    I’ve heard and understand the argument of book readers that Alicent and Aemond are being let off the hook and their agency taken away from them because of circumstance but I disagree. I think Alicent hears what she wants to hear on Visarys’ death bed. I don’t look at that moment as making her a sympathetic slave to circumstance. Also I see Aemonds reaction on Vaghar(sp?) as a distillation of a concept they talk about in the pilot episode: the realm is full of “warriors” that know nothing of war and its consequences. Aemond is a childish bully playing at war. When he kills Lucerys he realizes that he fucked up but I think he’s going to pivot and own the kill as if he totally meant it.

    • @mylessmith8059
      @mylessmith8059 2 года назад

      That could’ve possibly been Aemond’s first kill so it’ll be interesting to see how his character moves forward
      I hope that he owns it in public but in his private moments (especially with his mom) he knows he messed up

  • @Ellimof

    I think the show has done a great job with the changes it has made from the book while staying true to the book. Especially since the book is written from an in-universe history perspective. For example, Luke’s death to Aemond being an accident in the show is more compelling to me than Aemond just being evil and murdering his cousin in cold blood like the book implies. There are no witnesses of the event besides Aemond and while his intentions may not have been to kill Luke, history won’t see it that way. Hence, it can still still remain accurate to the book.

  • @manvirshergill1739
    @manvirshergill1739 2 года назад +5

    Honestly I was hoping to see the Unforgiving , Ruthless and the crazy Aemond Targaryen that we get from the book... so at first I didn't like what they did with him in this episode but after sitting on it for a while I actually really like it now... it just makes it more tragic and gives complexity to Aemond's character. I can't help but feel though that blood and cheese, dying of the dragons.. the whole civil war that is going to happen is because of a misunderstanding and an accident 🤣🤣🤣 but As someone who read fire and blood I'd give this season as a whole 8.5/10... some changes and inconsistencies here and there but overall a really good show. Hyped for season 2 🔥🔥🔥

    Rachel! It was so fun to see her and get her thoughts on the show! I did love this season, it was so nuanced and the characters were so well developed. Which honestly surprised me. When i found out that they were going to be skipping time, I wasn't sure how that would work out for the characters but man was I wrong! The story was so beautifully crafted and the show was beautifully shot, and the character development was so rich, and like Rachel said, the body acting. The way Emma Darcy just gave everything to her character... I am in love with this show and i am going to spend the weekend rewatching it all in one day. Lol. This season was so fun to discuss and talk about! Till next time everyone!

    The Miguel Sapochnik thing is being way overblown by you Kristian.
    There was no falling out. He never planned to continue beyond Season 1. He was only there to help guide a completely new production team through the experience of creating this type of show for an entire season.
    Ryan Condal is the one who is the A Song of Ice and Fire/GOT super fan. He’s the Dave Filoni of this universe. Miguel never even read the books.
    Alan Taylor will step in just fine and nobody will ever even know Sapochnik existed. He never wrote a single episode for GOT/HOTD and wasn’t involved in anything beyond directing/executive producing.

      @@TheKristianHarloff Ok! I will! I hope you are well! As well!
      Ryan Condal is the one who makes this engine turn, so as long as he’s still there I’ll have no problems. Alan Taylor is a TV legend and has way more experience with GOT than Sapochnik ever did so there’s going to be zero drop off.
      Big bonus that we never have to watch another episode where we can’t see shit, too!

    Great discussion! But I have to agree with you, Kristian, with the layers of complexity this show has brought.
    Although there is much respect and love for the book, it sometimes seems to fall on pure evil and greed, while the show offers more of a tragic perspective, one of the main elements that make great villains arise.

    Just a word on the Ryan Condal/Miguel Sapochnik situation. From everything I've gathered with interviews/behind the scenes, etc. Outside of GRRM's source material, Condal is the heart of the show. He's the lead writer, and while I don't think everything has been absolutely perfect with the writing, it's been mostly really good and has soared with extremely high highs. Condal's a self confessed nerd of GRRM's books, and he seems sincere in that.
    This is not to take anything away from Sapochnik. I'm just a fan and a laymen just looking from the outside in, but the impression I get from interviews was that he did this more as favour to Condal (who was appointed first as showrunner) to get the show up and running as they were friends previous to this and it kinda fell into Sapocnik's lap that he became co-showrunner as he ended up doing a lot of work on it. Sapochnik had the experience from his time on GOT working on a project on the massive scale that HOTD would be, and all the logistics that would be involved that Condal did not. But Condal was essentially handpicked by GRRM.
    Sapochnik undoubtedly brings a special sauce to HOTD that's uniquely his and goes beyond just the episodes that he directed. I do worry a bit that his special magic will be missed in the upcoming seasons. As has been pointed out, while there's been a few scenes of notable spectacle (funnily enough, this where HOTD noticeably stumbles at times, where the logic present for 95% if the show disappears for the sake of big actions beats), the strength of HOTD (alongside it's glorious cast) has been the writing , and Condal is spearing that.
    So, long story short, while ideally, it would be great if Condal and Sapochnik could stay on together. However, of the two, if one had to go, I'd would rather that Condal stays, as he would be the much bigger miss for me, and would potentially affect the quality of HOTD more tangibly if he were to go instead of Sapochnik.

    After only 10 episodes I seriously think this shows 1st season eclipses GoT first season. I never thought that would be possible considering GoT ended by putting a bad taste in my mouth and I don’t like most prequels on principle. Usually I don’t need to know about what came before in franchises but prequels like House of the Dragon and Andor are the way to do them right, unlike Solo for instance. This show excels at knowing what story it’s telling. The time jumps and the way they are used signals a maturity that GoT lacked.

    You’re right about being one of the best 1st seasons ever. You’re definitely not over-hyping this. I’d still say Soprano’s still ranks 1st for me. Breaking Bad is there too. I really think though the way HoD handled it’s 1st season is going t be a new blueprint for tv to emulate.

    It's Rachel! #shirewolves forever! Great insights as always. The time jumps were certainly needed. Not a perfect execution, but way better than the "teleporter" movements we saw in the latter of GoT. I think they (and others) will do better with this technique after getting experience on how to do it. I fall into the Amonde was really trying to bully Luke. And the respective "sweet summer children" are new to battle--it shows and this is the result. My only disappointment is that "the damn foolish thing" is why they go war? Well, it does happen in history. Bring on season 2.

    10:22 I've read the books (including Fire and Blood) but i am one of those that loved the interpretation that Aemond did not wanted to kill him at the end and was the dragons who acted on their own...
    I think it does not undermine the agency of Aemond nor Lucerys. At the end, dragons have a connection to their riders, yes, but a psichological / emotional one. Aemond knew politicaly that killing Lucerys was goind to start open war so he rationakl part decided to stop at some point, but deep inside him, he wanted to kill him because of the rage, the hate, the humiliation he felt as a kid when he loose his eye, the revenge he wanted... And Vaghar FELT that. just as Syrax felt the pain of Rhaenyras miscarriage.

    This first season, is benchmark storytelling, in the sense that, when adapting a pre-existing novel, this show really cherry-picked the right stuff (for audiences), and gave us episodes with potent storytelling plotlines, and nothing really that could have been left out. All the storylines had an impact on the overall plot, and didn't feel like "filler". I loved the season.

    I enjoyed Season 1. I give it a pretty good rating minus a couple things here and there obviously. Started a little slow. But had me invested around Ep 4. Really good episode. Ep 5 hooked me in completely. It's the turning point of the season. Ep 8 and Ep 7 are the two best respectively. 8 was peak GoT. 7 was very Shakespearean. Ep 9 to me is the most underrated cause it's a "You Win or You Die" political intrigue episode marred by three mins of a "Beyond the Wall" ending. Ep 3 to me is the most overrated cause ppl loved it so much but it was basically just a MCU movie feat. King of the Sigmas and the Crabfeeders.

    I would like to see more of their history after the dance of dragons but I think it would be better served as it's own "show" rather than a continuation of HOTD. Honestly it may even be better as a limited series just to bridge the gap between HOTD and GOT rather than something that runs for 3-4 seasons on its own. I am getting worried that there are so many spin offs in the works that it may start to feel like they are milking for content and length and would hate for that to be how this world goes out.

    I think the show portrayed Alicent in a way that she took something she didn't fully understand and used that to fuel what she already believed/wanted. It was just something she could use to rally more support, that she didn't realize was already working behind the scenes, for her son's cause. I also think that since the book is told by multiple narrators and some are unreliable that Aemond comes back and owns what happened with Luc and claims it was intentional. He was effing with Luc but decides this is who is going to be so there is ownership coming, in my theory/opinion.

    About the Viserys and Aemma C section scene, you're supposed to understand that Aemma was going to die no matter what (Confirmed by Ryan Condal on Inside The Episode 1). Having the baby was going to kill her, it was not a matter of her or the baby, it was either she dies and the baby might live, or they both die. The show did not do a great job of explaining that and many people (myself included) came to the incorrect conclusion that Viserys chose his son over his wifes life, but to be clear, Viserys did not sacrifice his wife to save Baelon, the "heir for a day", he choose his son over losing them both. It probably was a more interesting choice to have him actually choose, as that's far more tragic that he lost both over something that was needless, but that's not how it actually happened.

    I really appreciated that Rhaenys didn't blindly support Rhaenyra just because they're both women and should be "allies" based on that fact alone. Just like the male characters don't deserve blind support and loyalty neither should the female characters w/o demonstrating their character and that they deserve the support in their actions.

    lol I think everyone knows that Alicent did not actually misunderstand him. She just used that as an excuse to do what she wanted. I'm also here to keep complaining about Robert Meyer Burnette spoiling the finale days before it aired. What a dick. It would've been so gut wrenching to watch that final scene unspoiled.

    See Harold even she said the time jumps where too jarring. They should have flushed out the dead characters. Like String did he even say any words in the show? His death meant nothing. Deamonds second wife she never even spoke her dragon kills her means nothing. It felt rushed to someone who hasn’t read the books but seen all 8 seasons of game of thrones week to week
