- With the holiday season approaching, Burnaby RCMP has released dash-cam video of a recently-convicted impaired driver to illustrate the dangers of drinking and driving.
The video was taken on January 8, 2021 and was captured by the impaired driver’s own dash cam as he travelled from Richmond, to Vancouver, and into Burnaby. The video was later seized by police after a search warrant was executed.
The video shows the driver crossing the centre line towards oncoming traffic multiple times, narrowly missing other vehicles. The video also shows the driver blowing through a stop sign and driving through a red light.
In one portion of the video, pedestrians are walking through an intersection, not far from the vehicle.
Police were first alerted to the situation around 11:57 p.m. when several callers reported that a Cadillac Escalade had struck parked vehicles and a fire hydrant near Royal Oak Avenue and Marine Drive, sending water onto the street and into nearby homes.
Despite the impact of the crashes, the driver made the decision to keep driving. The dash cam video shows the driver continuing along the road in an oncoming lane before crashing into a stop sign.
The driver finally came to a stop near Gilley Avenue and Marine Drive around 12:03 a.m. as Burnaby RCMP officers arrived. By then, the SUV was badly damaged and was missing a tire.
The driver refused to provide a breath sample and did not cooperate with police.
In August, 2021, a 62-year old Burnaby resident was convicted of impaired driving. He received a one-year driving prohibition and a $1,000 fine.
The actions of the driver caused an estimated $28,000 in flooding damage to nearby homes, and more than $6,600 in damage to City of Burnaby property.
“It is shocking that nobody was killed or injured including the driver,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “This driver made a decision to put himself and others at risk when he got behind the wheel that night and drove through three cities. Burnaby RCMP is sharing the video in hopes it may deter others from drinking and driving.
“We urge everyone to watch this video. This is what impaired driving looks like,” Kalanj added. “There is no excuse for being impaired behind the wheel.”
Holiday CounterAttack:
The holiday season brings with it the annual December CounterAttack campaign. Police are urging drivers to make the responsible decision to plan a safe ride home.
When you decide to drive impaired, you are not only risking your life, but the lives of others on the road and those around the road.
On average, 16 people are killed and 830 injured in 1,500 impaired driving related crashed in the Lower Mainland alone, every year.
Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is a criminal offence and can severely alter your life and the lives of others. Some of the results of impaired driving may include:
*Criminal charges
* Injuries
* Death of others
* Your death
Police have planned CounterAttack roadchecks all across this province over the coming weeks.
“If you plan on attending a gathering where alcohol is involved, please plan for a safe ride home,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “If you choose to drive impaired, you are taking the risk of coming across a CounterAttack roadcheck and you will be taken off the road.”

Description: Dashcam video taken at night that shows a vehicle swerving into oncoming traffic lanes, leaving the road onto a grassy area, running a red light, running a stop sign, sideswiping other vehicles, and crashing into a fire hydrant. The video also shows a damaged fire hydrant sending water onto the street with firefighters nearby. The video ends with shots of damage to a red SUV that is missing a tire.
They should have their drivers license denied FOR LIFE. Even a person this drunk can recognize the damage they are doing in the moment.
Yeah, this dude didn't care
half right. they *should* have their licence revoked for life; but I've been too drunk to complete a "click all the cars to log in" before. the problem isn't behind the wheel, its the decision *to get* behind the wheel.
He got six months of probation and handed a $1,000 fine and one-year driving prohibition. In other words nothing.
He deserves a year in prison atleast, years of probation and life long driving prohibition.
$1000 and 1 year driving prohibited is a slap on the wrist. Pathetic.
Canadian justice system is a joke.
It's been that way for over 40 yrs some get it some just don't and it's very sad.
The drunk should PAY for all of the DAMAGE, plus some jail time!
I'm not going to say I have NEVER driven with some alcohol in my system - but damn - this driver was WASTED.
Drunk drivers giving booze cruisers a bad name
@@dcdude345 lolz
A one year driving prohibition and a $1000.00 fine is a complete joke in this case.
Unfortunately, what passes for a "justice system" is a complete joke these days too.
Imagine being hit from behind by a drunk driver at 100mph with cocaine in his car and fracturing your back after never taking a sip of alcohol your entire life. Still trying to catch up on bills while I wait on insurance to pay out.
its like he not even trying....
Not only have I seen driving like this, I called 911 on them and followed them for 25 minutes. The police never responded.
Same.
Wow, good on you. I'd be too lazy, which is a bad thing because that sort of stuff, calling 911 on drunk drivers, saves lives.
Is there any way the police can take away his license? this is unacceptable and put's public safety at great risk.
Even if they did take his license away, that won't stop him from driving.
A lot of loser's who have their licenses taken away for DUI will still drive because they don't care.
If they did care, they wouldn't have driven drunk to begin with.
@@egryeyes You make a good point. I like the approach of requiring a breathalyzer test before being allowed to drive. There's a device that requires a breathalyzer test before the person can drive.
Horrific
im glad they told me that light was red
In an average lifetime, you have probably passed at least one drunk driver going the opposite direction on a highway
Three so far this year. All divided highways, and on my side of the divider.
It’s been a bad year.
This is how everybody drives in Richmond -_-
A $100,000.00 SUV and then we don't know why our insurance are so high?
Now it's a fountain.
This is most new drivers in Vancouver not drunk.
Our Justice system is a fucking joke ….
$1000 fine 1 year probation..
I remember when I was 13 caught driving with no license sn no insurance $5500 later an 2 years probation
Terrifying. Hope this person got a long sentence.
edit: lol, no jail time. My USA is showing.
perhaps you need to show this to all your own rcmp officers. as the rcmp officer who smashed a bridge, fell asleep at burger king drive thru for 20minutes, fought cops trying to arrest him, also resisted breathalyzer, fought down at the police station, gave the finger while being booked, Didn't even get charged with a dui just resisting arrest and refusing to provide a breathalyzer sample. no drunk driving charge, no assault charges. oh by the way he drank at various other rcmp officers houses and none of them were charged for letting him drive away from their residences. oh he still has a job as an officer. could you explain this double standard please ???
Ban for life! WTF?
I am not of the opinion that this person needs to be thrown in prison (given that no one was injured), but they have shown us that they are not responsible enough to drive a car. Their license needs to be revoked. Permenantly. A one-year suspension of their license isn't even close to being enough.
I wasn't drinking, the van just pulls to the left.....
I am gonna get a Volvo...that thing was a tank.
Thumbs up on the steering wheel. Keep er between the lines!
Was he black?
What?
