I agree, it’s so sad what has become of this country. What is Canada like and how has your experience been as a Latino? I’ve been thinking of moving there in the future (specifically Montréal). I’m Mexican-American and I hate living in this racist, homophobic country.
@@enriquecerrosthe vast majority of Canadians do not mind being called "socialists" by our American neighbours. Canada chooses leaders who tend to have fairly progressive platforms - maybe not Scandinavian level progressive, but progressive relatively speaking nonetheless. I have never once heard a single Canadian in my life complain about having universal healthcare... It's just a matter of common sense and human decency. Racism exists in this country, just like in any other country, but even when it does exist, it's not blatantly overt. It's almost always low-key and inconspicuous. That doesn't justify it, but there's pretty much universal condemnation when a racist incident occurs - and you can bet there's no condoning from politicians or institutions. Having said that, some provinces are worse than others when it comes to this type of racism, and Quebec (with the exception of Montreal possibly) is usually perceived to be one of the worst offenders in that regard. All in all, we have our faults and bad people, but they're an OVERWHELMING minority. And we more or less trust our leaders to speak out against these behaviours and call them out swiftly and publicly. Personally, I'm very proud to be a Canadian and very happy I'm on this side of the border...
It’s ridiculous that my rights have to be determined by words written before I was born. Instead of Congress you know, passing law that guarantees my rights and doesn’t allow hateful conservatives to determine my fate every time they put a new Judge on the bench.

@Steve N not everyone needs to understand, though. i don't understand any language except english. does that mean i should go learn every language? no. that information will probably never be useful to me. it's great when people do understand, but not everyone has to try to.
What we really need is for Congress to introduce and pass actual legislation that protects civil rights. That way, we don't have to continue to depend on the courts to expand the meaning of our laws through judicial review, and we don't have to risk those rights being taken away once the makeup of the court or the White House changes

Please kick Trump out of the White House. I'm not even american, but I feel sorry for everything that has happened in the world for the past four years because of him.
I’ve never understood why laws differ from state to state so drastically in America. Your one country. Why can you all follow the same rules. You’re all citizens.
This goes back to the founding of the country in which the thirteen states saw themselves as thirteen independent states that were in a defensive alliance, not as a single nation. When that system resulted in economic and political chaos, a new constitution was drafted in the 1780s to create some harmony among the states by creating a federal government that could pass laws about certain areas of policy that would then be uniform across the states. However, law-making on all other areas of policy is reserved for the states. That's the constitution we use to this day.
An often overlooked reason is that the national government has been stuck in pretty much equal power lock that prevents anything from getting done, while more slanted state legislatures can pump out bills
It's because deep down those people are insecure about who they are as an individual and the fact that we are comfortable with who we are fills them with envy. That's the conclusion I've gathered from every homophobe I've ever interacted with. Honestly, it's kind of sad.

Instead of arguing semantics why not just make an amendment that does protect them.
That would be great! But that is very unlikely!
Amendment requires 2/3rd support of both houses of Congress, and support from atleast 3/4th of State Legislatures (that's 38 states currently). If Trump don't want to protect them, so would most of other Republicans in any Legislature. It's Highly unlikely to pass such an amendment.
I agree, this should have been handled by the legislative instead of the courts.
Since amendment to the constitution 2/3rd support of both houses of Congress, and support from atleast 3/4th of State Legislatures (that's 38 states currently), a federal law or amendment to the discrimination act of 1964 would have been better.
Court expects legislature to understand the plain meaning of every provision they made. The former merely interprets.
Why are we still arguing over the fact that anyone should be discriminated against? This is ridiculous. No one should be discriminated against or mistreated for ANY reason.

Man, as a Canadian it's incredible to see just how much the USA has regressed in the most basic things in the last 4 years.

I did NOT know this about the law in the USA. I just assumed that ALL people were protected by law against discrimination.
What we really need is for Congress to introduce and pass actual legislation that protects civil rights. That way, we don't have to continue to depend on the courts to expand the meaning of our laws through judicial review, and we don't have to risk those rights being taken away once the makeup of the court or the White House changes
