      Gears of war is one of the most unique e-sports, especially in the console scene. One of the few console games with exceptional skill expression on controller. This game, as an e-sport, has such an explosive and exciting format and moment to moment gameplay. I think the community needs to be more inviting in the next game and microsoft needs to make the right marketing moves. Even after all that, it'll be an uphill battle.

    Gears is such a wild thing to look back on. That shooter defined a whole era and just as big as its impact seemed like as quick as it disappeared. Gears being such it's own unique beast was a blessing and a curse. There was nothing else like as it ushered in an era of cover shooters, but after there was nothing else like it and where does that energy and hook go. Competitive vs core was also a struggle that other games have but most of them die on the vine and you never hear about it. Competitive and casual/core are really different audiences, Gears was so popular that the difference between the two was apparent.

    • @TrueYankeeFan
      @TrueYankeeFan Год назад +13

      Even as a former hardcore Gears player, I hated competitive tuning. High level team play isn't just about intense Gnasher 1v1s, but things like map control and power weapon domination. Weapons like the Lancer are support weapons, pressuring enemies into having to make decisions about whether to press the attack or retreat. Competitive tuning dumbed down the gameplay into only using the Gnasher to push for one-shot kills because every other weapon was too weak to meaningfully support your teammates. Even Gnasher 1v1s were worse for it in my opinion - keeping your distance and playing to down them took 2 or 3 clean shots in every other Gears game, but 5 or 6 in Gears 4 Competitive tuning. So even those were very one dimensional.

      @wabbit2099 Год назад +24

      @@Cagierpaprika68I am just guessing but it would make sense the advantage would be classic latency things.
      Since they are the host, their experience of the game is the “real” version of events.
      When they shoot at you and it connects on their screen, then that counts as a hit 100% of the time.
      When someone who is not the host fires and it connects on their screen, it isn’t guaranteed to be a hit. Instead the info is sent as a packet over the internet where it needs to be checked against the server/host. Your packet might say, “I hit them at this time at this location.” But the server might look at that time and location info and go, “sorry, but player X was not at the exact location.” So, the hit doesn’t register.
      That would be a huge advantage. Your hits might not hit, the hosts always will. Your view of location of other players in the game might be slightly off, but the host always sees what the game will consider “true”.
      Again, I might be off. But I think it makes sense based upon what I understand about latency in online gaming.

    As much as I wasted a lot of after-school hours to Gears multiplayer, it never really felt like a game built for multiplayer. The core concept of it's gameplay, centered around shooting from cover, doesn't transition to multiplayer. The most effective way to play was to rush someone in cover and hope to get in range for the shotgun before they killed you. It was effective, more effective than being the guy firing behind cover - so much so they added the stopping power feature. Gears 1 however turned into a shotty-fest with people seemingly ignoring cover, or using it for maneuverability, dive-rolling all over the place hip-firing. Certainly different from the campaign gameplay experience, it was still fun af and stopping power shouldn't have been implemented for the multiplayer. It took out the key mobility that people used when playing. Features added to strengthen the single-player, or co-op, experience don't need to make it to multiplayer. The players ultimately have a better read on the best way to play multiplayer, and playing behind cover wasn't it. I understand there's a gameplay ideology surrounding Gears, and it's cover system, but allowing players to ignore that for multiplayer wouldn't have hurt the campaign legacy.

    I think the biggest reason and most glaring reason is the fact that the studios making Gears after 3 have all tried to do gears their way. That's why things failed. You need players, then a scene, then pros, but after gears 3 the games were bleh so nobody stuck around so interest in pros was never there.

      That's not fair at all. Anyone familiar with the multiplayer side of the series will tell you that the worst thing to happen to it was Gears of War 2, which is still a mess especially after tu6. Like, you don't even have to listen to me, just watch the video lol. Epic was the one who added stopping power, not TC.
      The scene got revived when The Coalition took over. It wasn't huge like COD but few games are, especially for a game as niche as gears which is an arena-style 3rd person shooter.
      Say what you will about the campaign but you can't take away the effort TC has put into the series.

    Coming from someone of gears 3 esport scene in australia I gotta point out 2 events 1 is that xbox one in general was a huge blow, I remember all of my mates couldn't justify purchasing an xbox one because it sucked compared to ps4 or pc gaming which a lot of us switched to. and secondly judgement I remember ended up fragmenting the community like cs and cs source, but it ended up killing our scene due to the size. Also Gears 4 was so underwhelming that I remember a lot switched to cs or lol. I think gears could make a comeback, but its got to be free to play multiplayer and people gotta step up and go grassroots no big orgs like esl.

    Gears of War's biggest problems are that it has a very high entry bar, and it's very niche.
    3rd person shooter games in general aren't that popular these days, let alone a cover-based MP one like Gears. Tack onto that the fact that it's an arena-style game, which is also a niche style of shooter in today's market, and you see why every Gears game after the "Golden Days" is fighting an uphill battle, no matter how good of a game it is.
    And like I said, the barrier of entry is high. The game isn't just mechanically difficult with a steep learning curve around its systems/weapons - the core flow of multiplayer is vastly different from what you normally experience most other shooter games. Like was said in the video, in Gears, fights involve a lot of timing, distance judgment, maneuvering, and so on. You also generally have to be very aggressive in gameplay style, which isn't common for most shooters. The closest thing I can compare it to is Apex Legends.
    So long story short, most new people who jump into Gears MP don't really understand it and struggle badly, and a lot of them blame the game itself and give it up. We actually saw this when drdisresprct tried to play Gears 5... Which is arguably the easiest Gears multiplayer in the series.
    A small side point is that it's hard to make content for Gears of war.

    ANSWER: The well-known game called "Gears of War" was the Best Game Ever in the genre of "Third-Person Shooter." Unfortunately, the stupid staff at Microsoft decided to rebrand "Gears of War" into a generic word called "Gears." This was done because of the stupid though that, "People call the game 'Gears' online anyways." What Microsoft did was SO STUPID it is the equivalent of changing "Perfect Dark" into "Dark" or changing "Elder Scrolls" into "Elder" or changing "Forza" into "For." You don't see Sony rebranding "Ratchet & Clank" into the generic word of "Ratchet."

    Gears of War 2 was really what killed a lot of competitive scenes. I remember in The Netherlands when Gears 2 was released, almost everyone hated the online multiplayer soo much, that the whole scene that was thriving for 2 years died down within half a year. It was a great game for casual gaming, but for esports it was terrible. The frustration I experienced with those smoke grenades, stopping power on Lancers, wall tagging grenades, inconsistent shotgun and weird maps was something I'll never forget. I also remember the feeling of falling out of love with your favourite game, you wanted to like it soo bad, but it was just very different. What made Gears 1 such a perfect fit for Esports was the simplicity: not too much weapons and symmetric maps without random events, it was such a joy to play that on a high level.

    it sucks cause I was late but it was a year before gears 3 when i started playing. Got gears 2 cause my friends loved the series and were hyped for 3 so i got 2 but ive played every game in the series except tactics.
    Gears to this day couldve been the greatest team shooter. Had the map weapons like halo which added depth and complexity to map control. Also had cool movement techs like wall bouncing. Not perfect but most weapons felt like they had specfic roles with strengths and weaknesses that usually all require a level of skill.
    Teamwork is also very important, anybody who has faced a coordinated higher level gears team knows how much playing as a team decides the winner.
    I would love to see gears come back to the former glory it once was but honestly as an old veteran of the series I dont believe it can reach those old glory days. Dont even get me started on the story/campaign
