I am 75 years old and have heard many versions of this song. This version is by far and away the BEST ever. You capture the pure essence and soulfulness of this beautiful song like no one has. No flash, no shredding, nothing but pure tone and emotion. And I might say the best bump and grind slow dance version ever. Brings back many memories. Thanks!
I heard beck and seltzer versions and another guy who covers it with tabs but it’s really basic. This is more what I was looking for. The performance to listen to but also the fact you include how to play it is amazing
@AlexFarranGuitar my pleasure sir,the pace and mannerism of your delivery are spot on for my taste.Expeditious and concise.I wish more people were able to communicate in that way.Excellent work and fine, fine skill on the instrument.
I've been working on this song forever and I just ran across your version. Awesome. Thank you Alex! I'm 70 years old and now I think I'll finally be able to play this with your help. Very grateful and lucky to have found you! All the best. Please keep it up. Your teaching style is wonderful.
That was beautiful, Alex. I co-owned a mostly rock and roll guitar store in Boston during the 89's and 90's. We kept hearing rumors of a legend named Danny Gatton who preferred staying at home to being in the limelight. We called him up and talked him into bringing his band to Boston to play an intimate 250 capacity club for two shows. And he did it! I believe it was his first shows in years. The place was packed with guitar players. He seemed energized by the shows. He was a nice guy. I think he enjoyed himself because he he came and did a return engagement that was just as successful. His career took off from there. But, we were all heartbroken to hear the circumstances of his death. Sometimes I think we should have left him alone. It's hard to believe, but some people don't want to be stars. Danny obviously had something going on that was bigger than being a guitar hero.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the comment buddy and for sharing your heartfelt Danny story. I agree, I think he'd have been happier keeping himself busy with his car projects on that beautiful farm of his. He was such a gift to us guitar players though, and a huge source of inspiration for me. 🙏🏻
I spoke with Danny‘s mom shortly after he passed away. He had a nerve problem that was affecting his playing and was quite unwell. Danny was always very generous with his time giving me many tips when discussing guitar playing. He is missed by all. Wife and I tried to fly out of Buffalo to see him and the Hellecasters play at one show, but the airport was closed because of heavy fog, never made it. I spoke to Danny or two after and he joked it was an unfair show. It was three guitarist lingers against just one.
I've been playing acoustic guitars most of my life. I just purchased a custom Lefty telecaster. Now I have to learn how to play an electric. I play lefty guitars. I'm 73 playing at open mics. Lifetime learner. I love this song and your video is an awesome lesson for me to learn. Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort to post here on youtube. 😎
Excellent presentation. ... Boy Oh Boy, does this ever bring back the memories I Love the way you play this!!!!! I can only hope that one day I can play it as well as you. Thanks for a great job. LaMar Kemp
This version, unlike most others I've heard, never forgets the song. (I'm a melody addict) Alex shows incredible restraint, sweet harmonies, groove. While true to the original, it is fresh music to my ears. So perfect....the lesson is another ideal execution. Well done sir!
This would even give Santo & Johnny goosebumps.. I’m subscribing Alex.. I have never heard this song duplicated like this and I grew up with this music - being born in ‘44.
This is why I love this channel. I have been exposed to amazing music that I normally wouldn't seek out independently. I have learned more from this video and from working out your "Alone and Forsaken" cover than years of note-for-note rock tutorials. Your tone and feel on everything is also impeccable. Thanks!
Dude I'm 76 yr. old and this is the best i've ever seen. Never own a tele, and I'm a Gibson man. But don't currentyly own what would be called a decent guitar. I will learn to play this your styly on my little cheap "Oscar Schmidt by Washburn. I love it when someone comes along with a beautiful and simple way to play what seems to be a very complicated piece of music. Kerry from Tennessee.
Thank you Kerry, I really appreciate your comment! Glad you enjoyed it! And absolutely.. it doesn't matter what type of guitar you play it on.. just make the music sing 👌🏻
Excellent performance, great video! One of my all-time favorite Tele tunes. Over here in Canada, I have seen the great Amos Garrett performing this live several times, and there's some great RUclips videos of his versions. But of all the many great versions ever recorded, I still prefer Santo and Johnny's 1959 original because it's so beautiful and so unique.
Wow! Your lesson was sooooo good. I've always loved this song, but it always felt out of reach. This was very accessible for me as you're hitting me right where I'm at as a player. No tedious breakdowns of basic things for beginners/early intermediates, but challenging enough with all the little tidbits of what you're putting in where and why it works that I can run off and decode it it all and expand my understanding of music and playing. You may have just become my favorite RUclips guitar teacher!
Ah thanks man, I really appreciate the kind words! That's exactly where I'm pitching these lessons.. intermediate to advanced so I try to avoid tedious detail on the basics as you say. It's a hard thing to balance but I'm getting a feel for it! Thanks again buddy 🙏🏻
Learned this a couple of months ago from checking out various version. But as usual your arrangement tops them all. Can’t wait immerse my self in it! Also, as an old journeyman roots rocker still gigging. I am a member of Alex’s Patreon lessons and encourage anyone slightly interested in his lessons to join. The man is a true treasure and needs to be supported.
The playing out of the chords is sublime. It shows how complex the song really is. Absolutely gorgeous. Oh my God he just spoke and he’s British! Beautifully and intelligently spoken. Beautiful.
Thank you for this beautiful and tasteful classic. You sure know your chord theory and show us how this pays off for thoughtful players like yourself. This is sure worth "bothering with". It's never too late to learn something. And there's more here than you teach. Those rakes and the palm muting are subtle and add much.
