How to Make Chow Mein with Ken Hom | Tesco

  • Here's celebrity chef and TV presenter Ken Hom with an easy chow mein recipe using just a handful of flavoursome ingredients and a simple chow mein sauce.
    Ingredients:
    225g (7 1/2oz) dried or fresh egg noodles
    1tbsp sesame oil, plus more to serve
    1 1/2tbsp groundnut or vegetable oil
    2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
    50g (2oz) carrots, shredded
    50g (2oz) mangetout, trimmed and shredded
    3tbsp spring onions, finely chopped on the diagonal
    1 red pepper, shredded
    pinch sugar
    2tsp light soy sauce
    2tsp dark soy sauce
    1tbsp rice wine or dry sherry

      You can see his passion for food. Definitely with Chinese cooking, less is more. Jamie Orrible would be throwing all sorts into this chow mein, but it isn't needed.

    I've used Ken Hom's fried rice recipe in my kitchen for 25 years and have never had better in any Chinese restaurant. Chef Hom is the master!

    I always like to watch Ken Hom videos because he has a very pleasing presentational style. There's a gentleness to his manner that's always a welcome contrast to the more egotistical, diva-type chefs.

    What I love about Ken Hom's video is that he doesn't talk down to you, he isn't all flash, he's laid back, he takes his time to explain what he's doing at each stage. I have just ordered a wok and a selection of food items to give his recipes a try.

    I love watching this guy cook . I first found Ken , some 20 odd years ago on Sky's QVC shopping channel . I couldn't believe how quick he could put a chinese meal together , in such a short space of time . He gives clear , concise instructions , with as other posters have already mentioned , the reasons behind these choices , and all in a really polite and humble kinda way . Even here he showed how to hold and use a cleaver . A very pleasant guy to watch .

    What a really lovely chap! Great tips here. Chow Mein can be so varied. My own tip is stick to veggies you like, I add shitake mushrooms instead of the peppers. Pre-cook meat and add if you don't want vegatatian. Great vid, thank you Ken
