Thank you for sharing your decision making process. Just discovered you a couple of weeks ago, and am working my way through your videos. I am transitioning to a drought tolerant garden, and your videos are inspiring me to consider more succulents.
You're welcome Dana. If you have anything specific that you need help with, feel free to ask in the comments. I might have the answer, or can point you to someone or somewhere that might have the answer.
Cerriscapades What a nice reply. I am wondering about your soil. I have clay soil, and I know that I need to replace it where I plant succulents for good drainage. How deep should the new soil be? Also, I notice that you don't use perlite or sand in your soil recipe. You use some kind of soil and scoria? Could you maybe address this in a video? I apologize if you've already addressed this. I haven’t seen all of your videos yet. Thank you.
nice looking succulents! I am amazed your aeonium survived the heat -- I had quite a few of them but I didn't notice they were burning from the heat and I lost them all, I live in Zone 8a. I look forward to viewing your videos!
I find that if you give them enough time to get established, they will be strong enough to take the heat. In my area, it can get up to 35-36C (95-97F) on average during summer, peaking at 38-39C (100-102F), but they have survived that.
Cerriscapades I planted them in the spring, had a lot of growth and babies but by August they all started to lose their leaves and looked dead. I dug them out and potted them and placed them in full shade hoping the Fall will revive them. Crossing my fingers.
I am amazed you are able video and work at the same time. Very multi-talented! You need to invest a Headband Camera/Video Holder so you can work with Both Hands. Continue the great work. Love your landscape.
Thanks Donna! Good tips. I do have a tripod for my dslr but not for my phone. I have recently started using my camera to record some footage but I might also have to look for a holder for my phone that can be mounted on a tripod.
U really are a wonderful gardner. New subscriber, thank u for replying to my post yesterday. Love all the aeniums. Where r u if I may ask. I'm in California
I'm from Melbourne, Australia. In terms of weather, I think we have something similar to SoCal. Our winters are mild would be something like Zone 10b. During summer, we have occasional heat waves that go into the excess of 45°C (113°F). The worst I have experienced in the last 3 years of my stay was 50°C (122°F). But this usually lasts a day or so only before it drops again.
They grow too much because of the rain...I have them also, it rained all winter and they slurped too much water and then the branches start breaking off with the weight... I am going to keep them under cover, where I can govern how much water they consume.
Love all your videos. So glad I found you as you cover everything. Love hearing Zach in the background. With your soil do you buy a certain type and is it tan bark you mix with it?
Since I do landscapes, I tend to go really cheap. I started out by getting those $2.45 25L cheap potting mix from Bunnings, and I would buy A LOT. At least 8 bags every time. Eventually I found SoilWorx (soilworx.com.au). They have a few shops and the one at Deer Park is close to where I live. I get my soil in bulk from them. Just the regular one. Now as you have guessed, I don't use them as is. I mix them with fine pebbles. I either use 7mm river pebbles or 7mm scoria. If using them on the ground, I can get away with 3:1 and even 4:1 soil to pebbles ratio. In pots, I go 2:1 or even 1:1 for the more delicate plants. I get my pebbles from SoilWorx too, and it's really convenient for me being able to get both soil and pebbles in one place. In this video, you're probably seeing the front garden. I opted to use pine bark as mulch, but I eventually switched to rocks. The bark was good with the roses but my succulents tend to rot more with them as mulch.
Best way is to leave it and it will grow offsets. Once the offsets grow, you can chop them and plant them, and in turn they will grow their own offsets. They have very low success with leaves.
If the figures here are accurate - www.yr.no/place/United_Kingdom/England/West_Yorkshire/statistics.html then it means that you just have a slightly colder winter temperatures as in my area. In my place it does not usually go below freezing but it hovers pretty close at around 2-4C during the coldest part of winter, but sometimes dropping to somewhere between 0-1C on extreme days. At those temperatures, I would not be that concerned about keeping them out in the open. But you do have to keep an eye out for frost. If you're getting frost warnings for your area, you will need to do some preparations to reduce the chance of frost damaging them. One way is to ensure your aeoniums have proper airflow. That way moisture won't collect as much. Another but more reliable method is to put some frost protection cloth on top of them. What this does is prevent frost from forming on your plants because they will form on the cloth instead.
Beautiful.... I would love to have my garden like yours. I'll start little by little. Thank you for all the tips, Gracias!!
I'm from the Philippines. Ohh, I'm so amazed with your plants. Been watching your videos. ❤

great video!
Love your videos, I have a lot to learn. Do you worry about snakes?
Love your garden! What is the name of the small aeonium you are planting at the 20 minute mark?

What is the name of the light blue (frosted looking?) plant with big flat leaves behind the short black you’re pulling? Thank you!!
Yea please I’ll have some in uk please
Will trimming work with Aeonium suncup?
What happens to the cut stem? Will it grow another flower head or simply shrink off?
Hi Ursula. If you cut off a head, more heads will grow around the remaining stem. These are what we call offsets.
Cerriscapades
Thank you, I will try to do so
Hi. How can I propagate aeonium? Mine is still baby one but just a few leaves left at the crown. Ty

Eu quero são maguinifico parabéns 👏👍😍 amei 💞♥️

are you going to for sale some of your succulents
At some point in the future, yes. As you see in the videos, I've been propagating in bulk.
+ Cerriscapades , Interested when your ready to sale? :)
Jules Webb it will be a while since my propagations are still tiny. Hopefully by autumn they would have grown enough.
Thank you :)
Cerriscapades how do keep them during winter?
