This is brilliant. The parking brake has been nothing but grief on my XC90 (caused an MOT fail last year, and then the right hand rear seized on this week forcing the car to be recovered for the first time in my ownership). The same cable has seized on my car, so this video is a massive help! Great tip on the wire for the routing.
Cheers! They are a known weak spot - even from their first mots, they were faulty… basically because we don’t use them regularly enough and they seize! This is (as far as I know) still the only vid on RUclips that shows the full overhaul start to finish… I reckon most folks must only do this job in a scrape and probably the day before an mot, so just don’t have time… thanks for watching!
Brother you just saved my bacon! Got stuck doing this job yesterday and yours is the only video I found showing removal of center console and full inspection of the brake cables and system. THANK YOU!
Brilliant video. I've been looking for a video on the complete process, especially where the 2 cables come in to the body, and where they join. Just need a dry day to do it on now :) Thanks for taking the time to make this and upload.
Hope you are well sir, i bough a XC90 manual gearbox and the parking brake are doing nothing, all relying on first gear and reverse gear. And howling noise when travelling at 30-70mph. So i changed the wheel bearing, inspect brake shoes expander and brake cable and the brake shoes adjuster mod while i'm in there. Will do other side tomorrow. This video is exactly what i need. Thank you.
Hi Dafydd! No - surprisingly, the springs are readily available from all sorts of aftermarket places and not too expensive! I got mine for £16 from euro car parts… think they called it a handbrake assembly accessories pack… the pack has enough spring to refit both rear wheels. Thanks for watching!
@@bigtalltim hi Tim I striped the brakes down today and loosened the adjuster I have also ordered some new shoes hopefully this will fix the hand brake
@damstv8717 if the cable is moving freely in the plastic sleeve, it really is that simple!… just remember to use it, or it will be just the same in a couple of years…
Great video! Just had my XC90 fail the MOT for Handbrake issues. Not sure what the actual problem is, but wondered if you knew a guide cost for the work done in this video?
Hi! Very common problem with the automatic xc90s… ok - 2 sets of prices; each is independent garage first then dealer second… typically the cable replacement runs from £150 to £300, brake shoe replacement (if they have stuck on and burned out) from £80 to about £125. If you have to have both done, approx 75% of the combined total. Definitely worth doing yourself if you can! Work in this video is in the range of £175 to £320 plus parts which are about £75 plus VAT - and expect any garage to mark that up! Call it £90 to £135 range… in short, you’d be lucky to see change from £300/£450 for the work done here.
@@bigtalltim Thanks so much for your reply. If I had the equipment I may have had a go (But I think you make a tricky job look easy! 😂). To be honest it's not as much as I thought so if it's anywhere near that I'd just be happy to have it pass the MOT!
It’s a fairly easy job, but does need a few serious tools… understand your reluctance! Find yourself an independent garage and they’ll see you right! One thing to preserve the life of your replacement - don’t rely on “p” mode and forget to use the foot brake! They always seize up through lack of use… good luck, and thanks for watching!
Cheers! I couldn’t find anything else out there that covered the centre console and cable bit, so figured it was worth taking the time; my guess is that most folks doing this job are against the clock for an annual inspection so it never makes the cut! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this detailed video! If you don't tighten the cable adjuster all the way against the circlip it would have been easier to extend the rod on the other end?
You are welcome. The adjuster needs to be tightened for the ratchet to engage, so this is unfortunately just one of those jobs where some force is required. There is a proper tool for tensioning it, but it costs hundreds of pounds… thanks for watching!
Pardon me for this question! I just bought my very first Volvo Xc90 2003 with a 2.5 Petrol. I am going to do this job aswell as it has a bad footbrake, but i am also replacing the discs and pads all the way around. I've only worked on cars with the more standard handbrake cables for handbrake levers, and with new discs and pads, the new handbrake wire does take some driving before it settles in perfectly. You reused the old disc and pads on this XC90, and you adjusted the wires, but did you adjust them according to how worn your old parts are, or is the way you did it the same when brand new discs and pads are installed aswell? I guess what i am asking about is if the footbrake will need to settle in by usage over time with brand new discs and pads? Just the same as with a regular handbrake. If yes, then should i still adjust the new footbrake cable the same as you did?
Great question! You have to adjust the wires in the way I showed with all Volvos on this platform - even those with a handbrake rather than a foot pedal like the v70 and s60. The reason for engaging the brake a little before tightening the cable is to that the operation takes up the slack, but does not over tighten (which would leave the brake always on). It will not make a difference whether the disc is new or old - good luck… let us know how it goes!!
Thank you, and you are very welcome - they really are awesome cars with just one or two issues… most of which I have covered on the channel at this point! Thanks for watching 😊
Hola. He cambiado las zapatas nuevas y en la zona de las zapatas en la rueda no hay dorma de poder ajustar mas y desde dentro del coche lo he ajustado al maximo y el freno llega al final del recorrido y no sujeta el coche. Que puede der?
This is where you need to use the pliers and spanner to separate the two halves of the connector just in front of the spreader - 36:01 you really have to force it!
I just purchased my first XC90 and the parking brake didn't hold. I said it should hold the car in gear on a level surface at the minimum and the shop literally told me I was wrong
Common problem with autos on this platform - bottom line, it should hold the car in neutral on a steep slope as a minimum - or, as you said, be able to stop the car moving if in drive… there is no point having an emergency brake that doesn’t stop the car! An easy fix at least, but a definite annual inspection fail if not addressed

Nicely done! You said to get some springs just in case any get damaged. Is that a dealer part?
