Thanks Buddy for posting this.I use the Op-1 but sometimes I get a bit confused or stuck. You just helped out quite a bit.Much appreciated.I hit the Sucribe button. Thanks for the help. The Op-1 is a fascinating and unusual instrument/Beat Making tool.I have various pieces of gear but I for some reason like the sound of The Op-1 I have the 1121 Edition the revised version towards the end of its production.Once I completely figure out the O.G Op-1 I will eventually get the Op-1 Field.Great Tutorial. You made things easy to understand. When I go home I'll try playing with long samples and the technique that you demonstrated.I'm not ready for the Field model yet.I'll just figure out what I have for the time being.
Thanks man! I already kinda knew all this, but the way you executed it is perfect, and there were a couple little tips that were VERY helpful!! I appreciate it
@@gregonater Well I've noticed there aren't many super beginner tutorials floating about. The best one I've seen so far was the one that TE put out themselves. It's nice to have each button broken down to its functions and usability.
Great tip! also, had no idea about two of those shortcuts you mentioned, increasing the sample volume or changing the tape mode resolution. that one in particular is super helpful! also, I liked the beat you ended up making, even if it was just a tutorial!
Had my op1 for many years and always love finding new tips. Still much to master with it. I knew about this though you have a teensy bit diff approach & explain very well. . Wish there were better tuts like this 6years ago! Subscribed… :) even stuff I know I like seeing reviewed again. There's other tricks I use that are related to this, with using time stretching and expanding to help extend the time you have for recording… like lowering tape speed to record longer than 6 mins! Also I may be won't but I think if you wanna alter the volume of all the samples on the keys at once you can raise the lowest key then copy it and paste it from the keyboard and it'll make the change across the board. Was stoked when I found that tip. So many possibilities and capabilities in this thing… I know a lot but it's taken so long and I've still so long to go. There was srsly no manual when this came out nor many resources to learn, at all! Looks like you're newish relatively here, at least to me, and it's also cool to find a fresh teacher/creator who's currently active & providing info in real time who seems like they remember how tricky this stuff can be to fully grasp. I like that you showed about sampling with a line in and wo, and then about tempo/beat synching after. And showed the cutting and lifting and re-placing of the wave in tape track.. I mention all this cause even though these are things I know/can do already, took a long ass time to know about and get proficient these fundamentals. ..giving you this feedback as encouragement cause there's so many op1 vids now but so many are still too slow or fast or much or little & can cause confusion and frustration. I now know enough to know there's a lot left to learn BUT think I'm finally skilled enough to get into bits I don't fully understand well enough to really be maximizing my music making the way I want to be &'know I can with this outstanding machine. It's hard to ask questions when you don't know what you don't know, you know? Maybe you'll be the one to finally lead me to the AHAs of ooohhh now I get it moments I'm wanting for so long now. … I've some things I wanna know if are possible and can't find any mention of but seem like they must be … will write on a new line… thanks for reading all this. Hopefully my long winded words are not too annoying and make sense and are even useful. :)
Thank you mate really useful video and super clear. I’m sitting on the fence and getting splinters on whether or not to jump in... lots of user reporting Qc issues it seems following the hardware 2.0. A video on the internal revisions and changes would be WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD! Not many people seem to have details past a new screen..? Thanks again mate it’s dangerous to go alone out here!!!!
djmonkfish I think all gens have had certain common issues. The annoying thing seems to be that it’s always difficult to get parts. I don’t have any experience with other gen op-1s than what I have (I suppose 2.0?) so I don’t know if I would be a useful resource for that as I would just be guessing from other forum posts etc. If I were you, I would try to buy a used unit in good shape or buy straight from TE if you want one! It does suck that you have to worry about reliability and quality though and TE really does tend to disappoint me in a lot of ways. Anyway, good luck!
Thanks a lot! I hoped to find a way to chop "perfectly" a bit easier. To me as a sample novice its not so easy to be precise with the inpoints. I get lost in a longer sample, even with the clearer visuals on the field.
Ok this is awesome! Quick question. When recording a sample directly into the tape, is there any limitation to that? For instance, if I wanted to sample the same zelda song you did but wanted to keep it the way it is and just add background drums to it, could I do that instead of slicing the sample up to add it to separate keys? That way the sample just lives on the tape as a separate track?
I don't know how I missed this comment! Sorry, i'm sure you've figured it out by now. You could sample anything you want to the tape and it can live there as a backing track for whatever you want to do on the other tape track! You would want to match the OP-1's tempo to the tempo of your sample, record it in and then try to have it loop smoothly. It might take some experimenting to get the temp correct so it will loop correctly as the OP-1 can't time stretch audio to tape markers, but it can definitely be done with some patience!
Can you control the master eq while resampling? I'm trying to pan a hihat every 2 beat right and left... haven't figured it out yet. Thanks for the trick though.
Since the tape tracks are mono, I think the only way to do this would be to sample to two separate tape tracks and pan one hard left and hard right and chop it up from there. Master EQ should be applied when resampling though I believe if I'm understanding correctly.
Good tutorial man. Didn't know you could change resolution on the tape with shift+stop. And the resampling technique is something I have to try out. But why do you use a noise gate on your audio? I think it's better to just have natural speaking, instead of just cutting off sound momentarily. That's just my opinion tho. Also really cool that you sampled Majoras Mask music! Such a great game.
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial. The mic I have adds quite a bit of white noise unfortunately. With the hardware and software I have this was as good as I can get it without spending hours editing audio for each video.
best way these days is to sample from the drum kit. get like 20 seconds, it'll auto chop up the sample along the keys into bits at the same tempo, and then you can set one key to have the full sample on it
Do you mean shift and the record to arm the recording? Sorry I’m a little confused what you’re referring to but with a bit more detail I may be able to help you with your problem!
If you mean shift then stop to cut the tape up more, you may have to update the firmware on your OP-1. I believe this feature was added in version #235.
i thought this was going to be some shit video with obvious advice like "JUST SPEED IT UP ON RUclips" but i've genuinely learned something despite having some years of op-1 experience, i had to do this recently but i did it with difficulty on audacity when i could've done this instead liked/saved for reference
Can't pitch the sample globally across keys?? Man....I keep trying to find an excuse to buy this thing...I *really* do love the form and style factor..but even the original price was a dealbreaker in light of all the workarounds and shortcomings.
It truly is bad in some ways, and it's expensive, and TE is pretentious and annoys me as a company...but I still find the OP-1 special and I won't ever sell it. My advice if you are debating purchasing one is to buy a used one in good shape so you can sell it if you decide it's not for you!
@@gregonater thanks for the response! I have considered buying one aftermarket but the battery life was what concerned me. Also, isn't there a 2nd generation one with better dials? I thought I remember reading about it

nice quality and good delivery. My op1 is in the mail and I'm tryin to soak up as much knowledge as possible.

Great stuff! The more I learn, the greater the op-1 world. Thank you.
i cant believe how much stuff i learned from this video. i’ve learned more tape trucks than 15 minute tape tricks videos

The Chrono Trigger video earned you a sub, but this easily earned you an instant "notification bell" as well. Great video!

Great tutorial! I keep coming back to watch this one.
(Add how to chop samples to title. That is what I was here for and learned!) Good Video
Great vid.. Little trick if you lift the samplee and put it down using the arrows, it normalizes the volume, across all of the keys.
Awesome 🤩
ahhh, as a beginner OP_1 player(?), this vid helped me so much!!
Time consuming but dope!!
This is gold. Thank you
very nice video!
(the only thing that slightly bugged me was that the audio from you speaking cuts off very apruptly)
Gold!
This video saved my workflow! Thanks a lot! 🤘☺️
Glad it helped!

Nice! Thanks for this.
Keep up the good work ;)
You taught me something! Thx!
MOOOORE!! can you make more tutorials, currently waiting for my op1
If I think of anything I know how to do and isn’t already on youtube I’ll try!
Even if it's on RUclips you should make it, your style suits me better than others, you explain everything so well

I have a question about this man. Can you play samples with portamento/legato.
Sorry for the late reply! You can play with portamento and legato in the synth sample engine but not in the drum sample engine.
@@gregonater Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it!
You can lift up and put sample without record with ear
man my shift + pause function doesnt work... this makes it so much more difficult to precisely chop my samples

@@SweetChinMuzik1 The late models I believe just have updated screens, and possibly better DACs (less noisey) but I'm not 100% sure.
