THAT was one heck of an Intro flight! Typically not that long..and a LOT of fun for everyone I’ve ever known who has taken one. Great job..

I was a mechanic on Army helicopters, 68-69 in Vietnam and 69 to 71 at Fort Knox. I had a very smooth ride in a Bell 47 or OH-13, the rotor system was perfectly balanced, and I believe that 505 could use a little touch up on main rotor blade tracking. Several times I was in the front seat of an AH-1G Cobra gunship. On a 2 AM test flight at Vinh Long, we took off and climbed to around 1500 feet and the pilot came on the intercom and asked me to "take over for a bit while I write some things down." Okay," I said and kept us straight and level for a while, then we started running out of lights on the ground and all was black as the inside of a cow ahead, so I started a left turn and decided to dive a little just for the fun of it. The artificial horizon was inop in the front so instrument flying was out, especially for this rookie. The change in sound was noticed in back and he asked me what was going on, so I explained the reason for the turn. He told me he must have been asleep. So I asked if he thought he could stay awake long enough to land us back at the base okay. "I think so," he replied in a not very reassuring tone. I told him, "Okay, I'll be watching." He got us back into the revetment just fine and rolled off to idle, then immediately went back to sleep. I later found out he had made three round trips to Saigon that day and had been up for 27 hours straight. It took three guys to peel him out of the seat. Can I log that solo time? On another day time Cobra flight I was treated to an introductory ride, straight down at red line, pull out just in time over a rice paddy, skimming along just above the weeds then pulling up right before colliding with the tree line. I asked the jockey if he actually got paid for doing this stuff. Yup. But hey, if you ever get a chance to ride with a young buck, full of piss and vinegar, in an OH-6A "Loach" (Hughes 500) go for it, You will get the ride of your life.
Picture this, two Vietnamese guys, of questionable loyalty given their location, sitting on top of a rice paddy dike, and we are trucking along at full speed aiming to spear them with the skids if they don't move out of the way. They dove left and right at the last possible second as we bored in on them. Later on that flight we encountered flocks of birds flying up as they heard us approach. Some of them turned into shredded tweet as they encountered our rotor blades. One had the last word though as it crashed through the left bubble, scattering blood and feathers around the cockpit. Battle damage.

Thanks for sharing your experience. To the casual viewer, it is impossible to convey the feeling, the first time you are given the controls eh? I am lucky enough to have flown helicopters so I can fully understand the buzz and the tingles you experience every time.
Such good quality here too, it is so nice to be able to see all of the instruments so clearly. :)

So are you gonna get your Pilot's License and fly some Helicopters? If so, that would be so AWESOME!! I've flown in an AS-350B3 to go rescue another Helicopter that had to land out in the desert due to metal shavings in the Main Gearbox. Keep up the GREAT work! I hope your adventures are FUN!! It's absolutely beautiful where you're at! I'd love to visit over there someday! 👍👍

If I wanted to risk loss which is loss of life I would chose something safer than getting in a helicopter- maybe I’d dive off El Capitan with a wing suit on 😉
