    The best I ever saw.. 11/28/71, he was on the bench recovering from injury when the Jets replacement was injured, so he had to play. They were down by 24 and He marches them downfield 4 times.. 3x for tourchdowns, the last time the ball slipped through Caster's hands in the end zonce with less than 30 seconds.. greatest comeback I ever saw.

    Imagine if Namath had had both (a) the same knees he had while a junior in college, and (b) the benefit of the pass-friendly NFL rule changes that were instituted in '74 and '78? His career stats would have been much more impressive, that's for certain, and he almost certainly would have made it back to the Super Bowl at least once. If not in '69, then definitely in '72, when the Jets had a young John Riggins in the backfield.

    • @bastonefreddy
      @bastonefreddy 9 лет назад +2

      SingleTax the reason they didn't get by in 72 was no DE. 70 would of been great but some no name took a out of bounds shot right on his knee.

      @bigjoe4110 9 лет назад +1

      SingleTax The Jets finished 7-7 in 1972, 3 games out a playoff spot. so it would have taken a LOT of improvement to get them in the playoffs.

    • @SingleTax
      @SingleTax 9 лет назад +1

      Let's apply the same principle in reverse. Imagine if Roger Staubach's or Fran Tarkenton's or Joe Montana's knees had been replaced with Namath's. Do you not think that would have constituted a major disimprovement?

    • @dmg1857
      @dmg1857 9 лет назад

      +bigjoe4110 It looks bad on paper now, but the Jets would have been the wild card had they won their last 2 games. Beat the Raiders and the Browns, and the Jets get the wild card because they would win the tiebraker with Cleveland. But they really were not a playoff team, defense was terrible. And there was no excuse for loss to Houston.

    Something about watching Namath speak. It’s like putting together Clint Eastwood and dusty rhodes. He had the brash do it my way attitude of Clint but the swagger, rhythm and flow of the American Dream. Dudes an original. Very reckless on and off the field but one of a kind nonetheless.

  • @MrRufusRToyota
    @MrRufusRToyota 5 лет назад +9

    Anyone who questions Namath doesn’t understand what he was expected to accomplish. He was expected to (1) put football fans in the seats in New York, (2) put football fans in the seats in the AFL, (3) promote the team and league with casual/non-fans through his non-football activities, (4) set passing records, (5) legitimize the AFL and push a merger with the NFL, and (6) win the Super Bowl. The owner would encourage him to stay out at night and make the paper for his playboy nightlife. And then he had to practice and play. His job wasn’t just winning games. He had to win games in spite of everything else. And he did all of it. Respect.

    My hero as a little kid. People will knock Namath because he didn't have the greatest numbers, which he didn't. But what he did have more than anyone else was leadership and moxie. Like the "Guarantee" before the Super Bowl while he was hanging out poolside with the women in Miami. It wasn't calculated, just that he lost his patience with the beat writers that didn't believe the hapless Jets had a chance against Unitas and the almighty Colts. Ironic that Shula's loss sent him to the Dolphins. As they say, the rest is history.

    in 72 , the jets had the best offence in football .
    they'rs defence was one of the worst against the pass.

    but that offence was as good as any in football history.

      +FREDDY BASTONE / No FiLtr LTD. One thing about those Namath teams is that they never seemed to be able to get a yard when they really needed it. Really hurt them in 72. Were down on the 1 early in the game against Houston and couldn't get in, down on the 1 in the first Miami game and couldn't get in. They sure could pass block, but never trusted them on short yardage. You are right, they had a great offense that year, and that was despite the fact Caster and Barkum dropped a lot more passes than Maynard and Sauer ever did.

      +FREDDY BASTONE / No FiLtr LTD. ...his career numbers are pathetic...220 career ints compared to 173 td passes..? he averaged 18 ints per season in his crappy 12 year career..and his lifetime QBR is a dismal 65.5...that ranks in the bottom of QB's who played 10 or more years.. he had one singular defining moment, in an otherwise crappy career..it's a shame he's in the HOF..when looking at his full body of work, he doesn't deserve to be in Canton..

    • @conni70
      @conni70 8 лет назад

      +brettfavreify ...the Jets started winning once their running game and defense became their staple...it wasn't until Namath stopped trowing the ball with frequency that things began to change in their favor.. he was horrible at deceiving defensive backs, they could read him a mile away...

    • @conni70
      @conni70 8 лет назад

      +brettfavreify ...but when looking at his career numbers , it becomes apparent why he's in Canton...it's simply because he had one singular defining moment, the "guarantee" in addition to being in the biggest media market, in NY..his full body of work wasn't taken into account when he was voted into the HOF...the only people who feel he belongs in Canton are obviously Jets fans or people who don't understand football...it really is a shame he's in the HOF ...

      Get your head out of the stat books . in 1972 ,coming back from 2 knee surgeries and a seperated shoulder , he was the top passer in the league , all pro and if he had a defence they would of beat miami. the nan called his own plays better then anyone (this is not on stat books). why don't u see wat the men who really know about football think? Al DAvis , Don Shula , John Madden ,and more...if Namath didnt exist there would be no Marino.love to see wat comes back , just to see wat kind of mind i'm dealing with. go back and watch the NFL network ,stat boy.

    Bart , wat a joke. athletic ability? Bart had 2 legs . did joe? As far as Stabler , he was GREAT and should of been a 1st ballet Famer. which brings me to the case of y it took so long for Kenny Stabler and y isnt kenny anderson in? lets not harp on Namath because to me its a no brainer and obviosly i have company being he's a 1st time hall of famer. i have a problem with guys from the 70's and 80's being over looked for 90's players and the rush of WR getting in. y not Klecko , Hendricks , Atkinson , winston hill , russ francis , shall i go on?

    The Jets only won because of a stupid lateral by Lamonica (the Raiders would have won this game if they had just carefully continued to advance the ball to the goal line instead of this stupid pass) and also by the ridiculous rules that saw this game played in Shea Stadium instead of Oakland---The Raiders had a better record (12-2 vs 11-3 for the Jets) and also defeated the Jets in the regular season ("Heidi" game)---the AFL had this archaic rule that saw the title game rotated from West to East each year instead of being based on record/merit. If this game had been played in Oakland there is no way the Jets would have won--even the weather conditions alone conspired against the Raiders that day

      Head slaps,clothes line shots to receivers. no in the grasp rule, piling on, wide hash marks so 1 sideline was easier to defend, only houston had a dome. Nickel back defense developed against him as 4000 yd seasons in 14 games impressed someone.
