Minisforum yet again knocking it out of the park. lol. I really love how much they've been making genuinely compelling mini-pcs at such fair prices, I'm excited to see how they evolve and grow over the coming years because it sure doesn't look like they plan to stop anytime soon. lol

This CPU in a mini workstation package (Similar to the MS-01) would be a dream homelab setup, especially if they give us dual USB 4 to establish a ring network for Proxmox clustering.

I think current solution is easer to replace if your dog decide to chew on the cable or you simply not planning to use it with stand. or need to replace power brick for any reason. and its less waste considering that you will need to waste sometime one or another. psu can be used with other systems or stand as magnetick tool holder but there you put psu not compatible with anything else or thy you need magnetick tool holder with useless power brick?

While true, it's probably more expensive. And bulky. Besides, the brick heat can be shoved to the side, which is really good. And saves on heat.
When devices are small enough, i think it's just smart. Not cheating.

I would like to see more of these mini pc but flatter or flat-ish. People sometimes hang them behind a monitor to make it an all in one. I usually like to attach them on the back of a drawing monitor to make it a "portable" art computer. Kinda like a Surface but actually usable for art and not too expensive

Processing improvements have come a long way, although I think half the battle for me is how fast time is going past. I just bought a V3 and love it, running Fedora 40 and plugged in running Geekbench it gets close to 2700 single core, its almost as fast single as my 12700k, I was dismayed until I realised that Alderlake is almost 3 years old already.

The only thing I'm really bummed about is the 2.5GBE NIC. If they had made a 5/10GB port, that would have made this an absolutely awesome productivity machine. Especially since there's no PCIE slot to slap a card into.

Nobara is amazing, I just switched to it from Windows and I was amazed how smooth it was. Every Steam game I have tried just worked, some even better than on Windows (Fallout 4 for example). Even most games from Epic and GoG through Lutris worked. WoW works great too even without any official support. Nobara needs more recognition, thank you for mentioning it. I tried Pop before Nobara and the experience is not even close.

I like the videos on the high-performance mini-pcs, but I recently bought a cheap (£190) Minisforum Venus thing and it’s one hell of an upgrade from a raspberry pi. Comes with an N100/16/512GB, 2x 2.5Gb Ethernet ports and about 3 fast USB ports. For something that’s honestly idle most of the time (…even now that it’s running as an ADSB listener…) it’s pretty damn good, and I can’t justify spending large amounts on HDDs I don’t really need, although I’d love a proper NAS.

It is a strong mini pc with that CPU. From benchmarks it seems the 7945hx is pretty close to a 7900 (non x) according to cpumonkey. For audio and video work, if it really is not noisy at all, this seems like a strong option. Does it have Raid for the nvmes? I read it somewhere. Minisforum has very nice offerings at different pricepoints (barebones): 400usd, 600usd, 800usd and this one at 1000usd.
As far as Mini Pcs go, between Minisforum and Asrock (with their deskmini, deskmate and deskmeet), you have a lot of options and configurations. Can build hackintoshes if you want-need to, for 1/3 or 1/4 of the price of a comparably spec´d mac studio. Not too shabby

What about an occulink on the 5th gen M.2 slot? So upgrade the Gen 4 to a 4TB Samsung 980pro and the ram to 64GBs 5200M/T and the occulink solution? Also would you disable the discrete GC at that time? Run a full Linux OS and maybe a small OC on the chip, and you'd have, what another 5 years of life? Maybe 6? I'd like to hear your thoughts as well on fan replacement or upgrade ability. Can the platform reasonably deal with a fan replacement or will you have to be a modder and void the warranty?

No way, you got a 690 vBIOS with GOP support for UEFI. I used to have a Zotac 680 2G which I got rid of because of no GOP support.

Would be good for $900 with memory and storage, but $1200 is too much. You can get an Alienware gaming laptop with RTX 4070 for the same price.

Nice box how much does it cost?
How's the temperature sensor driver / detection status on Linux?
    Still crappy?
    #LMsensors_dumpsterfire:(
Linux really needs something like HWinfo to work and a working temperature display of CPU and GPU temps.
Windows does that right, but it spys on you. Not unlike Ubuntu mind you.
Both Windows and Linux have problems with special multi monitor setups or changing monitor setups.
In all cases you can never just right click on the active icon / window in the task bar and choose move to monitor x or even to the active monitor.
Can you make a tutorial on how to run open and free offline AI stuff on AMD GPUs and other X86 platforms?

IMO not a mini pc anymore, if you can't reasonably mount it behind your monitor it's not "mini" anymore, maybe small desktop. Mini PCs are kindof trendy atm so that's what the manufacturers are pushy, but it is just too large. I'm a lot into mini pcs, have several them, but I go for efficiency not brute power.

2:30 That 90ns RAM latency is absolutely atrocious and for comparison my 7950x (exact same CPU as the 7945hx just socketed instead of BGA) with 6200MTs RAM and Buildzoid Hinix A timmings can do 56ns latency on AIDA64 and for the price of this that cost 1300€ in my country you can buy a laptop like the MSI Alpha C17 with the same CPU and RTX 4060 so yes this thing is very overpriced for what it is.

  • @BBWahoo
