People asking for DIY alternatives: there are a few different well-reviewed $20 led grow lights on Amazon. A couple of those plus an inexpensive wire rack (or really any) shelf and some $1-2 faux terra cotta pots and you've got something that's more flexible, has much more capacity, and will likely give you better results.

Light is inverse square intensity so the Aerogarden is much more efficient if you don't mind adjusting it. It has a shared root bath so the self contained pods are a bit easier when it come time to clean the tank.

Marian Extejt I agree. They screwed up the plants in the Aerogarden, and are blaming the app for not paying attention to watering, and burning the plants. Seriously, these are contained gardens, not teenagers taking care of themselves. I expected better from these women.

Get the "Bounty" version of the Aerogarden. It is much larger and has a vertical extension rod that makes it much taller. Plus it is regularly on sale for around or just over $200. It is a lot easier and convenient than what they make it out to be. That tall white one that I think was called the "Click" has a light bar that is stationary which is bad. That is why that lettuce was floppy and spindly, the light needs to be much closer than that. I guess this the kind of review you get from people that don't actually know a ton about it. So if you plan to get something like this without spending a fortune, buy the Aerogarden Bounty base model and it will out perform all of these and is much larger. The reason the Edn had so many issues was likely it had bad or no seed. You need to make sure the expiration date on the package is still good. Also temperature/humidity make big impacts on the viability of the seed and whether it will germinate or not. If the pods were sitting in a hot warehouse for six months or more that could have ruined the seeds in the pods.

I love my Harvest Slim Aerogarden and bought it several years ago on sale through Macy's. I've never used an app and am not sure why it would have alerted ATK to add water constantly. That just doesn't make sense. I've recently been growing basil and it's been amazing to have the basil handy for cooking and making pesto. The plants have lasted much longer than I would have thought, too.

@@maryg.1014 Be careful which tomatoes you choose since they need to be tiny unless you build your own hydroponic system. You could try the "Dutch Bucket" technique for the tomatoes, not sure how cukes would do. But as far as the varieties of cucumbers you should get "Parthenocarpic"(not sure of spelling?) varieties which tend to look like Persian/Japanese cukes because they don't need to be pollinated or hand pollinated. I have an AeroGarden Harvest, and it's amazing - easy (no app needed), and great yield. The only thing that grows tall is the basil; everything else gets along nicely. Their cherry tomatoes are yummy & the plants are quite hardy. IDK why this unit seemed difficult to you - maybe the app made it harder?
The Click & Grow looks nice, but it's huge! both its footprint and clearance for height.

my top pick is the aerogarden i have one and its growing very well if you don't want to put in the work then don't buy a garden these are not the people that should have a garden if you will take proper care of the garden then i think you should buy the aerogarden because you can use their pods for an easy guaranteed grow (not a work free grow) or you can use the grow anything kit/ buy the baskets sponges and labels in bulk to grow your own plants with almost any seed.

Wish there was a couple DIY options tested or even a windowsill control. I'm not gonna go out and spend two hundred bucks on a fancy automatic planter when I can get the same results with the window I'm already paying rent for and a ten dollar planter. Also I can buy a desktop lamp for another ten bucks and I could probably find an indoor sun bulb for a few bucks more.
Sure, you found the best planter, but you didn't assess whether or not one of those is even necessary, which is a really important consideration considering these things are targeted at people who can't afford to garden outside.

The AeroGardens do a better job with roots for true hydroponics for continual harvesting. The Click n Grow confines the roots so these plants are very short-lived. Is there a way to test the nutritional quality and flavor of the herbs and veggies grown in some of those? I know for most plants, a LOT depends on the soil in which they're grown, especially mineral content. Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen are all easy to come by from air, water, and simple fertilizers, but minerals like magnesium, selenium, manganese, Iron, etc have to be in the soil to make it into the plant. I know it doesn't take much, only traces (hence the usual name 'trace minerals') but they are pretty important, and can vary from plant to plant.
Another good stat, and probably much easier to measure, is the time/cost factor between growing your own herbs and just buying what you need from the store.

    • @MaZEEZaM

If you're going to use it for herbs and basil, you're not going to need more unless you don't take care of your plant and it dies. You will only need to trim it and use the trimmings. You could repurpose the pod as a watering can.

the thing i've learned about basil is it needs heat and it needs pruning. also, don't fertilize it too much. if you over fertilize, it can start getting "burned," which is an expression used when plants are given way too many nutrients at once. Basil is pretty prolific without the need for extra fertilizer

All of these work on the principle that you literally 1-2 days you will thin and top the growing herbs to 1-4 inches in height. If you want a garden - plant your seeds outside. This is a mini garden and means mini plants.

Aero Gardens will grow regular lettuces and herbs. And the roots are healthy so can be transplanted outside if you are lucky enough to have a garden plot outside. My high mountain climate makes outdoor gardening difficult for any but the most robust plants that will have a harvest in less than 3-4 months depending on first frost. . Using Aero-Gardens in Spring for germination adds about 6 weeks to growing season if the frosts allow.

The seeds sprouting or not sprouting has absolutely nothing to do with how good the indoor garden is, and I'd buy the seeds I wanted, not what the company offers. You can bet the company isn't choosing the variety based on flavor.
There is no way I'd buy an indoor grow system with all those electronics. It's almost a forgone conclusion that they're going to fail in under 3 years, and good luck getting replacement parts.
Also, when constant water exposure is involved, plastic is better than any metal except stainless steel (and even then only if it's high quality stainless).

hell, peat pellet, a cheapo lamp, heating mats and a good bulb and then move them to even cheapo cloth pots with potting soil and manure.
Peat pellets are like $10 for 50
      lamp is $15
bulb are $7 for a pack of 5
      heat mat is $12
      potting mix $6
      black kow manure $5
      cloth pots are $17 for 12 3-gallon
      all together it's $72
Tack on another 15 or 30 for one or two more lamps and you've got everything needed for a garden and most of the stuff is optional for helping seedlings germinate, you can nix the mat, and peat pellets if you just want to use straight potting mix so you save 25 dollars after that.
