It’s going to be 6 or 7 days before I can watch this, but that means I get to anticipate it for that long! Two solid hours of Prehistory Guys, *plus* James Dilley - that’s something to look forward to, for sure 🎉
The great value of being a generalist is seeing the broad picture, and making connections across the silos that the specialists get so deep into. That's a big reason why I enjoy your videos so much, I like seeing a broad picture.
Hello from Oregon, USA. I have been watching you on a different account for a while & as an Archaelogical Historian, I love your work! So great to watch people question what we've been told for generations. Just for you.....Megalithic found in Montana, Utube, Wandering Soul. Very interesting & I may go there next year.
That was hugely enjoyable. It's a pity the chat isn't available on the recordings anymore - any chance of getting it back? I think it might also draw in some new participants… as someone said, very few chat shows are as civilised, friendly and informative as yours!
*_"It's a pity the chat isn't available on the recordings anymore"_* I can see the Live side chat. It takes a few hours to render when the live stream becomes a video, but if you were watching live it should be there. I missed the live by 6 hours or so, but the Live Chat is there now. Unless they turned it off when it started proper. I am at "Begins in 7 minutes" at the moment. {:o:O:}
I'm doing my best Sibylle. Crossed fingers the chat will be preserved. Don't want to get too techy but I think the chat was lost previously because I did the edit before RUclips had processed the video after recording stopped. Hopefully I've avoided that by waiting a few hours and all the likes, comments etc. will be preserved. M.
WHOOPS - so sorry, everyone - especially Michael - I was being a bit hasty, and also having connection problems, I think. Rural Autria with a lot of snow, this can happen. My sincere apologies. Please watch the chat.
@@ThePrehistoryGuys so sorry, Michael - I really don't want to give you more stress with tech stuff than you already have! My mind boggles at your workload, as far as I can even imagine it. You're doing a fantastic job!
@@nilcarborundum7001 Absolutely no problem Sibylle! No need to apologise. It's been very informative to hear from you and others on the topic. In the end, I'm keeping the pre-show countdown and as of now, the chat remains intact. The issue from our point of view is that the algorithm takes close notice of viewers behaviour during the first minute of each show. Audience retention in the first few seconds is critical to the overall success of the video. You're doing well if 70% are still viewing at the 30 second mark - anything much less than that and the performance is going to be pretty ordinary. I think what we'll be doing in the future is retain the countdown, but in the first few moments, formalise an introduction that'll hold the attention of folk watching the recording so their more likely to stick with it or skip to the 10 minute mark instead of going off elsewhere. Make sense? Thanks Sibyllle! M😊

01:26:32 I can see the Live Chat, and I was quite happy to see the preshow, even though I missed the Live by 6 hours. So the answer is *DON'T EDIT OUT THE PRESHOW,* then everyone can see the Live Chat for evermore. *NO* one likes the Live Chat vanishing, *EVERY* one can click on the time tracking bar to go to 00:09:45 and skip the preshow if they want to. It's not rocket science! I could do it with an obsidian awl! {:o:O:}
@@ThePrehistoryGuys As far as I am aware, any editing of the video uncouples the live chat, as the live chat is contemporaneous with the live stream broadcast. So it cannot have, say, 150 minutes of live chat with a 141 minute video, as a chunk will be missing and they cannot synchronise. Every other channel I am subbed to loses the chat if they edit the video, so most don't edit their videos any more, unless they have to for copyright, inadvertent doxing and so on. But I also notice that RUclips has added a LIVE section, as well as VIDEOS and SHORTS to each channel's home page. Maybe if you edit the videos as a VIDEO upload, the LIVE will remain? But perhaps the best option might be to leave it as it is, and then make a pinned comment including a time stamp for "Preshow ends and live show begins"? It's really not particularly onerous for end users to skip the Preshow part, for those who don't want it. Maybe you're over-thinking it a little? {:o:O:} _(Edited for tyops)_
@@ansfridaeyowulfsdottir8095 You're right Ansfrida - the chat always disappears if the video is edited. I thought it was only in the case of saving the recording to a new video. The advice from RUclips trainers out there though is surprisingly strongly in favour of eliminating the countdown for the recorded version. The issue is that the RUclips algorithm pays a lot of attention to viewers behaviour during the first 30 seconds. If they skip to later in the video or away entirely, it has a huge effect on whether RUclips serves that video to a wider audience. For monetised videos, this a critical consideration. Thanks for your input. I think the trick will be in future to make the first 30 seconds of the pre-show countdown as engaging as possible and then invite viewers of the recorded version to skip 10 minutes. P.S. although I have edited the video just now, it is possible to undo the edit and restore the chat. I might do that.
@@ThePrehistoryGuys *_"RUclips algorithm pays a lot of attention to viewers behaviour during the first 30 seconds"_* Yes, I have heard of that. I also thought it applied to later on in the video and if you skipped part of it, it didn't count as a full watch. But I don't make any content, I just watch it/listen to it. Well, it's your channel so you must do as you see fit, of course. A lot of people do like to see the live chat, even after the live show. I suppose you could just not do a 10 minute Preshow, just go live when you're ready? Most channels I am subbed to always have at least a few minutes before the actual live. Some of them play ludicrously loud "house" and "hip hop" music, 145 times louder than it needs to be and 600 times louder than the conversation! I always skip past that! But if your live shows are saved under LIVE and your edited videos saved under VIDEOS, perhaps we can get the best of both worlds? Great video, by the way! {:o:O:}

I cut crosshatch into the back of wood to be glued together. Not all the time, but if its something I'm keeping then definitely. Not sure why, I've tested my glue (titebond 3) and the wood will splinter apart before it lets go. I wouldn't think you'd need it on a shaft, if you melt pitch and pour it in something you'll bout' never get it back out. I could be for winter use, when it would shatter but pitch is seldom used alone, there's usually fat or wax or ocher with some softer gums and resins. Bitumen if you're by a seep.
I take your point about glue, but I believe James Dilley is right that if the stone fits really snugly into the wood, nothing else will be needed. In fact, glue or fixings could inhibit the natural, self-adapting "pressure-based fit" (for lack of a better technical term) between the stone and the wood. If they were not glued together, you might have a much better chance of the whole thing adapting itself to atmospheric humidity, etc. during use? - it might come loose when not used for a while, but after a couple of strikes it'll be just right again? Would that make sense to you? - I guess I'm thinking that a joint between wood and stone is a different thing for a static object, and for one that is in constant use and movement, with force being applied.
