Ribot is superb. Alex nails the sound and teaches it in a non BS, clear manner. Not annoying like some denizens of the murky world of Yootube guitar lessons (metallic green or blue oinky, pingy Stratocasters etc. Bad art on walls. . . )
Thank you so much Alex, Marc Ribot is one of my favourite players and I'm a sucker for Tom all day! Such hard working guys. Immediately getting patreon resources with this one before I watch. I recently impressed myself and as a study nailed the intro and double stop hooks of Julian Lage's Tributary... it gets a bit bonkers down the line but I will overcome it... it's in great part thanks to becoming your passive student, so thank you for guiding me this far. I am a believer!
Thanks for the comment buddy, I really appreciate it! I’m so happy to hear that the lessons are making a positive impact on your playing! Keep up the hard work mate! 🙏🏻
Your comment of incorporating all styles of music is spot on. This particular style I find especially compelling and somewhat approachable, though I don’t hold a candle to your playing. And that’s why we so much appreciate your lessons - consistently enriching and brilliant. Thank you Alex!
I love these Ribot lessons, i've seen him live so many times (not as much as richard thompson) and i've Listened to him and Django so much that i can "hear" what you doing and actually play it.I can't say that about most of you lessons.I've said it before and will say it again, you are an amazing teacher and your playing is right up there up with my favorite guitarists. You are the king of tone and taste!
Man, you always blow me away with your comments, thank you Scott, I genuinely appreciate the kind words. Knowing what a musically discerning chap you are, if you dig it, I know I'm doing something right! 🙏🏻🧡
Your extension to the solo is something else. I love it. I think it’s really too much for the song and very indulgent but those dissonant notes from outside scales sound fantastic and make for an inspiring video.
Haha thanks buddy.. absolutely not what I would play on a record, but for the sake of providing some concepts to teach and delve into, it works just fine 👍🏻
Ahh man, you not only show us how to build the house, you give us the bricks. What a steal your patreon is! And, as Captain Beefheart has recommended, you always have a great hat on!
@@AlexFarranGuitar all is well here! And getting better as summer is approaching. Ah the euros, being an Argentina fan, the euros are a fun warm up for the real thing 🤓. And very glad Norway is not in it, given our defense quality. When we lose against Scotland... But back to practice! See you soon, will book another lesson shortly. Take care, buddy!
Where is the link for my second thumb up ? Great one Alex. Thank you so much. I’ll work this one for sure. Not only the tune, but your tone is great. I don’t know if the tone is more from the P90 or the amp, but I love it. Seeing/listening you for a few months now, I’m looking to hollow and semi hollow guitars with more and more interest… 🙌🙏
Hi ! I've just discovered your channel. Blues, soul and Tom Waits/Marc Ribot... there's everything, I mean every tasteful music, for me to fall in love and your lessons are very clear and easy to follow. Thanks a lot !
What a fantastic lesson, I love this style of music but have not found anyone who explains it so clearly. I know what I will be doing for the next month or so :-)...ok, patreon here I come!
Excellent as always Alex, thank you! I am wondering if anyone out there in Alex's guitar community could comment from experience on how close a Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin would get me to that ES 125 sound. I am lusting after a real one but $2200 for a niche guitar is probably not a trigger I am likely to pull anytime soon. I would appreciate any recomendations. Thanks!
Thanks, Alex. I'm not very familiar with Marc Ribot's playing, but this seems like a good entry point - and you always make the lesson about so much more than just learning the song. I found your solo a great complement to Marc's, building on, and digging deeper into, the tension between the notes and the chords. The 1-2-b3-5 pattern is the main motif in "Alone Together" composed in 1932 (though I'm sure it was used many times, in many tunes before that). Any particular reason that pattern is attached to Coltrane's name? All good on ya', e.
Thank you Eric, I really appreciate the comment! I’m so glad you’re getting a lot out of the lessons. Like you say, I think it’s crucial to take more than just “a new solo to learn” approach and dig into the deeper concepts around it. I’m glad to hear you enjoy that way of teaching too! To be honest, I’m not sure why Coltrane got the patterns named after him as of course, we can hear many players long before him using those cells too. Maybe he was the trendy name at the time! 🤷🏻♂️😅
Thanks for this great lesson, Alex. In bar 25, why is it that you think G7 for the whole bar in your solo even though there’s an Ab7 for the first two beats?
Sorry for the late response! On some occasions I am still outlining the Ab7, but it’s also okay to ignore it and think G7, especially with the addition of the Ab (b9) .. sometimes it’s useful to paint in broad strokes I guess.
@@AlexFarranGuitar Well looks like I'm saving up for a while or selling two other guitars. The hollow resonance is absolutely gorgeous. Btw can't wait for my first release. I think you're gonna love the solos.
I actually really like flatwounds, it’s just on this particular guitar they don’t make a good match. This guitar is already very dense, dark, middy and percussive sounding.. way more so than the es175. So the flatwounds just further congest and darken the tone. Whereas, these same strings sound beautiful on the es175 👌🏻
@@AlexFarranGuitar ah I understand. Yes, I thought I’d heard you mention your love of flatwound On a previous video. I’ll need to beat that in mind as I as thinking of putting a set on as a trial but it might need more thought .. I took back a Taylor guitar as I found it too bright … are you suggesting flatwound might improve harsh bright guitars ? But muddy already woofy dreadnoughts ..for example
They are often better for recording bc they minimize string noise during sliding, for example. But they don't last as long, so it's a splurge purchase, only for special occasions.
Rapidly getting addicted to this channel ❤
Thanks mate, glad to hear it!

Ah thanks mate, I appreciate that greatly! 🙏🏻
And I appreciate to work on songs, musicians or styles I love or some I donna but with great personalities… who think outside the box. 🎉 Many thanks

This music is the best use of the electric guitar that I know. Anything you wish to teach, I want to learn. Thanks so much
I’m glad you feel that way! I’ll certainly be teaching more in this style soon 👍🏻
What a fantastic lesson have a wonderful weekend Alex also happy father's day to you and your family ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊

Haha .. I guess I am in a way! 🤣
Love your work Alex. Always tasty stuff. Loved your last one you did on your session solo.
Thanks so much Michael, I really appreciate it! 🙏🏻
Awesome lesson Alex! Killer playing and clear and concise explanation of the theory.

Sooo freakin cool!

As always, top quality stuff. Marc Ribot has been one of my favourite guitarists for many years. Your addition to the solo was inspired!
Thank you!.. really glad you liked it! And so good to see Marc on other people’s “favourites” lists too! 👌🏻
It would be nice if you would give a lesson on the most dissonant Ribot, the Saints album for example. 😊
That’s a good idea.. I’ll put it on the list 👍🏻
Great lesson thanks 😊
My pleasure! Thanks for commenting 🙏🏻
Loved this sounds! good stuff, I didn´t know the "Coltrane patterns" till now! thanks

❤🎶❤ Gorgeous playing and guitar sound 👍 👏👏👏 Many thanks for sharing 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks my friend, glad you liked it!
That is one helluva interesting genre Alex .. 😊
Thanks George!.. wish someone would come up with a concise name for it! 🤷🏻♂️😅
I like it as it is … but I’ll need a snappy title if we are going to set up a jam session in this genre … there is not enough room on the poster
Jazz Noir works for me
haha totally!
As close as it gets I spose! ;)
