    I used to have the mindset that when a player hits 32-34, move on from them. I thought this especially about Sexton and O'Mahoney. I was wrong. Unless there is someone better than them, and as long as they are performing to their usual standards, then age is just a number. Sometimes, a 35 year old like Eben is the better option than a 25 year old who will never be at that level.
    Some countries will have cycles of good/average players, like Wales is having. South Africa has a conveyor belt of talent, and even at schoolboy level, it is fierce competition to even make it to a pro club, so they look set for the long term. Yes, some players like Kolbe are extra special, but Arendse is no slouch! Honestly, it went from "Who will replace Habana, to who will replace Mapimpi, to who will replace Kolbe, etc". They always have someone, and now that the politics seem to have died down a lot, and players are picked on merit, everyone who comes through is a top player. They genuinely look set to dominate for years to come.

      just to clarify, Eben has only just turned 33 (those 2 years makes a big difference for the next WC 😅), but your point is absolutely spot on. Sometimes you have a special talent coming through that you just have to give some experience to...but unless they're knocking on that door, the stalwarts should still be trusted to do the job

    The interesting one is the emergence of Fassi. What he did was actually to extend Willie's career (and maybe end it). Willie was having some serious concussion issues and with Willemse still injured, posed an issue for Rassie. Fassi got the chance and has made 15 his own for now. By doing that, you can protect Willie (whose contribution in the team is still phenomenal as one of the best readers of the game) by giving him limited time on the field, yet keep him in the group. With his concussion risk, it is perfect and thus extending his career, BUT if Willemse returns to full form, it will become a Fassi/Willemse fight for the 15 jumper and no longer a Fassi/Le Roux fight, by implication ending Willie's test career. I am sure Rassie will still guide him through to 100 test caps, but after that, I am afraid is it going to be very difficult to find a actual rugby-merit spot for him. Rassie may keep him around, like a Schalk Brits in the past, just to let players learn from Willie vision and experience.

    • @TwoCentsRugby
      @TwoCentsRugby  5 дней назад +7

      That's an interesting bit of context mate! I didn't even mention Willemse with his long lay off. It'd be cracking to see Willie make 100 caps

    Enjoyed the chat thanks mate. 1. Ox/Steen/Tank 2: Bong/MMX 3: Mal/Wilco Sub Vinny/Tank. Eben and PSD need to come off the bench more, with RG filling in for Eben. PSD esp. needs bomb s. promo for BJD. Loosies Boks have too many to choose from. I do expect Rassie to want Eden Park and will send out the boys for the big occasion, we rugga purists fondly remember the card on Bismark/Carter costing Boks any chance on that occasion. At full-back there is a big change Fassi is close to what is required but needs to work on his kicking for exits and pressure if he gets that's right he will be lethal and hard to drop.

  • @randomlyfactual1943
    @randomlyfactual1943 5 дней назад +6

    The most important one is at tighthead. Malherbe and Koch and the third option Nyakane are absolute legends and a lot of the Boks domination has been on their massive shoulders.
    But Malherbe is 32, Koch is 34 and Nyakane is 35. This makes Malherbe hopeful for 2027, Koch doubtful and Nyakane almost certainly ruled out.
    I would go with Louw and Du Toit as rotating starters and then the mighty Malherbe and Koch to come off the bench. This should see Malherbe through to 2027 and will make Koch a lot more hopeful for the World Cup.
    Another position to look at, is outside centre - Kriel is the man, but Inthink now that Am is fit, he'll take a chunk of the game time.

    Given all the camps that Rassie has, I think he has a plan to transition the squad before 2025 but the older guys are playing at their peak currently and that can only help set the level for guys coming in.
    The negative would be if he was not giving guys a chance, most of the players that got the chance to represent their nation got that chance against good opposition.
    We're seeing guys taking over certain positions or showing they can handle it at this level, the likes of Louw, Fassie, Nortje, Sacha and the guys waiting on the sidelines with something to prove like Hanekom, Hooker(camp), Grobler, Van den Berg, BJ Dickson etc.. I would see it as a positive that they have top quality waiting to get the chance and for some reason it seems with Rassie it's always at the right time, no desperation caps.

    • @TwoCentsRugby
      @TwoCentsRugby  5 дней назад

      Yeah there's definitely a process between getting guys in camp to become part of the squad, getting time from the bench, becoming a starter. It can only be good to have the young fellas learning from the veterans. Hopefully we see the youngsters start to push through in the next year or two

    Whereas I understand the necessity of blooding new players etcetera, I do have a problem with the Boks mixing up squads so much. The Boks always look unsettled because of that and I honestly do not believe it's in the best interest of the squad. In the end (in the World Cup final for instance) you can ONLY play 23 players, regardless of your depth. Those 23 players should be played together consistently for at least the Boks' four last tests before a RWC final (should it happen again) in order to solidify their "unity". Changes should only be made in the event of injury, or one, perhaps two at a time per match to rest players in the top 23. It's one thing to have massive depth, but something else to have a solid, settled 23. Great video as always Mark! Cheers from Safferland! 🇿🇦

  • @mrRoetser
    @mrRoetser 4 дня назад

    Great analysis - Rassie said that he wanted to give the '23 world cup winners a chance to play for the Boks in '24, especially in SA in front of the home fans. No rugby was played post the '19 world cup in 2020, and very little in 2021 which contributed massively to this. He still managed to blood quite a few youngsters this year. Expect more changes to come through from next year with a firm eye on '27

    • @TwoCentsRugby
      @TwoCentsRugby  4 дня назад +1

      Yeah man I think rather than chuck all the youngsters in the deep end, it's about getting them in the squad, around the veterans, and then slowing building up how much time they're given

      @ so much of it is about getting it right, when to add new players and how much time to give and how many newbies at once. It’s a massive part of it and Rassie seems to have a good method. NZ I think has had issues at several positions with that. I think you mentioned it too, that they don’t have a supportive fan base that allows losses while you’re creating that balance and adding new guys.

    • @TwoCentsRugby
      @TwoCentsRugby  5 дней назад +3

Whereas they were much more careful about McCaws minutes and blooding a replacement slowly over his last 4 years… to the extent they couldn’t accept that player wasn’t the best 7 but that’s another story 😂

If that test was being played on Saturday and injuries/form were not an issue I would have a 23 consisting of Ox,Bongi,Frans,Eben,Lood,Siya,PsdT,Wiese,Faf,Pollard,Arendse,DDA,Kriel,Kolbe,Le Roux with a bench of Kitshoff,Marx,Koch,Mostert,Snyman,Kwagga,Williams and Damian Willemse. @duggey9150 5 дней назад

    I think the one aspect of the age in the forwards will probably not hamper South Africa as much as other sides due to the ability to run a 7-1 bench or 6-2 bench. Bit easier for the older guys to play 45 mins and then get replaced. I do wonder if next year will see a lot more even splits with younger guys filling in slots in the forwards than we did this year. The center position will be interesting as there are a few class players in the wings waiting to play.

I'm curious If there was any rule change to subs because the tournament might be longer with more teams in the next world cup. Or at least team sizes you can take to the world cup. S.A Is definitely making sure we have more kickers for the next world cup anyone can see that.

      @GBH001 . I know it's a terrifying thought that the Boks could get even better upfront . Maybe you should just hug your teddy 🧸 bear. In the last World Cup Deon Fourie played in the World Cup Final in the front row at the age of 37 and delivered close to a man of the match performance. Os du Randt was 36 when the Boks won the WC in 2007. No better loose head prop in the history of the game. Frans Malherbe will be at his destructive best come the next world cup. South Africans are built different buddy.

    With the new world cup format I think teams can get away with an older squad. If you are ranked in the top three and with six pools your chances of getting a top team in the pool stage is very slim. Even your first playoff game will most likely not be against a top team. You will basically have three maybe two very hard games right at the end.
    I know we all complained about the last world cup draw but in a way it was the best draw ever. We saw competitive games in every pool because the teams were at the same level in each group for the most part. We are now going to see massive scores again and the smaller nations will have no chances to win a game.
    Having teams at the same level in groups make the games closer and more exciting dor the fans. It might be unfair to some of the better teams but overall it is a better way to get fans excited.
