FYI, the CompTia Security+ exam is required to work with the U.S. government or any agencies. Same for Canada. Upon completion of this class, Google gives the student a ±30% coupon for taking the Sec+ exam.
On a side note, I just checked Coursera here in Spain, and it's listed at 53 euros/month.
I JUST got done with this cert. I'm hoping to find a job. I have a B.S. in Business Administration, MIS concentration.
@ShaneHummus gonna do Security+ first. Looking for material to carry me over a 6 month prep period. Not sure if there is a RUclips channel
Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future…
My spouse works for the federal government. She has 6 IT people in her department only one has a BS in computer science. Everyone else has IT certs. They all make good money
That's awesome thanks Andrew, and thankfully times are changing and organizations are no longer requiring these types of things.
Thanks for this! There is hope getting out of my stupid 9-5 job I don’t care about!
I do IT for the federal government and I don’t have a degree. They care more if you’re trust worthy, reliable, professional, and can learn.
@mattdddavis how hard is it to get hired on
@@D71219ONE How did you get started? I'm looking into a cybersecurity certificate through one of the local colleges, and honestly, I just want to know if the $17,000 is worth it.
I'm finishing up a Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity in December and decided to use the Google Cybersecurity Cert to brush up on some stuff. I'll just say, it may be the best learning platform I have used for basic level security tasks. On top of good explanations and highlighting key terms, the labs are great at showing concepts in action, and the quizzes do a good job of highlighting the important aspects. It's definitely a good certification to learn the basics of the field. I'm through 5 of the modules in about 4-5 days now but that is mostly because I already know most of the information presented (still have learned a good deal as well). I also have not done the portfolio stuff just yet. I want to go back and do them after I complete the entire training to see what I retained from the courses. I would recommend this as a great start to learn the basics of Cybersecurity if you have no background in it. Very impressed with it.
What would you recommend doing after getting the google cert
@@tylertemple1355 Probably not the best person to ask here because I already have an in with a company due to my Bachelor's degree but if I didn't have that I would probably go straight into getting Sec+. Sec+ is a more recognized certification currently and will probably at least get you into an interview. I'd make sure and do the portfolio stuff and build that during the Google cert so you have the ability to show a company that you can do entry level types of skills.
is coding needed?
@@HarjotSingh-ih3om No, You learn some coding in the certification classes
I would like ask, is Cybersecurity all about coding. i have an interest in cybersecurity but i dont rly have any experience in coding but im planning on taking up IT course in my university, so is it hard to learn coding with zero background in it?
Hi Shane, in week 2 of this course. I really like Google's course format, it's a good mix of media and it moves fairly quickly. I have a long background in IT, but most of my jobs were admin or tech help/operations, so I did everything from install software to run social media to order cakes for the department. It's been hard as a freelancer to create an identity so I'm hoping my move into cybersecurity will create a more defined path. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Been in the program since May 20th, its really fun and it is pretty beginner level. I’d definitely recommend getting the CompTia Security+ certification as well as it’s also a well know indicator that you know what your talking about when it comes to Cybersecurity, at least the basics anyway
Great to hear!
Dope. Do you recommend doing the Security + first or the Cybersecurity one?
@Shane Hummus Shane, why are you not talking about The American Dream Academy who's partnering with Coursera? Your subscribers could get such good certs for absolutely free through it. It closes July 1st. You should make a video on it to spread the word. I know you won't make money off it, but it's doing a good deed.
Could this be picked up with zero experience?? Or would the IT certificate be recommended beforehand
@@nightwaffle55 for me I had zero experience when I started, and the program does a good job teaching you everything you need to know. Once you finish it you can use it to study for the CompTia certifications test along with study guide videos on RUclips
I've been loving the Google cybersecurity certificate. To give some context, I entered a Master's of Science program for national cybersecurity studies (security studies, international relations, and cybersecurity). I came from a non-technical background and struggled. This certificate is helping me prepare for my graduation exams and Comptia Security+. This cert is helping fill the gaps of cybersecurity knowledge I didn't learn in my program. Like, my masters never touched SIEM tools or python. We barely touched on Linux for cyber incident handling. Overall, this certification is excellent in addition to other certificates/work experience.
would you say that getting this cert was enough to pass the sec+ exam?
@@thatoneguywithtwothumbs@ tylermcdonald9102 I'm still working on the cert, but it has taught me some valuable skills and knowledge that I wouldn't have learned. This cert and a Security + study guide/ videos should be enough to pass.
I’m doing a MS ENg in Cybersecurity policy and compliance at GWU and I too am taking the sec+ in Dec, should i reschedule and take it later and do the google course?
@jhayda_tech_fitness you don't have to reschedule tbh to do the Google Cybersecurity Certificate. Imo I think it gave me a good foundation of cyber security. After I finished the Google Cybersecurity cert, I spent 8 days studying and taking practice exams before I passed the CompTIA Security + exam.
Thank you! I'm concerned about the time required to complete the certification, as I'm scheduled to sit for the Sec+ exam in December. This leaves me with only three months to finish the certification while also keeping up with my classes. Do you have any advice? @@ajramirez77
As an accounting student, going through the courses in this program has been relatively easy to me so I'd say it's definitely beginner level. In just three weeks I'm already at course 4 (out of 8). Granted, this program and a bunch of other Coursera courses have taken over my life for the past few weeks hahaha (in the best ways possible ofc). Highly recommended!
So is it good or worth it?
Do you have prior experience in accounting or a degree in accounting? What career/job path are you pursuing? I’m also in the field of Accounting.
Kind of same here, studied and currently working in finance. Now thinking to start this course for a shift in career. Anyone with this sort of experience? What would you say?
Great. I am also a account student and doing this certification. Glad to see you. Hope you engage more in discussion forum.
Just 3 days into the program I am almost done with first course, the system says am 19 days ahead of schedule, If I continue that way, I should be done in 2 months or 3 Max.

I wanted to inform you that I completed this specific course within a span of two weeks. Despite my existing expertise in the field of cyber security, I must admit that the course itself is quite impressive. It would be interesting to observe if they develop a more advanced version in the future.
kindly what would be your suggestion for further studies to someone who just completed this course and had no prior knowledge or experience in this field?
@@Dept.OfInternationalOrganisati To ensure practical application of cybersecurity skills, I recommend engaging in small projects that incorporate the use of everyday security tools. Practicing with tools you've learned during your course will help reinforce your knowledge. However, it's crucial to note that soft skills play a paramount role. Without strong interpersonal and communication abilities, the technical skills alone may not suffice. Thus, focusing on developing and honing soft skills is equally, if not more, important for a successful cybersecurity career. Neglecting the importance of soft skills could hinder your progress in the field.

Currently on Week 4 of the Google Cybersecurity Cert Program and it's been great. I am looking to do a career change and wanted to see if this would be for me. The content is really educational and information is easy to absorb. Because it is self paced, you can go as quickly or as slow as you want which is great for those who work and/or have other priorities. Worth it so far! Looking forward to where this will take me. :)
Is the course for free
update ?
Hey Shane, thank you for these videos, awesome content man. God Bless : )
Glad you like them! God bless!
I was able to complete the course within the 1 week free trial by doing it full time/non-stop for a week straight. I did have some previous python and linux experience though. I don't work in the field but am considering it and felt that doing the course was a good use of my time. EDIT: I just wanted to add that I ended up studying for Sec+ for a month. I just took the exam and I passed! Although the Sec+ studying took a lot longer than the Google Certificate and goes much more in depth, I have to say I'm so glad to have done the Google Cert because it was a great way to learn the fundamentals.
How many hours a day?
@@hotglasschick he'd have to do 12 hours a day at least. Some of the information is filler for the sake of introducing you to the field, however if you're a beginner and don't know anything about the work, there's no way you'll complete it in the free trial week. He stated he already knew some python and linux, so it was easier for him to fly through the material.
@@halowaffles Yes, for the python section I have to say it was easy at the beginning but very difficult toward the end for me. And yes, I did put in about 8 hours a day at the beginning but about 12 hours/day toward the end.

That's awesome. Thanks for the kind words.
I just finished up this Certificate, and I'd say it's pretty good for base knowledge! Learning things like general commands in the Kali Linux CLI, for Python and for SQL it's definitely a great starting point. And, if you already have a pretty good knowledge base in IT or something related to Networks it won't take long! I finished this Certificate in just over a month!

Hey I’ve decided to add this specific certificate to add to my portfolio along with my other ones. It’s been a year or so since I’ve got to learning and figured this would be a nice way to brush up on my skills. This course is actually not bad lol. Im actually surprised at the level of delivery and information they teach you. I’m one week in and I’ve been completing a course a day. But I only did 3 days so far out of the week. For those whom are skeptics about it. For beginners, it’s a great start for an introduction to the basic fundamentals of a wide range of topics in cybersecurity. Plus having a Google cert on your portfolio and/or resume is a bonus. But do explore other certs after. I do have 4 other certs. GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!
I just finished course 4. Ive been completing one course a day.
Edit: just completed course 5, wasnt as bad as course 4 in terms of amount of labs.
For every lab, there is one required and one optional. I have been doing the required ones and not the optional
Edit 2: just completed course 6, wasnt too bad honestly. Probably would’ve taken longer but i am focusing on concept comprehension rather than application. Knowledge application can come once I have the certification so I can avoid paying $50. My plan is to wake up tomorrow and finish course 7&8 in one day. Will update.
Course 1: 3 hours
Course 2: 3 hours
Course 3: 4-5 hours
Course 4: 8 hours
Course 5: 4-5 hours
Course 6: 3-4 hours
Course 7: 2.5 hours (this is the python course, i personally do not like the this section, as the labs do not show you the correct answer alot of the time. In python, sometimes you will output an answer instead of an error, making you believe its the right code. But if you never see what the code is supposed to look like then you wont know if you did it correct. I preferred the reading in this section over the labs, but thats just my personal opinion. This is coming from someone who had somewhat of some python experience in the past. This course could've taken me alot longer, but I ended up just using the reading to complete the weekly quizzes.)
Course 8: 1 hour
Will update as i finish. I have prior SQL experience and slight prior linux experience. Havent reached the python part yet. My goal is to finish 1 course everyday so i should be done in 4 days. I already work from home so i have infinite time to finish it.
Hopefully i can get a job with the certification alone.
Final Update: The certification took me 6 days to complete. Ended up avoiding the $50 fee. Pretty good course overall. Goes over alot of things, and gives hands-on practice.
Wow! You're on 🔥🔥🔥 Good luck and keep us posted!

Currently doing to the course and starting module 5 out of 8. I am looking for a career switch from sales to cybersecurity and have little to no knowledge of cybersecurity. It’s been a really good course with lots of helpful labs, quizzes and reading.
Really enjoying it right now!
Something to be aware of, the average salaries you see posted on these websites depend Highly on what 3rd party marketing company the company you're looking at uses. A lot of companies use these 3rd party companies to give them estimate ranges on salaries based on the position and region to determine what your starting salary could be. Most companies can potentially use the low side of a salary range to start you out at. So something to keep in consideration when shopping around. Don't look at median salary, take the whole range into consideration.
Great advice thank you
Just wanted to say thanks for your honesty and very detailed review. So helpful. Your putting me on the right track !! Your review was thorough enough for me to feel confident to sign up for program!

You make some pretty good points, I am taking the Google Cybersecurity certificate and they are pretty easy, this is my 3 day and I am already on the fourth week ahead. As you said is so much for the money, I like it and I think is worth it. I am planning to take all of them because they are cheap and you get to learn so much. 1) Use some notepads tools like notion to keep all info
2) Don't focus to learn and remember each detail, it will be better to note it
3) You need know core principals like mostly used security tools, and e.g. what the difference among WAF, firewall and IDS
4) You will not remember all the things once you will start to use them on everyday basis
5) cmon guys, PCI dss standard has 250 pages, I will never remember it one I started use it. When you have 10 messages per day from your client what the requirement is, and you will ten times answer them - good job, now you really learned some stuff.

Guys, The American Dream Academy is partnering with Coursera and it's closing July 1st and you can get these certs for free through it. It's an absolute steal! Great to get the ball rolling, but reality says this cert means fuck all in job hunting, it is a great addition to the resume if anything albeit, sec +, and a bachelors will get you what you want in a reasonable amount of time. It's doable without a direct BS in the subject, but will take longer to accomplish by trade per se.
Im currently nearly finished after 4 days of spending average 5 hours per day on it. Currently on the 7th module, so on a good role. I would say I have some experience within IT as I have previously studied CCNA (albeit 16 years ago) plus have a BSc in computing (over 20 years ago). I have not really done anything within IT including programming for maybe...14 years, so as I'm getting older its time to find a career in something less physically demanding. I believe if you are very new to IT, this is not a good course for you as you will not really understand it properly, so a little background in systems, networking and some idea of programming will help a lot !
It’s a great entry point for people new to IT.
thank you so much :)

Is there a way to book a coaching session with you Shane? I’m graduating with my cyber security degree from WGU soon and would love to learn how to apply for jobs, create a resume, optimize my LinkedIn. I know there are free resources for this but I’d love a personal guide! Also want to support Shane for all the help these past few years!!
I'm actually running a cohort right now doing exactly this, but we're already a few weeks in. I think I'll do it again here in the next 4-5 weeks or so.
I have no University degree and looking for a career in cyber security would you advise me to pursue this course given that am just from a manual security job?
I've just completed this course! It took me just under 3 months to finish. I was pretty new to all the tech side of things so it did take awhile to pick some of the things up. I've learnt a great deal with this course to advance my IT knowledge so that I can get a new job, hopefully as an IT entry Helpdesk role. If you're new to IT you won't be able to finish this in a few days as you really do need to learn all the information givin in the courses from the top of your head if asked in an interview as it's essential IT knowledge for any IT role. In interviews they can ask you anything and you will need to give a description of why you have done that troubleshooting method ect. You will also need to describe what any abbreviations mean and do for example, DNS, DHCP, 2FA ect and give descriptions of these and how to solve any issues relating to them. I definitely think this is a fantasic course for anyone wanting to get in to IT.
Glad to hear!

I'm on the cusp of 30 and just now trying to break into the IT world. Went and received my Associates in Security-based IT, and now trying to save up for certs. It seems CompTIA seems the most popular, and looking into these Google Certs as well. I've also heard of GIAC and ISC^2 certs too if those are meaningful?
Honestly, I'd be looking moreso for a mentor in the field...
I just turned 30 on the 22nd. I broke my leg two days after my birthday. I have no excuse but to get the google certification while I have nothing else to do!
Hi, I had a question. I am new to the IT world and I want to pursue a career in cybersecurity. I'll be starting my bachelors in cybersecurity in about 6 months. Do you think I should go for this course or take up some other course ?
Though I'm not a "beginner" i have plenty of IT experience... I'm here sitting at 1 week and a half at most. With 3 chapters done. And im sure today i finish chapter 4 so make it; 1 week in a half for HALF of the certificate, for someone experienced in IT at various capacities.
If you wanted a benchmark for the more experienced folks.
For beginners... like no experience whatsoever... it'll take googling some stuff and taking good notes, investing a good couple of hours a day for sure. In order to progresss through some of the weeks as it gets in other topics you might be absolutely clueless about.
Procrastination and/or cheating are weaknesses in this certiticate. You'll see where. You'll have to keep ethics on point and actually know your stuff. Not just get the paper that says you do. Dont ruin it for other people. Give it the respect.
Enough for a job? Eh idk it depends. Enough for a "hey I know what I'm talking about"... I'd say mkay I'm listening. Cause yeah you do got the foundations with this course if you do apply yourself. Previous experience in IT helps a lot though.
In the process of getting my sec+, I’ll let you and everyone know if I get anything! My path has been difficult so we shall see!
You can do it Deema! Stick to it and bite your way through! 👊🏻😎

Just wanted to know regarding Coursera, I've noticed that Coursera is offering online bachelors degree programs from different universities around the world.
I'm doing my research on one of them (university of London), and they seem legit, but I also need some sort of reassurance from someone else, will it be possible for you to make a video on this topic?
Would appreciate it if you could go over is it worth it and is it legit thanks
How much might the course cost for people outside of Canada and America?
You mention that the course helps optimize your portfolio, especially someone who doesn't have a ton of experience in the field. I'm just curious what you mean by that? I'm someone who doesn't have experience in the field and am considering this course.
My only concern would be that with ai picking up steam quickly these types of jobs would be the first to go

If you are wanting to make a career change into cybersecurity, would you recommend a BootCamp or the google certs?
I'm a college dropout, i did a 1 year course on hardware and networking I'm really interested in this cert program can you suggest to me what I should go for after this, i have to land a job and can't rely on being an exception.
Yo what is the RESUME type that helps you go through the automated portion of looking at resumes... you said it in a previous video, it was like an ATF template resume or something like that
Bro, this video saved me soo much of my time on deciding between the degree or the certificate. Thank you
Happy to help!
Hi shane great video , i was kinda curious im thinking about doing the cyber security certificate, i have no experience in coding language or python. I want to know if i should go for IT support or data or cybersecuity course which one should i go for ......i currently work in the media
The great thing is you can start either of them without much risk. Just start them and see what you like. Either one is fine, if I had to choose I'd go with the IT one to start as it's easier to land a job.
Dang that Pokemon theme gave me shivers in the back of my brain
I completed the Cert within the free trial time, but I have a SEC + cert already and had a lot of free time haha.
Do you think it would be wise to do the IT certificate before doing the cyber security certificate?
I'm close to completing my bachelor in Aircraft Engineering and I heard that the mixture of CyberSecurity and the aviation field is pretty good. Is this course suitable for me?

I am finishing up course 7 and struggling with Python. Should I take extra classes maybe even a college course for it? I am worried not grasping it enough will be a problem when I try to get jobs
I never understood how these certificates work.
After I finish all the courses do I have to take and pay for a test ?
Do I get a paper or somekind of badge that shows I did it ?
