I grew up in Slovakia and people only cross the road when green light comes on. You can get your balls busted by a police officer if they see you crossing on red, even if no cars are coming. However, living in the UK, I cross the street whenever it's safe, no matter what colour the light is, because that's the norm here, so I just blend in :). The problem is when I visit Slovakia, I continue crossing the road on red and I am immediately a villain.

Thing is I was hit by a girl that was on her phone on the pedestrian crossing, under the pedestrian crossing sign, in front of a school, and because her father in law was a police inspector the crossing was repainted, moved 10 meters away to make her innocent. So for me the lights, the signs, the crossings don’t mean anything, it’s only your responsibility to be safe, so cross whenever and wherever it’s safe 😂.

Spanish viewer here. We do jaywalk unless its a bussy multiple lane road, in my town people even walk in the middle of the road rather than in sidewalks if there aren't any cars nearby. Maybe in other big cities it's different but in Valencia we do jaywalk unless it's a big bussy avenue or there are cops watching.

In Germany and the Scandinavian countries, we wait for the green man.
    No matter cars or not.
    Well, in general...
But having been a lot in Spain I can tell you they a generally very relaxed about how they walk- or drive around.

Jaywalking is illegal in all states, but rarely enforced. A cop once stopped my wife for jaywalking on State St. in Santa Barbara (lots of pedestrians, slow traffic, something lots of people do). He told her a ticket would count as points against her driver's license (which could increase her insurance rates). She told him (correctly) that she didn't have a driver's license. At that point he gave up and left her alone.

In the Netherlands it's illegal to cross the road when the light is red. However you dont have to use the crosswalk/lights at all, you cann cross the road anywhere you want. But IF you cross at that location you have to (officially) cross when it's green.
    Might be like that?

  • @eduardopena7394

Spanish suscriber here. Jaywalking is illegal in Spain, as in most countries I know of (and I have traveled a lot). Now, the chances of a Spanish policeman fining you if he sees you doing it, while there is no cars around, are pretty low. But it's important to note that, in case of an accident, you would be responsible for it, as you are breaking the law.
People in Spain respect more the traffic lights cos we have more road safety education than many other countries that I have been to, although this is mostly true as pedestrians, not so much as drivers. We don't enjoy waiting to cross cos we like slacking (yet again, the prejudice of Spaniards being lazy...), but because we've been taught is the right thing to do.
Regarding Spain not being an economic world powerhouse, we are ranking 15 of more than 150 countries. And most countries above us are just bigger countries = bigger economies. We are good enough IMHO.
Now, when you consider quality of life, we are ranked top 5 / top 10 in most rankings (always above UK btw).
My advice to you is that you should be admiring the good things that you see in other countries (like higher road safety education) not making cheap jokes about it. I admire british punctuality (something Spaniars are lacking terribly), I don't look for silly explanations about why is that the case, you are just more respectful of other's people time than we are.

Inlove the banter between the two... It's awsome :D
Regarding the jaywalking, usually i do it, however the exception is if there are children around. I don't to see a child see me jaywalking because i don't want to set a bad example. It's safe for me, it might not be safe for a child to do it.

Lol - you two! Of course a stop light is meant to be observed! (Jenna is so wise.) "We're taught as children!" The switches enable crossers who wouldn't otherwise trigger a change to follow the law. People would do well to slow down and allow their brains to catch up every now and then!

I lived in Barcelona from 2016-2020 in a very busy part of the city. There were always tons of people on the streets so we waited for the walk signal.
The problem if you don't, there are 10 people waiting to cross with you and all of a sudden you decide to dart across, the people around you will immediately follow (thinking the light has changed green) and you risk having one of the others hit/killed.

Jaywalking is everywhere but very different in the US. If you step off the curb in NYC cars try to mow you down. If you step off the curb in Berkeley, pedestrians rule and cars screech to a halt.

  • @GermanFafian

I live in Madrid and as far as I know. It is not illegal to just cross the streets/avenues if there is no traffic. You can even cross in the middle of the road, not only on the pedestrian cross. Not that it is smart to do it, but I doubt a cop will stop you if no traffic is coming your way.
As for people waiting for the green light when no cars are coming. I wonder if those were not actual tourists.
We do live a more relaxed and easy life than most other European countries and we love to enjoy our food and beer restaurant terraces with calm and ease.

Answer: Probably breaking a law. Don't know about Spain's enforcement but it's the same custom in Austria. People just wait for the green man. (Could be green man, 2 green men, 2 green women.) Apparently it's to set a safe example for children.
Every crossing, I ask people I am with, "Are going to be Austrian, or are we going to be normal people?"
I have crossed in sight of a police car without knowing it, and they yelled at me over their loudspeaker, but nothing more.

If there is this much discussion about crossing the road in Spain. Come to India, no one cares about if a car is coming or not. Just show your hand to the incoming car and hope he doesn't run over you as an everyday philosophy. My US friends who immigrated from Austria visited me and took a video of me crossing the road.😂

In Australia ,to cross against the lights IS jay walking the same as crossing within 30 meters of a marked crossing and most of the walk buttons only work in the off peak times..But most people don't know this, it is to improve traffic flow... NOBODY has common sense . IF there were common sense , we would not have any kind of lottery or credit cards .If you cant afford something now, how can afford to pay more for it latter ? . Among other things.

Is jaywalking illegal in California? As of January 1, 2023, jaywalking is illegal in California per Vehicle Code 21955 VC only if there is an immediate chance of a collision with a motor vehicle or bike. Therefore if there is no close oncoming traffic, you can jaywalk without fear of being ticketed.

Hi Mark, you do not understand the difference in culture. Here in Finland regardless of traffic you will always press the button, wait for the green man and then walk. Even if it's the middle of the night with zero traffic, you will still press the button and wait for the green man.

I agree. I’m in Australia and I always wait for the green man. My thinking is that these crossing lights have cost me, the taxpayer, a fortune and I’m going to use them properly. I’m not going to give someone an excuse to run me over. If we follow the logic of crossing when people feel it’s safe to do so, then we have anarchy. That’s not a joke. Just do away with traffic lights and leave it up to the individual’s good judgement. Oh yeh.
