever heard from games. What's more, by this point in 1991 we'd seen the release of Ys Books 1 and 2 for the PC Engine CD, with featured some pretty incredible music for a console title, with my personal favourite being "To make the End of Battle". A year or two later as well, Streets of Rage 2 would release with its incredible soundtrack orchestrated by Yuzo Koshiro (even if most tracks were ultimately plagiarised).
      With arcade games it's a little different I suppose (you couldn't hear the music half the time anyway, from what I personally recall), but arcade games did start to get some great soundtracks really quickly. Street Fighter 2 and Fatal Fury were both released in the same year as this game and had some fantastic sound design, with Ken and Guile's themes in SFII, and Michael Max and Geese's themes in Fatal Fury being standouts. My point is that OSTs were already pretty important by the time of Mutant Fighter's release, and in fact I think arcade composers really tried their hardest during the 90s, particularly when it came to fighting games.

      It's one of those games which sticks with you, that's for sure. And indeed, it was Cubex who helped me to remember it after all these years. For better or worse.

    Not sure how you're getting these mods. Could you do playable bosses for Hippodrome? This game (Mutant Fighter) is its sequel and it's the same Dev

      All this stuff is from years back by this point, usually from links to now dead websites and the like (such is the way of the internet I guess). Yumeji is a relatively obscure but extensive Japanese hacker who made fantastic hacks for a ton of arcade fighting games. He even has an official RUclips channel you can find here: ruclips.net/channel/UCEekYMSmw9A57AAQG6gU9YQ
      As for Hippodrome, I don't think it would be possible with my skills personally. For solely single-player games, the inability to change around values means I couldn't do much with the manual-hacking I tend to do. A skilled modder could change things around, but I don't actually know the first thing about that kind of stuff, and those who do know refuse to share their methods.

    this reminds me of that abomination of beast wrestler on the sega genesis but not so shitty

    • @AdmiralMcFish
      @AdmiralMcFish  8 лет назад

      Oh man, I'd forgotten about Beast Wrestler. This game is a lot better than Beast Wrestler, that's for sure. Mutant Fighter is tedious, and flawed in some regards, but not really a terrible game on the whole. The main problems are that the AI is pretty broken, and matches take far too long. Beast Wrestler on the other hand is just worthless.

    I really don't know what to say about Mutant Fighter. It was the first arcade game (and the first fighting game, also) that I played with my older brother back in 1993 or 1994. I wouldn't be able to make an analysis as you did, once I love everything in this game: the characters, the atmosphere, the music (I downloaded the tracks), even the terrible gameplay and unbalanced bosses that you pointed. I laughed reading your review, thinking that love is really blind. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Nostalgia is like that. I absolutely adore the Neo Geo game Ninja Combat, just because I used to play it all the time in the arcades. In hindsight it's really not that good, but I love it anyhow.
      As for Mutant Fighter, I was surprised to learn that TONS of people are still quite fond of it. I won't deny that it's pretty damn unique, and aesthetically-speaking I actually really like it, but I've just never cared for its gameplay.
